LOCAL ACCESS TRANSPORT AREAS (LATAs) As a vestige of the AT&T breakup, the "Baby Bells" or "RBOC's" historically have been restricted to operations within, but not between, LATAs; that is, they have been prohibited from providing long distance service. There are 164 LATAs in the United States, 5 in Michigan, as seen in this map. Under the Federal Telecommunications Act of 1996, former Bell companies can compete in the long distance market once the FCC certifies that their local markets are open. In those handful of states that have opened up their long distance markets to such competition, consumers have benefited from sharply lower prices.

    Extractions: The land now known as Michigan's lower peninsula evolved on maps from a crude triangle or thumb to its present familiar mitten form. The five lakes were first depicted on a map in the late 17th century. Over the years myths were perpetuated, copied from one map to another, about Michigan's geography. One such myth was as an elevated, even mountainous, ridge down the center of the lower peninsula. Another was a misunderstaning of the southern points of Lakes Michigan and Erie; a misunderstanding that later caused problems with Ohio when Michigan sought statehood. Sanitary and Ship Canal opened. The flow of the Chicago River was reversed from Lake Michigan to the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. It consists of two peninsulas thrusting into the Great Lakes and has borders with Ohio and Indiana (S), Wisconsin (W), and the Canadian province of Ontario (N,E).
