Extractions: Bibliography This site began as a request from a fourth grade teacher to locate sites where her students could gather information about Native Americans of Oregon. The first problem was attempting to locate over half of the tribal names listed in their social studies text proved to be impossible. Because I have always had an interest in Oregon history anyway, I decided to dig deeper. By checking many web and print resources, I found the number one problem was in finding a correct spelling of many tribal names. Attempts to spell tribal names and their inevitable corruptions by early trappers and explorers result in some tribes having many different names. The tribal names I have used are based primarily on the tribal websites and those from the University of Oregon Linguistics Department. Another problem was solved using the same resources. Maps showing which Indin Nations were located where haver been very difficult to locate. Comparing those maps led me to believe that many had been made by a lot of guesswork, some of it highly innaccurate. I have again relied on the U of O Linguistics Dept. and some archaeology texts for the map I have used. A third problem is that even some texts and maps seem to assume that the reservations currently in Oregon are located in the ancestral homes of the people that live there. This also is untrue. The Paiutes were moved from souteastern Oregon to reservations in other states and then later some were moved to the Warm Springs reservation. Neither was in their homeland. The Nez Perce have no reservation in Oregon. Their primary reservation is in Idaho, not in the Wallowas where the famous Chief Joseph lived.

The information deals with Indians in Kansas, mainly Plains Indians but some information is provided on emmigrant tribes. Thematic units have been developed covering such subjects as food, shelter, clothing and crafts, and spiritualism. Particular focus is given to the buffalo and its importance in Native American culture. The trunk includes many large photographs and visual aids. Because children learn better by experimenting and discovering firsthand, reproduction objects also are included.
