The variation in climate, population and vegetation is as great as the variation in altitude. The mountain kingdom of Nepal is double the size of Tasmania, about the size of the UK and slightly smaller than the State of Georgia in the United States. It is bounded by Tibet to the North and India to the East, West and South. It has 8 out of 10 of the world's highest mountains; a land of such giant sentinels as Mount Everest, lhotse, Nuptse, Cho Oyu, Makalu, Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and many more. Physically, it is a four terraced country. The southern region (Terai) is primarily a marshy and malarial jungle and is the habitat of the tiger and the rhinoceros. The 30-40km wide lowland of the Terai runs along Nepal's 800km border with India. The Southeastern part of the terai is also Nepal's granary. North of the Terai are the hills. The first of these are the foothills called Churia Ghati (the Siwaliks) which are of modest height rarely above 1,500m. Kumari , the Virgin Hindu Goddess, for instance, is selected from a Buddhist clan. The Moslems form the third largest religion group with 3.5 percent. The temples and stupas are rich repositories of wood carvings, metal works, terra-cotta and stone culptures.

At Pokhara the temperature ranges from 40 F (4 C) in January to approximately 100 F (38 C) in June, just before the monsoon. In winter, temperatures during the day rise to 70 F (21 C), creating pleasant conditions, with cool nights and warm days.

The country is almost rectangular in shape with its 120 to 240 kilometers width and nearly 900 kilometers length wedged between the two Asian giants of China and India. Within this small area lies one the most diverse topographies and varied plant and animal life to found in the world. This is but to be expected in a country where the land rises from a lowly 67 meters above sea level all the way to the top of Mount Everest at 8,848 meters in a distance of 100 kilometers or so. Geographically, Nepal can be divided into seven regions going east to west. Although these divisions have mainly to do with altitude, they are equally different in the physical terrain as well. All across the south is the Tarai lowlands, an extension of the Indo-Gangetic plain into the political borders of Nepal, touches the hills and mountains further north. These plains, which stretch the length of the country with an average width of around 30 kilometers, is the bread basket of Nepal. Till a few decades back, the Tarai was covered with wide expanses of jungle. These malaria-infested forests served as an effective barrier against any would-be adventurer and helped further in Nepal’s total isolation until the 1950’s. Wide swathes of jungle can still be found all over the Tarai but the work of the axe is evident everywhere. It was to the Tarai that the people migrated as population pressure pushed them out of their limited land holdings in the hills. No wonder that this region is also the geographical zone which has the highest concentration of people in the country.
