There are more than 20 newspapers published in the island, which has a population of 1.2 million. There are two main dailies l'express and Le Mauricien , with a circulation of around 25,000 and 35,000 respectively. There are a number of weeklies, the most important being Week-End (circulation 80,000) and Le Defi-Plus (50,000). There is only one newspaper published completely in English ( News on Sunday ), the rest being in French. Most of government adverts are in English and a lot of readers' letters to the Editor are in English. The Mauritian press has always been very jealous of its independance and freedom. There are two main press groups: a) Le Mauricien Ltd, which publishes 4 titles (the daily Le Mauricien and the weeklies Week-End Week-End Scope and Turf Magazine ), which are all market leaders in their respective fields; and, b) La Sentinelle Ltd, which publishes the daily l'express The Mauritian press is one very much concerned with local and regional (South African Development Community) issues. It tries also to give guidelines towards the building up of a "true" Mauritian society and is often perceived by succesive governments as a threat!

    Extractions: Making a new start The first step toward an Action Plan for Eastern Africa was a fact-finding mission to the region in 1981. Seven experts, including a land-use planner, a pollution expert and sanitary and industrial engineers, were asked to identify the main environmental problems of the region as they relate to management of marine and coastal resources and environmental quality. Another of their key tasks was to help the Governments of the region identify what they needed to carry out the Action Plan. A meeting of experts selected by their Governments (Seychelles, September 1982) prepared the first draft of an action plan, identified problems to be tackled as priorities, and invited UNEP to help in solving them without waiting for the formal adoption of the action plan. The workshop participants named 10 first priority regional projects which UNEP and United Nations agencies were asked to initiate during 1983. They included work on developing a network of environmental pollution laboratories, on providing training facilities for environmental control technicians, and on developing a network of oil pollution monitoring centres. Two other priority projects were concerned with assessment of the environmental impact of economic and social developments and a regional environmental education programme.

Yesterday, Mauritian and Comoran representatives attacked each other in the UN. Regional cooperation is of growing importance in the Indian Ocean islands off the African coast. But lately, regional cooperation has consisted of the countries Mauritius, Seychelles and Madagascar, leaving Comoros out. After several years of internal conflict and crisis, Comoros is reaching stabilisation reviewing its Constitution and heading for a federal state. This provokes the neighbours, the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), threatening their ideal of not giving concessions to separatist movements.
