We have got together a very strong and coherent program under the historical geography banner for the 2001 conference. I am delighted to say that this includes sessions from the Center for Spatially Integrated Social Science, the Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative, the US National Historical GIS, with many individuals who have also contributed sessions. The final session is a roundtable in which I hope we can draw together ideas on the use of geographical thinking in general and GIS in particular. We have a total of nine sessions who have listed historical geography as their primary network. A provisional timetable for these is given below. Most of the practical details necessary for attending the conference are published by the SSHA I would like to draw your attention to the requirements of the SSHA to pre-register for the conference. The conference venue is the Palmer House Hilton, if you intend to stay here I suggest booking early as it will fill up. There are cheaper places to stay in Chicago. If anyone has any good suggestions please let me know so I can pass them on. Finally, the 2002 conference will be in St. Louis, October 24-27. To get the arrangements for this off to a flying start it would be great if people could bring suggestions about this to the

The glacial history of that continent is of particular interest. Current activities focus more on science policy and the interactions between scientists and politicians as the Antarctic Treaty System continues to develop and evolve. I served as President of The University of Texas at Dallas from May of 1982 until August of 1994, so did not have any students for that period of time. I currently serve on several M.Sc. and Ph.D. Committees.

The Fulbright Visiting Professor for 2004-2005 will be affiliated with the Center for Austrian Studies , an interdisciplinary and interdepartmental research facility for Austrian, Habsburg, and Central European studies established in 1977 as a bicentennial gift of the people and government of Austria to the United States, and the Department of Geography in the College of Liberal Arts This collaboration is based on a memorandum of understanding concluded by the Austrian Fulbright Commission and the College of Liberal Arts in 2001. This visiting professorship was conceived to rotate among departments in the College of Liberal Arts affiliated with the Center of Austrian Studies. The Department of German, Scandinavian, and Dutch hosted the inaugural Fulbright Visiting Professor from Austria at the University of Minnesota, Prof. Hubert Lengauer (University of Klagenfurt) during the fall semester of the 2002-2003 academic year. The Department of Philosophy will host Dr. Gabriele Mras (Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration) under the auspices of this agreement during the spring semester of the 2003-2004 academic year.

It is bordered by Lake Superior and Wisconsin (E), Iowa (S), South Dakota and North Dakota (W), and the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Ontario (N). Except for Alaska, Minnesota is the most northerly of all the states (reaching lat. 49°23'55"N). The climate is humid continental. Winter locks the land in snow; spring is brief and summers are hot. Prehistoric glaciers left marshes, boulder-strewn hills, and rich, gray drift soil stretching from the northern pine wilderness to the broad southern prairies. In the eastern part of the state are mountains from which iron ore is decreasingly extracted. The Vermilion and Cuyuna ranges (discovered in 1884 and 1911) are virtually depleted, and the once rich Mesabi iron range (1890) has seen major decline. South of the iron country, famous for its oldtime raw boom towns, lie rolling hills. In the south and the west are prairies, the fertile farming country of Minnesota. The state has more than 11,000 lakes and numerous streams and rivers. The rivers feed three great river systems: the Red River of the north and its tributaries in the west run north to Hudson Bay; the streams that run east into Lake Superior eventually flow into the St. Lawrence; and the Mississippi flows south from its sluggish beginning in Minnesota in Lake Itasca, gathering volume from the waters of the St. Croix and Minnesota rivers before leaving the state. Two nuclear power plants, at Prairie Island and Monticello, were built in the 1970s.

Extractions: University of Minnesota It may be only natural for an inveterate traveler and tourist to become interested in the study of tourism, though it took me eight years of frequent traveling in various parts of the world to formalize my interest by entering graduate school. There I found, somewhat to my surprise, that scholars in a range of disciplines were discussing the very issues which I had been contemplating as a dilettante for years. While my fascination with the topics discussed in this paper developed over a long period of time, my interest in the specifics of ecotourism development in the Amazon arose during a 1993 trip to Ecuador. There I visited a number of ecotourism projects as a tourist and casual student of ecotourism. Late in that trip I also learned about Capirona's project, though I did not have time to visit it. The following year I began graduate school at the University of Minnesota with the notion of studying Capirona as a "model" of ecotourism development. I was fortunate in that my advisor and many other faculty in the Geography Department supported my desire to do fieldwork in rural Ecuador as a M.A. student, which to stricter minds might appear preposterous. The field research took place over two months in the fall of 1995, almost all of which I spent in Napo Province. After several days in Quito, where I spoke with several ecotourism developers, operators, and observers, I traveled to Tena to meet with Tarquino Tapuy, RINCANCIE's ecotourism coordinator. We met frequently over a period of a week to develop an agreement which would be of mutual interest and benefit. He told me that Capirona was no longer accepting any type of non-tourist visitor; its members had had their fill of journalists, scholars, students, and anyone else who required unusual attention. As an alternative, he suggested Ro Blanco. Though just one year old, its ecotourism project was second only to Capirona in tourist visitation.
