Excerpt: The Piscataqua River border dispute was a dispute between the US states of Maine and New Hampshire over ownership of Seaveys Island in the Piscataqua River, which forms the border between Maine and New Hampshire. The dispute was settled in 2002 by the US Supreme Court. Seaveys Island lies in the northern side of the Piscataqua River, between the town of Kittery, Maine and the city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The island was originally five separate islands which were conjoined between 1800 and 1866 in order to build a naval shipyard. The State of Maine asserts that the boundary between the states runs along the middle of the river to the south of Seaveys Island, which places the island within Maine. The State of New Hampshire asserts a historical claim to ownership of the river up to the shoreline on the Maine side, which would place the island within New Hampshire. The United States government owns the island, which is the site of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. For many years the US Navy regarded the shipyard as belonging to New Hampshire (whence the name Portsmouth Naval Shipyard after the city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire). Later the Navy adopted a neutral position in the dispute. The political importance of the dispute is based on an income tax imposed on workers at the shipyard, many of whom live in New Hampshire and commute to work in the shipyard in Maine. New Hampshire contends that since the workers live in New Hampshire, paying taxes to Maine amounts to taxation without representation. Maine receives an estimated $46 million per year i...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=15071261 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the Bible for Maine sailing
CGTTMC is only slightly less essential for succesful Maine crusing than charts and tide tables (and beer, of course). In addition to being incredibly comprehensive, it's also beautifully written... so one can still vicariously experience Maine's spectacular coastline when the boat is in the hard.

My one quibble with the book has to do with its indexing. All major (and many minor) subjects are listed, but some of the more obscure ones are not.The book contains a lot of great "color" information in sidebars and boxes; these are generally stumbled upon and, because they're not always indexed, can be hard to find later without flipping through the book.

And flipping through the book is NOT a good idea, because you'll invariably stumble upon something fascinating and start reading whole sections anew...

5-0 out of 5 stars They don't get any better than this!
After sailing tens of thousands of miles in the Americas and Caribbean and using dozens of cruising guides I can honestly say this cruising guide is unsurpassed. It contains detailed information about anchorages, approaches and services available in an easy to use format. With numerous anecdotes and historical stories this book is a pleasure to just sit down and read.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best cruising guides around
One of the best cruising guides around, definitely the best for Maine.Well written, organized and easy to use.Great sketch charts and all of the info that cruisers (not tourists) really need, as well as a good bit oflocal color.

5-0 out of 5 stars you got the authors listed incorrectly
Please note that the authors of this book are Haft and Curtis Rindlaub

5-0 out of 5 stars Only less essential than charts
Whether it's your first trip cruising the Maine Coast or you've sailed here for years, you'll find this your second most valuable resource ( nothing beats a good set of charts [and radar when the fog rolls in])because when you need to decide where you are going to drop the hook forthe night the charts won't be nearly as helpful as the Tafts' years ofexperience.Where to go, where not go, how to approach the anchorage, whatto see ashore are all combined with slices of history and dry wittedanecdotes.A bit of advice to the summer cruiser-- equip your boat withmosquito netting if you want a peaceful evening in one of the mostwonderful places in the world!! ... Excerpt: Peaks Island is the most populous island in Casco Bay, Maine. It is part of the city of Portland and is approximately 5 km (3 mi) from downtown. The island became a popular summer destination in the late 19th century, when it was known as the Coney Island of Maine, home to hotels, cottages, theaters, and amusement parks. Hollywood film director John Ford was known as "The Mayor of Peaks Island" because of his great affinity for the island. He vacationed there from boyhood through the early 1960s, worked as an usher at the Gem Theater and was a deckhand on the Casco Bay Lines ferries in his youth. Ford's relatives still live on the island. Besides the Gem, which featured famous performers including the Barrymore family, two other summer theaters were located on the island. One, the Pavilion, opened in 1887, is said to be the first summer theater in the country. The Greenwood Garden Amusement Park sported the Greenwood Garden Playhouse. George M. Cohan tried his productions out at the island's theaters before taking them to Broadway. Circa 1908, D.W. Griffith was torn between continuing to appear in plays produced at the island's playhouses as he frequently did or heading to Hollywood. Jean Stapleton's first professional appearance in the summer of 1941 was in a production at Greenwood Garden. Martin Landau also made his professional stage debut in a 1951 produ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=561259 ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Alabama : Atlas of Historical County Boundaries
If you're interested in this sort of thing as I am this book could be of great value however the price is unreal. I have a CD that does much the same for the entire country at a third the price of one state however this book is MUCH more accurate and shows county boundaries that only occured for as little as three days. The CD is also easier to use. That said I'll likely ask for the book as one of those Christmas presents I wouldn't buy for myself. ... Read more

From the author: In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, an American urban elite created an extensive North American pleasure periphery, with seasonal resorts that dramatically reshaped local economies and landscapes. Bar Harbor, Maine, exemplified this type of resort. Affluent New Yorkers and Bostonians developed an exclusive, picturesque resort, with a local service economy almost completely dependent on tourism. They also managed to surround the town with a national park.
