Product Description
Now available in paperback, this informal account of the people, culture, land, and history of Sonora, Mexico, describes blistering deserts, alpine mountains, tropical river valleys, and arid coastlines, and relates the lives and stories of cattlemen, lumbermen, fishermen, weavers, cobblers, musicians, bootleggers, and Indians. The author's curiosity extends to the weaving of Nácori hats, the distillation of fiery bacanora, and the utility of the tegua, the Sonoran cowboy boot. Sonora is also a record of painful twentieth-century change of human dislocation from rural villages to industrial cities and the relentless destruction of Sonoran forests, jungles, deserts, and rivers. A regular visitor for over thirty years, the author provides a colorful portrait of the Sonora of the past, present, and future. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Read
This is a delightful read, a vivid description of the land, the people, and the culture of Sonora, written by a person who loves it.

A research scientist at the University of Arizona, David Yetman creates a nice balance among history/geography; the human stories of people he meets; and his personal relationship to the land and indigenous people .

The esteem in which Yetman is held, both by Sonoran natives and gringo colleagues, is awesome. He moves easily from intimate conversations with native families willing to share their last tortilla, to sophisticated discussions of politics, agriculture, and drugs with officials in the highest of places. While acknowledging the challenges facing Sonora in light of ecological and social changes, he goes easy when questioning reluctant locals about the drug culture, presumably to avoid putting them, and himself, in harm's way.

Yetman's academic credentials are revealed in the wealth of information about the varied landscapes within Sonora. That he truly enjoys and respects the people he has encountered over thirty years and hundreds of visits shines through and gives the book its personality.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting, from any point of view.
I read this book that I borrowed from a friend 3 years ago.I am a Sonoran native, and I found most of the author's comments accurate.Although I found it a bit pessimistic and cynical at times, I reallyenjoyed his observations on the present conditions in the state, since mostof them are true.

1-0 out of 5 stars I never got the book or a refund
Dont try to buy this as you will never get it or get a refund after you waste time trying to get this seller to respond and send the book. Too bad, I would have much rather had the book than a dispute with Amazon. Cheap.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Mexico History in Maps
My copy of this book is becoming tattered from wear. When I checked Amazon listings I discovered it's now out of print.I'd recommend anyone interested in the history and demographics of New Mexico buy one of these while it's still possible to get it used.

The Contents includes numerous maps under each of the following headings:Natural Environment, Historical Landscapes, Population Characteristics, Economic Characteristics, Cultural Elements and Government.Although the title is several years out of date in some areas, it's still the best document of the kind I've ever seen for the State of New Mexico in a broad-brush quick reference or for an in-depth study of certain aspects of New Mexico history you won't find elsewhere.I'd love to see UNM Press do another run of this one or print it on a book by book POD.It's entirely too good to allow to become unavailable. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars engulfed in the Gulf of Mexico!
An informative book for this age bracket and for older folks as well.
On page 9 I liked the choice of wording (note in caps.) "... becoming the first European to see the gulf of Mexico. Soon, more INVADERS..." !!!
On page 12 various important gulf ports are mentioned and I cannot ever understand why GULFPORT, Mississippi is never included; after all, it has a very important banana venture, DOLE in residence at its port. With regard to the Gulf Stream, page 18 states "... and enters the Gulf through the Yucatan Channel." Yucatan channel is not indicated on a map, how should a novice on the subject matter and a child no-less know where the Yucatan CHANNEL is located?! Ironic that on page 25 shows "a satellite image of a hurricane hitting the Gulf region" and it sure looks like a depiction of Katrina coming ashore and this book is pre-Katrina. There is a photograph of a beach with hundreds of shells, haven't seen that many on a beach in a while!Lastly, I am of the "old school" and not using "and" and "because" as the first word starting a sentence, and this book is "chocked full" of sentences beginning this way -- so if you don't like this "thought", it will be bothersome. Otherwise, the reader could easily become engulfed in informative information this book as to offer. ... Read more

Product Description
There is a widespread perception that sector policies in developing countries are becoming increasingly dependent on the courses set by multilateral and bilateral aid agencies, of which the World Bank is perhaps the most influential one. This book tests this premise by examining the urban agenda promoted by the World Bank in Latin America during the 1990s and how it has influenced urban and housing sector policies in the region. Using Mexico and Argentina as case studies, the book contrasts the economic reform programs implemented in these countries during the past two decades, showing that there have been significant differences in the way they have interpreted the so-called ‘Washington Consensus.’ While Argentina’s reform program was characterized by a strong macroeconomic focus, Mexico adopted a more pragmatic approach, attempting to balance macroeconomic and poverty alleviation objectives. The analysis shows that such differences were also reflected in the housing and urban policies implemented as part of the reform programs, as well as the portfolio of urban development operations financed by the World Bank in each country. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT FOR ELEMENTARY GRADES
My 3rd Grader is studying Mexico this year and I purchased this book to help.I tried other books (Mexico: A True Book (True Books: Countries) which provided more facts but this one was an excellent blend of history and related activities. It contains plenty of interesting facts about Mexico ( boys love the blood curdling Aztec & Mayan sections) but this book shines as a cultural map for young children. It provides several activities including crafts and cooking to introduce them to Mexican culture. All of the activities are easy enough for 3-5 Graders and the directions were okay to follow.I love how this book brings Mexico alive for younger students - they loved making traditional crafts!

I would highly recommend this for teachers, parents and class moms for some great ideas.Kaleidoscope Kids puts out a great line of books covering several cultures.I only wish they expanded this line of books.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book

4-0 out of 5 stars Packed with Informatiaon
I bought this book because I teach Spanish to preschoolers and I'm always looking for more resources. It is best for older children, 1st-5th grades.I got it because I was interested in the information myself and figure the teacher can never be too well informed! It is like an encyclopedia on México.A bit of information on a variety of topics. It leaves me wanting to find out more!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Teachers!
