The principle hydrodnamic facility is a towing tank that is 200 feet long, eight feet wide, and six feet deep. It is equipped with a towing carriage capable of speeds up to approximately 1.8 m/sec (3.5 knots) and a servo-controlled wave generator that can produce either regular or random waves. Instruments are available for measuring fluid forces, pressures, motions, real-time digital images, and other properties of the model being tested. Structural testing machines are available for conducting static bending experiments on intermediate-scale models. Strain gauges and deflection instrumentation installed on the model provide the means of recording the structural response to load systems that approximate the loads imposed by the sea on the full-scale structures.

Extractions: On 7 December 1941, units of the Imperial Japanese fleet attacked United States naval and air installations on the Island of O`ahu. During the battle United States seventh fleet capital ships sustained heavy damage in Pearl Harbor. However, at least one of the smaller bases on O`ahu absorbed proportionately greater losses. The naval air station at Kane`ohe Bay lost thirty-three of its thirty-six total PBY flying patrol boats, several of which were destroyed at their ready moorings in the bay, sinking to the bottom. Historical sources regarding the number of PBYs sunk in the Bay, are contradictory and unreliable. The field course for 2000 focused on submerged naval resources in Kaneohe Bay, O`ahu. The fieldwork featured a side scan sonar and magnetometer remote sensing survey of the mooring area within the naval air station, now known as Marine Corps Base Hawai`i (MCBH) – Kane`ohe Bay. Following the location of significant targets, students made survey dives to assess the condition of the wreck sites. Dive teams recorded information from sites with underwater still photography and measured sketches. Satellite positioning systems were used to track the survey and locate sites on the final map. Following the fieldwork, students created a draft analysis of their findings. The material record of this significant event, lying at the bottom of Kane`ohe Bay, is placed in context of the larger narrative. World War II was one of the most significant contemporary events in the Pacific, and surveys such as this are only the "tip of the iceberg" in understanding the material legacy of that event.
