The distance option emphasizes course work in entomology and flexibility in non-entomological training specific to individual student needs and interests. The distance M.S. option was developed for students who cannot participate in an on-campus degree program. Intended audiences for this degree are individuals actively involved in entomologically related professions where advanced training in entomology is desirable, as well as those seeking such positions. Examples include agricultural professionals, crop consultants, pest control operators, and high school science and biology teachers. Students enrolled in the distance program will have the opportunity to apply the training they receive in this program to their individual professions. Students transferring to Bellevue University with a Bachelor's degree will have met all General Education Core Curriculum requirements and only need to complete the major. Admissions Office staff will complete an evaluation showing what requirements have been met and what courses the student must complete. General Transfer Policy The Registrar's Office conducts initial evaluations of incoming students' academic records, to ensure all required academic documentation is on file and to apply transfer credit to Bellevue University degree programs in accordance with established policies. Complete reevaluations of these records are conducted only when students change degree programs, majors, and/or when they change university catalogs. A final audit of students' academic records is conducted by the Registrar's Office in conjunction with students' application for graduation. The Registrar's Audit Section ensures all required academic documentation is on file, and all degree requirements are completed prior to issuing a Bellevue University diploma.

Nebraska Educational Telecommunications (NET) is the engine-room of this enterprise, largely financed by the state government and its educational institutions, but with many of its individual projects funded by federal grants. Extractions: by Kenneth Daniel Despite the shrill voices of education officials in Kansas about an education "crisis", the numbers paint a picture of a very healthy institution, both in terms of results achieved and resources allocated. Overall, two areas stand out as being of concern. Kansas is 48th in the nation and worst in its region in terms of administrative costs. And, teachers' salaries are 41st in the nation and only average for the region. These two shortcomings seem to go hand-in-hand. Kansas schools should cut administrative costs drastically and devote those dollars to the classroom, including teachers' salaries. This does not mean that there is not a lot of work to do to make sure the total resources are distributed fairly. The taking over of school finance by the state in the early 1990's destroyed an established school funding system and gutted far more good laws than bad laws. Ten years later, the mess that resulted is far worse than the mess it replaced. There is plenty of money in the system if it is used correctly. From FY1994, the first year the new formula was in full effect, through FY2001, inflation was 20.3% and the increase in total enrollment was 2.2%. To stay even with inflation on a per pupil basis would have required an increase in funding of 20.7%.

The educational programs are adult-oriented, providing individualized and group instruction in academic and life skills/pre-release classes. Educational programming at all institutions (except NCCW) is currently being provided through a single contractual service agreement with Metropolitan Community College. At the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women, Metropolitan Community College provides life-skills programs while Department staff provide other educational programs. Programs are made available to all eligible inmates at a time when the majority can take advantage of the programs and, whenever possible, are designed to allow inmates to enter at any time and to proceed at a self-paced rate. Academic The academic programs include Literacy, Adult Basic Education/General Education Development (ABE/GED) and English as a Second Language (ESL). ABE classes (reading, mathematics, and written and oral communication) are developmental in content and structure. Classes are designed to strengthen skills of inmates who might lack the confidence to enroll in GED preparation courses. Special materials and strategies are used for those inmates who require special remediation in those areas or for whom English is not a first language. The English as a Second Language is offered for any student whose first language is other than English. Instruction is provided in reading, writing and speaking English.

In the 1992-93 school year, Nebraska had 736 public elementary and secondary school districts and systems. Of this total, 729 were governed by a locally-elected school board. The remaining seven were state-operated systems, such as the Nebraska School for the Deaf in Omaha. Altogether, there were 1,385 publicly operated schools. In addition, 19 Educational Service Units (ESUs) provided a range of supplementary programs to public school districts. Nebraska ranks fourth among the states in the number of local school districts, trailing only Texas, California and Illinois. However, the number of districts in Nebraska has dropped dramatically since 1950, when the total exceeded 6,000. As recently as 1982-83, the state had more than 1,000 districts. Unlike other states, Nebraska continues to maintain a relatively large number of elementary-only (Class I) school districts. In 1992-93, there were 433 such districts, of which 412 had operating schools. Most were rural and had small enrollments, and many were significant distances from population centers.
