Das Hamster Gehege kann mit Dekorationen und Gängen auf Styropor / Betonbasis versehen werden (" Hamsterbau "), so dass ein plastischer und biotpopähnlicher Eindruck entsteht. Die Hamster haben somit einen Lebensraum zur Verfügung, der ihrem natürlichen schon recht nahe kommt - auf jeden Fall wesentlich näher als den handelsüblichen bunten Plastikkäfigen. Bepflanzt wird das Ganze dann natürlich auch.

Any time we drop or throw something and watch it fall to the ground, we see gravity in action. Although gravity is a universal force, there are times when it is not desirable to conduct scientific research under its full influence. In these cases, scientists perform their experiments in microgravity - a condition in which the effects of gravity are greatly reduced, sometimes described as "weightlessness." Any object in freefall experiences microgravity conditions, which occur when the object falls toward the Earth with an acceleration equal to that due to gravity alone (approximately 9.8 meters per second squared [m/s2], or 1 g at Earth's surface). Brief periods of microgravity can be achieved on Earth by dropping objects from tall structures. Longer periods are created through the use of airplanes, rockets, and spacecraft. The microgravity environment associated with the space shuttle is a result of the spacecraft being in orbit, which is a state of continuous freefall around the Earth.

Gravity pulls them apart. On Earth, gravity usually wins. Only small droplets have enough surface tension per unit mass to remain intact. Onboard the International Space Station (ISS), however, surface tension rules. Weightless water can form big floating drops, large enough to quench your thirst and tough enough to handle using chopsticks. ISS science officer Don Pettit paused for afternoon tea and showed us how it's done: "It's easy," says Pettit. "You just take your chopsticks, pick up a blob of tea, and pop it in your mouth. This is a practical demonstration of all the surface chemistry we learned about in college." Because fluid droplets onboard the space station are undisturbed by their own weight, they make marvelous research tools for investigations in basic fluid physics. Extractions: Before attempting this activity, be sure to conduct the Candle Flames activity. Doing so will sharpen the observation skills of the students. This is important because, in this activity, students will be observing the size, shape, and color of a candle flame as it is falling. Investigating candle flames in microgravity can be done as either a demonstration or an activity. If used as a demonstration, only one candle drop jar is necessary. If used as an activity, one candle drop jar is needed for each student group. Clear plastic food storage jars are available at variety stores, but plastic peanut butter jars will work as well. The jars should be 1 quart or half gallon size (3 pound size if peanut butter jars are used). The oxygen supply in smaller jars runs out too quickly for proper observations.

Extractions: The science: In a complex plasma, particles interact with one another with a shielded Coulomb interaction. The can be trapped in a stable equilibrium by the natural electric fields in the plasma. They are imaged with a camera and laser illumination, so that we can see every particle in the suspension, and record their positions and velocities. Under laboratory conditions with particles larger than a micron, gravity causes sedimentation of the particles, forming a thin horizontal layer at the bottom of the plasma. While many exciting experiments are done using these laboratory systems, there are a whole class of experiments in three dimensions which are enabled by eliminating gravity. These scientific topics include, for example, crystalline structure, the melting/freezing transition, defect structure and dynamics, fluid interface phenomena, shocks, waves, and instabilities.

DIME is a NASA competition program which allows teams to design and build a science experiment which will then be operated in a NASA microgravity drop tower facility. This program is a project-oriented activity which lasts one school year for the selected teams. Teams will be comprised of high-school-aged students from (for example) a science class, a group of classes, a science club, or a scout troop. A team must have an adult advisor, such as a teacher or parent. When in orbit around Earth, a spacecraft has escaped only 10% of Earths gravitational pull. So why does everything appear to float?
