Extractions: The Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) is one of the Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR) Facilities of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA/AOML is a part of the US Department of Commerce (DOC) and is located in Miami, Florida. AOML's mission is to conduct basic and applied research in oceanography, tropical meteorology, atmospheric and oceanic chemistry, and acoustics. Extractions: Researchers study the Arctic for signs of climate change. The CRSP division develops measurement systems and techniques and applies those systems/techniques to various NOAA research missions. Our research emphasis is on atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) physical processes and associated interactions with the surface (ocean, land, ice) and the free troposphere where we seek fundamental understanding to promote the development of parameterizations useful for numerical models and diagnostic studies. Our measurement system emphasis is in remote sensors on NOAA satellites or surface-based sensors developed at ETL mixed with complex integrated systems of in situ sensors for studies of surface interactions. This division has participated in projects involving all three of NOAA's major research themes: Short term forecasting (FASTEX, PACJET)

Extractions: The early history of meteorology at Iowa State University involved programs in different departments that are still closely related to it. Although the first meteorology course was taught in Geology in 1908, apparently little was done within the Geology Department during the period which ended in 1945. World War II stimulated the training of meteorologists, and some faculty in physics with this background began active research programs in the mid-40's. This led to the Meteorolgy program being transferred to the Physics Department in 1945. About this same time the Agronomy Department began a program in Agricultural Climatology. H.C.S. Thom, who was the State Climatologist and also the Meteorologist in Charge on the U.S. Weather Bureau Office in Des Moines, was appointed to the faculty position in Agronomy and directed graduate research in Agricultural Climatology. Robert Shaw began his Ph.D. program under Thom and was appointed an instructor in Agricultural Climatology in 1946. Shaw stayed at Iowa State upon completion of his Ph.D. in 1949 and retired after a distinguished career in 1986. In 1964 the last meteorologist in the Physics Department resigned and the Physics Department requested that the meteorology program be formally dropped from their administrative responsibilities. The Dean of Sciences and Humanities felt that meteorology should not be totally lost from the college, so he provided 1/2 of a faculty position and received a commitment of an additional 1/2 position from the Agronomy Department. Thus, a jointly funded meteorology position was added to the Geology Department. At the same time the name was changed to the Department of Earth Science. W. Gale Biggs was hired as an assistant professor of Meteorology (Earth Science) and Climatology (Agronomy) in 1965.

Extractions: is a unique large scale laboratory for soil-machine interaction. It owns one of the largest soil bins facility, worldwide. The laboratory is named after the late IDF General Yekutiel Adam. Dynamic behavior of vehicles, trafficability, new approaches in mechanical and computerized control, sensing buried obstacles, and transmission by hydrostatic methods are studied in this laboratory. The Materials Laboratory offers teaching and research facilities for soil mechanics and physical properties of fruit and vegetables. The laboratory is equipped with a direct shear device, triaxle shear system, consolidation testing device, radioactivity instrument for measuring soil density and moisture content as well as other equipment to classify and sample soil. In addition, there is a universal loading machine (Instron) that can load up to five tons and a self-developed nondestructive measurement system for evaluating fruit and vegetable quality.

Extractions: BS in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences The campus of San Francisco State University (SFSU) lies within the city of San Francisco, on the San Francisco Peninsula in a spectacular setting overlooking the Pacific Ocean. SFSU's Department of Geosciences, part of the College of Science and Engineering and an affiliate of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, is housed on the 5th and 6th floors of Thornton Hall. The undergraduate program in oceanography at SFSU is administered by the Department of Geosciences. As of Fall Semester 2002, the BS in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences with Concentrations in Meteorology and Oceanography will be available to students. This degree is the only one of its kind to be offered in either the California State University or University of California systems. The new degree is distinguished by its interdisciplinary core in meteorology and oceanography completed by all students regardless of concentration. The new degree will offer oceanography students several options or emphases that will be chosen with the help of a faculty advisor. These emphases are designed to prepare students for professional careers in physical oceanography or in applied oceanography. Extractions: Study of the planetary climate and environment Along with the rapid expansion of the Mocage atmospheric chemistry model, the CNRM is pursuing ongoing efforts to perfect climate simulation models. These models enable the representation of physical phenomena and various couplings such as atmosphere-ocean and snow-atmosphere. In parallel, experiments to simulate the climate of the 21st century are being conducted using scenarios suggested by the international scientific community. Researchers also study changes in snow or the ice pack in case of global warming, and the "regionalisation" of warming forecasts. Experimental campaigns The study of major atmospheric phenomena most frequently requires the implementation of experimental campaigns and the CNRM contributes actively to these. Such campaigns provide a harvest of invaluable scientific information, opening the way to years of work for hundreds of researchers throughout the world. So one or more of these events occur each year, such as the Map research experiment on the Alps in 1999, or in 2001 the Pomme experiment on the interaction between ocean and atmosphere, and the Escompte campaign on pollution in the Marseille region.
