5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for undergraduate microbiology
I took a microbiology class in undergraduate and found this book quite thorough and well-organized no nonsense approach. It got right to the point, without the added wording of many textbooks.I also used the Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi which is on amazon.com.
I found the last book to be quite on the mark with the type of questions to know for the test. These two books really helped alleviate many surprise questions on my microbiology exams. My friend who took microbiology last year recommended these two books. He was right, these two books helped me get an A. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars ONE STEP BENEATH EXCELLENCE

4-0 out of 5 stars The only study guide you'll need for microbiology
This book was excellent for my undergraduate microbiology class needed for a nursing program. It was by far the best study guide I found and really helped to summarize the information in an easy to understand manner before I tackled the reading in my textbook. It was also a great review for the exams and had lots of questions to test yourself on your understanding of the material. This book really helped make my study time more efficient and I did get an A in my class. There are some mistakes in the book, which is why I didn't give it 5 stars.I also used Microbiology Study Guide by Dr. Leonardi, which is excellent, but if you can only buy one study guide, this is definitely the book to buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text for teaching Microbiology!
This is my favorite of all my college textbooks, most of which I didn't even keep after the class was over.I purchased it for a 200 level Microbiology course, and read the thing from cover to cover for this class.I referred to it again and again during labs and whenever I felt like I needed more information. It was an EXTREMELY valuable resource, and it was worth every penny I paid for it, and I bought it new! This is one text I really found to be an investment rather than just another college expense. It is totally packed with color illustrations and diagrams; they're on almost every page. The study questions at the end of the chapters are right on target and really help make sure you understand the chapter's focus.I think this would even be good for homeschooling - the topics can be complex, but they are backed up with an excellent glossary and loads of helpful illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Microbiology Lab Manual
This Microbiology lab book was great! It arrived earler than I expected and was in excellent condition.

3-0 out of 5 stars The book was ok,
The book was in ok condition, for a new book i expected it to be plastic wrapped minus the dog ears. I desperately needed this book...so I took it as it was.

4-0 out of 5 stars IT COVERED BOTH TECHNIQUES AND PRECAUTIONS
Apart from hinting that this book is more expensive than I had expected, there is no negative comment I have for it.
It is a well-defined lab manual, which will be useful for both students and investigative scientists. The book covered all aspect of microbiology: including related parasitology topics.
It explained various methods used in the identification and classification of all types of microorganisms. High-level undergraduates should appreciate the directives it gave concerning culture-media preparation, as well as sequential isolation of bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, and microscopic algae. The same applies to its handling of general microscopy: including the advantages and disadvantages of each type of microscope. This is a very fine companion, which discussed every technique and precaution used in contemporary microbiology lab.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book came just as expected.
Book arrived brand new at my apartment still in the plastic wrap. There were no surprises, and I am very pleased. Author is very thorough on the topics presented. Full color pages help for a better understanding.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorley Organized, poorley written
User:medical student, allopathic USA school
Time of use:2 years

This book's presentation of microbiology is disorganized and often hard to follow. Particularly bad is the way each microbe family/viral family is laid out. There is little consistency from bug to bug...headers and sentences like the following are typical:

"Pathogenesis and Immunity:
Only the pathogenesis of rabies virus infection is discussed here"

The 'immunity' discussion is a sentence in a table on a following page...

This book would be an excellent book for an survey course in undergraduate micro. It is completely unacceptable at the professional level and in particular to the medical student, where it is important to absorb a great quantity of information in a little time.At my school I hear the professors constantly say "it is poor, but it is better than the alternative."

One would be better served to invest in Cecil's text of medicine.Though dense, at least the writing is such that one can skim quickly and learn the high points of each bug.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This is a very good book for medicine students. I'm in the second year and has been very usefull. But this book dont justify changing your 5 edition on it. Almost all the chapters are equal, with just some boxes with clinical cases, and there is no answers to the questions of the end of the chapters, although the answers are clearly in the text, the old one, or at least the one that i saw in the library, had all the answers whith some complement to the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must buy for USLME
This book is good for the USLME microbiology portion. It gives essential detail of high-yield items. However, I also used:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
(ISBN: 0971999635)
The second book I got on Amazon.com also.I recommend the first book as a great summary to getting to the essential details of microbiology.I advise getting the second book to help prepare for the type of questions to know for the USLME.

4-0 out of 5 stars Complete Medical Microbiology Review Book..
'Medical Microbiology and Immunology: Examination and Board review' is more than a good book. The organization and contents of the book are great. Summaries of the most important microorganisms at the end of each section of the book make it excellent for quick reviewing what one has just read. Also, the book includes unique chapters like normal flora, laboratory diagnosis, and vaccines which are really helpful. The immunology section extensively provide a solit understanding of the immune mechanisms, using illustrative figures and mnemonics. Moreover, the MCQs at the end of the book, along with the clinical cases, emphasize on the important areas in medical microbiology.

One more thing I have to complement is the use of bold font in the book; this made skimming chapters quickly before a final microbiology exam a 'stressless' event, and gave confidence.

To be neutral in my review, the book lacks a good mycology section (You need another book for mycology).

5-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to Diagnostic Microbiology
Excellent text good for reviewing medical microbiology.

My order from nettextstore never arrived.

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good study book
I found this book really helpful but I am not sure how up to date it is.. also kind of strange that the pictures in the chapters are in black/white but then have color copies in a photo section in the middle

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product and over the top customer service
This vendor highly recommended, especially for students in the Southeast. I am a Georgian, and they are close by in North Carolina. These people went out of their way to expedite delivery. The microbiology text book they advertised as "Used, like new." I thought I'd made a mistake purchasing a used book, but when it arrived (just in time for classes), there was no writing in the worksheet sections.

The price was very reasonable. I have recommended this vendor to my fellow students in the med lab program at North GA Tech.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Medical Laboratory Technologists
I am a Medical Technologist who is retraining in the microbiology lab. This book has been a lifesaver for me.It's a concise and practical review.Just the right amount of information. It's fairly easy to read and includes many practical lab procedures as well as theory.
Also the information is up-to-date.I highly recommend this book to hospital/medical lab people.

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally a micro text that makes sense
This text puts all the information from the each chapter into concise, easy to follow flow charts and tables. At the end of each chapter are study questions, standard lab procedures, and descriptions of media used in the micro lab, what is in the media, and why it is in it.The specimen flow charts were very heplful. For each common specimens received in the lab, the flow chart will tell you step by step what to do to ID the organism based on Gram stain, biochemical reactions, colony morphology, etc.It was nice to have all that info in one place instead of having to turn back and forth through several chapters.Wonderful text for anyone starting out working in a micro lab. ...
