Descriptive Information: Mississippi Valley State University is a regional institution responding to the needs of the Delta region of the state of Mississippi for accessible, relevant, and quality undergraduate programs as well as some graduate and public service programs. As a public institution, Mississippi Valley State University receives funds from the Mississippi Legislature and from other sources, including student fees, federal sources, and private gifts and grants. The academic programs of the University offer opportunities for concentrated study in the arts, humanities, sciences, technology and professional fields of business, education, special services, and pre professional health services. Enrichment programs and support services enhance the university experience, help students achieve their personal and professional goals, and promote life-long learning.

Extractions: The history of Mississippi Valley State University parallels the changing demands of society and the expanding needs of the students the University serves. Although legislation authorizing the establishment of the institution was enacted in 1946, the University was not formally opened until 1950. The 1946 statute provided for the establishment of Mississippi Vocational College. The groundbreaking ceremony was held February 19, 1950, with the late Honorable Governor Fielding Wright, the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, the first President of the Institution, Dr. J. H. White, and interested friends participating. In the summer of 1950, the college opened with an enrollment of 305 in-service teachers. The first full academic year, 1950-51, began with 14 regular students and seven faculty members. The college offered the Bachelor of Science degree in 14 areas and provided Extension Services. In 1964, the name of the Institution was changed to Mississippi Valley State College. The College was then authorized to offer the Liberal Arts degree, as well as the Science and the Education degree. Emphasis was placed upon training in pre professional areas, as well as upon technical and specialized areas. The second President, Dr. E. A. Boykins, took office in July 1971.

His syllabus for the Cherokee Nation resulted in the first written language for a Native American people. The Sequoyah Birthplace Museum in Vonore tells his story and is dedicated to the history and culture of Native Americans. The first constitution ever written by white men in America was drafted in 1772 by the Watauga Association at Sycamore Shoals near Elizabethton, Tennessee. Formation of the Watauga Association also marked the first attempt by Americans at complete self-government. The 1772 constitution was based on the Iroquois Federation's laws. Tennessee has produced three U.S. presidents: Andrew Jackson, 1829-37; James K. Polk, 1845-49; and Andrew Johnson, 1865-69. Other famous Tennesseans include frontiersman Davy Crockett, Admiral David Farragut, cavalry officer Nathan Bedford Forrest, U.S. Register of the Treasury James Carroll Napier (appointed 1911 by President William Howard Taft), World War I hero Alvin York, and Cordell Hull (secretary of state under Franklin D.
