    Extractions: In 1991, Tom and Nancy Osborne initiated the TeamMates mentoring program in Lincoln, Nebraska, with 25 middle school students. This initiative teamed the students with University of Nebraska football players, who met weekly as one-to-one mentors with the middle school students. Of the original 25 students, 23 have stayed with the TeamMates program. 21 of those students have graduated from high school and 19 have continued with post-secondary training. This program included a promise to fund students for post-secondary education if they would: This program also included such benefits as tutoring, funding for summer camps, and other out-of-school experiences which have been proven to help students be successful in school. In 1996, friends of Coach Osborne organized a recognition event for his 200th Nebraska football win. At the celebration, Coach Osborne was presented with a check for $250,000. The Osbornes donated those funds to benefit TeamMates.

The fifth and sixth grade students were located in other school buildings. Five teachers plus the principal, Miss Johannah Chapman, composed the teaching staff. Few houses were located north of Hamilton Street and cows often grazed under the classroom windows. Mules, horses, and chickens also appeared from time to time. Overcrowding led to the need for an addition which was started in 1949, but the new addition still did not include enough room for fifth and sixth graders, so another addition, containing the gymnasium, stage, kitchen, and two classrooms was built immediately upon completion of the first addition. Construction of the two additions was completed in 1953. The playground leveling was finished by 1955. A very active P.T.A. has been a continuous source of support, both financially and educationally, since the first year of Harrison's existence. The first by-laws of the organization provided that a Harrison father should be president, there should be four meetings a year from eight to ten, and that everyone should have gone home by ten o'clock after having had refreshments and a little gossip with his neighbors. In 1945, the by-laws were changed to allow a woman to hold the office of president. Modernization of the by-laws have also included a change in the specified times and frequency of meetings as well as the dropping of the mention of refreshments and gossip!!

France controlled the area along the Mississippi River. The French moved onto the plains via the Mississippi, Arkansas, and Mississippi Rivers to take advantage of the expanding fur trade. The U.S. Secretary of War recommended that a chain of posts be constructed from the Missouri River to the Rocky Mountains to protect the Oregon migration. Col. Stephen Watts Kearny was ordered to construct a new fort and he chose a site on Table Creek, now Nebraska City. It would be named Fort Kearny. The construction of the fort in 1846 at Table Creek, however, was a decision that proved to be a gross error in geographic judgment. The Table Creek site was not on the main route of overland traffic and relatively few emigrants passed nearby. Consequently, the War Department directed that an alternate military station should be established further west near Grand Island where the road to California encountered the Platte River. The second Fort Kearny in 1849. Source - NSHS, RG2102:1-7. In 1847, Lt. Daniel P. Woodbury, an officer in the Corps of Engineers, left Fort Kearny at Table Creek with about 70 men. When he got to the Platte, Woodbury described the site he chose in an official report: "I have located the post opposite a group of wooded islands in the Platte River ... three hundred seventeen miles from Independence, Missouri, one hundred ninety-seven miles from Fort Kearny on the Missouri and three miles from the head of the group of islands called Grand Island."

Grading Procedure Each assignment, test, report, or project will be given a point value. Your grades are determined by the number of points you have based on the total number available.
