Namibia once locked in the very heart of Gondwana, now lay on the western littoral of Africa. When the fireworks from the throes of continental separation subsided, large volcanoes survived as mountains, like the Brandberg and Spitzkop. From that time and before Namibia has ghost rivers left behind when the ice age glaciers crawled across the land, it has the tracks of dinosaurs embedded in sandstone where they once walked and the coast which originated simultaneously with the Atlantic ocean when primordial forces changed the face of the planet. and Caprivi . Almost half the size of Lebanon, the Etosha Pan is big enough to be classified as a saline desert. Granite mountains stand isolated like steep islands on the plains of the inner Namib, one of them - the Brandberg massif - the highest in Namibia at a height of 2579m. The only perennial rivers are on Namibia's borders. In the north are the Kunene, Kavango, Zambezi and Kwando Rivers. On the southern border is the Orange River. None of the perennial rivers originate in Namibia. Rivers within the country - even the longest, the 600km Fish - are all ephemeral. They flow only after strong rains in their catchments, not necessarily along their entire lengths and not for long. The bigger ones retain water in pools for some months after a flood, but the rest are dry with white sandy bottoms for most of the year

Extractions: Namibia is one of Africa's three most sparsely populated countries, with an average population density of 1.7 people per sq. km. The total population is 1.74 million (1999). About 27 percent of the population lives in urban areas. English is the official language. Afrikaans, Oshiwambo, German, Herero, Nama/Damara, Lozi, Kwangali and Tswana are the national languages. Namibia was under German rule from 1884 until 1915 when South African expeditionary forces defeated the colonial forces. In 1920 South Africa was granted a C class mandate by the League of Nations to administer Namibia. Obligations to promote the welfare of the indigenous people were generally ignored and a legislative assembly for whites was established in 1925. In 1945, the newly formed United Nations (UN) declared South West Africa, as the territory was then called, a trust territory with the right of self-determination. South Africa's refusal to negotiate a trusteeship with the UN resulted in a progressively intensified international campaign to secure Namibian independence in line with UN resolutions. Finally, on 21 March 1990, Namibia became independent.

Extractions: THE finger of land in north-eastern Namibia called the Caprivi strip must be the silliest contrivance of the doodlers who drew the modern map of Africa. The strip pokes Namibia 450 kilometres (280 miles) into the heart of Africa . The Germans, who ruled Namibia, then known as South West Africa, from the late 19th century until 1915, wanted access to the Zambezi, which they thought (wrongly) to be navigable as far as the Indian Ocean. Obligingly, the other European powers carving up Africa gave Germany the corridor it wanted. The lines cut through the Lozi kingdom . Ironically, territory played little part in the complex system of allegiances by which the Lozi kings ruled the upper Zambezi valley for centuries. As in many other African kingdoms, the system was based on people, not land : Lozis were loyal to their king wherever they happened to live. Now split between Angola, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia, the Lozis get a bad deal in all four countries and their desire for unity has grown. The reasons for the current flight into Botswana go back to Namibia's war against South African occupation. Some of the Lozis supported the Namibian nationalist movement, SWAPO; others were against it. The divisions continued after independence in 1990. The Namibian government made no concessions to Lozi separateness and gave the area little development aid: a UN report recently described Caprivi as Namibia's poorest region. A Caprivi Liberation Movement was formed with the ambition of linking up with fellow Lozis in Zambia; the government has been trying to crush it.

Extractions: Biography: I was born in South Africa, and grew up in Swaziland and KwaZulu-Natal. After majoring in Geography and Sociology at the University of Natal, I graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1988 with a Master of City and Regional Planning degree. My career has included work as a land use and development planner and an applied social science researcher in both South Africa and Namibia. I joined the University of Namibia in 1990 as a Researcher, and moved to Canada in 1998 to do my Ph.D. at Queen's. From 198I hold a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship, and have a joint appointment in the Department of Geography and the Southern African Research Centre (www.queensu.ca/sarc/). In addition, I coordinate the international exchanges and work/study placements in Development Studies, and hold an Adjunct position in the School of Environmental Studies.
