    Extractions: Support Notes for Medical Microbiology (Leeds) This site consists of a list of apparently unrelated topics ranging from ecology to molecular virology and public health. The information was not very comprehensive and mainly comprised links to other Web sites. Nevertheless, there are some excellent graphics including a picture of the cholera toxin B pentamer. There is only one microbiology tutorial at this site - "A dose of the pox..." - about the history and eradication of smallpox. This site represents, in my opinion the ideal format for online tutorials. It is very interactive with subsequent pages being introduced with questions such as "So what happened next?" and "How did vaccination catch on?". This style captured my attention and I was very interested to find that in 1774, a farmer named Benjamin Jesty had written about his experience vaccinating his wife and two sons with cowpox taken from the udder of an infected cow before Jenner tried it himself. This format, however, is probably not ideal for conveying large volumes of textual information. Perhaps this should not be the intention. Rather, such online tutorials should perhaps whet students’ appetites for information in a particular area by providing an overview with titbits of interesting information not often found in books. This can then be supplemented by book-work as the Web is unlikely to take the place of textbooks in the near future, if it ever does.

Entry is open to graduates, usually with degrees that have been validated by the Institute of Biomedical Science which is also responsible for assessing eligibility for state registration with the Health Professions Council Clinical Scientists work in diagnostic laboratories and pathology departments in large hospitals and medical schools. The Public Health Laboratory Service (PHLS) is a major employer of clinical microbiologists, some of whom work in reference laboratories or as epidemiologists. Work focuses on disease diagnosis, treatment and surveillance; clinical scientists often collaborate closely with health care professionals. There is some opportunity to carry out research and development projects in the specialisms of bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology.

Departments You are here: Home Courses Masters Degrees This course aims: to provide a comprehensive theoretical knowledge of medical microbiology including the spread of micro-organisms, disease causation, diagnosis, treatment and/or prevention of pathogens of major significance to public health and advanced practical training in this diverse field. The increasing incidence of microbial infections worldwide is being compounded by the rapid evolution of drug-resistant variants and opportunistic infections by other organisms. This scenario and the morbidity and mortality associated with chronic infections and some childhood microbial diseases, require well-trained medical microbiologists. To meet this need, the course provides the theoretical knowledge and practical training necessary for accurate laboratory diagnoses in the hospital environment or basic research in academia and the pharmaceutical industry. Graduates from this course go into careers related to medical microbiology in research establishments, the pharmaceutical industry, hospitals or medical schools. Term 1 Teaching Unit details (PDF 123K) Students take a total of six study units, one from each timetable slot. A typical selection of units is given below; not all units will be available in any one year. Some units can be taken only after consultation with the Course Organiser.
