Extractions: Project History Teachers College at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders has a history of developing model training programs. The College operates under a Scholar-Practitioner Model which encourages applied cooperative research and development in conjunction with local public schools. In addition to training for a wide variety of special education teachers and speech pathologists, the Department has supported a number of innovative and exemplary projects oriented toward providing assistance to local schools. Project co-directors, Stan Vasa and Al Steckelberg, have a twenty-year history of developing training materials specifically for paraeducators and teachers who work with paraeducators. Extractions: Community Calendar General Information Friend, a community of 1,100 people, is located on Route 6, 12 miles south of I80 in Southeast Nebraska's Saline County. Besides farming and livestock, Friend includes retail sales and manufacturing. A public 9-hole golf course and country club are located on the East side of town. There is also a hospital, long term care facility, K-12 school, and municipal pool. And many church denominations are represented. Welcome to Friend, Nebraska, where there are miles of smiles! History Friendville was founded in 1870 by Mr. Charles E. Friend . In 1869 he left his home in Illinois and in the spring of 1870 he homesteaded the land where Friend is now located. He worked in Lincoln as a store clerk but later in 1870 he took an assortment of dry goods and returned to his hometown where he established and operated a flourishing dry goods store for many years. The Burlington and Missouri River Railroad reached Friend in 1871. The town at that time was no more than the homestead of Charles E. Friend. The government established a post office naming Mr. Friend as its first postmaster. He generously donated land for a school and church.

The attorney must be a well-rounded individual with knowledge in more than law. Understanding the basic psychology of people and the philosophy behind the law as well as using logic, which is necessary to present a case, are important. Cornell Law School's Legal Information Institute web site gives some insight into the coursework taken during law school. Their site also includes the different topics of law arranged by subject. Regardless of the major, pre-law students should be involved in an undergraduate program which is intellectually challenging and requires rigorous academic discipline. Law schools welcome and encourage a variety of educational backgrounds among their students. Breadth and intellectual maturity are more important than a particular subject matter. Law schools do recommend that the pre-law curriculum be carefully selected. A reasonable exposure to such subjects as political science, history, literature, English composition, economics, sociology, and philosophy will provide a good background for the full appreciation of the law. An important skill in law school is writing ability; undergraduate courses that develop this skill should be stressed. Electives such as drama and theater arts, debate, creative writing, and speech can help sharpen those skills needed by a member of the legal profession. Finally, the personal discipline used in the study of science will help prepare the student for the rigors of the law curriculum. Moreover, a basic knowledge of the physical and biological sciences will often help in the cases the lawyer pleads. Many law schools expect the student to have completed at least one accounting course.

Effective date: November 12, 2000. Please note : Rule 21 has been under revision since Fall 2002. The 2nd draft revision was approved by the State Board of Education in February 2003, will go to hearing on March 18, and back to the State Board for final approval in April. The addition of Alternative Certification is part of the Rule 21 revision. Until the revised version of Rule 21 is approved by the State Board of Education, the Attorney General, and the Secretary of State, Rule 21 dated November 12, 2000 is the most current document regulating the issuance of certificates and permits in Nebraska. Rule 22 Title 92, Nebraska Administrative Code, Chapter 22: Regulations Governing the Master Teacher Program. Effective date: January 13, 2002. Rule 22 was passed by the Legislature in 2000; however, no funds were appropriated to the Nebraska Department of Education for Rule 22. As stated in Rule 22, the purpose of the master teacher program was to "build a group of recognized teachers of high achievement in the teaching profession."
