Pelee rises from the northwest shore, and from Fort-de-France on the southwest coast it is an imposing sight, especially on days when its peak is not shrouded in clouds. The northern section of Martinique is the most verdant, with the rain forest and the Parc Naturel, ranging over the several volcanic remnants that are led by Mt. Pelee to the lower foothills and eventually to the flatter lands in the south. Rocher du Diamant (Diamond Rock) juts from the sea off the south coast and the tail of salamander-shaped Martinique curls off the south from the east coast toward the west. The deep, protected harbor, punctuated with the island's capital of Fort-de-France, is traversed several times daily by ferry boats taking passengers to the neighboring centers at Pointe du Bout, Anse Mitan and Anse-a-l'Ane. The 350 km coastline varies greatly. S teep cliffs with black and grey sandy coves predominate the north and Atlantic coasts, while calmer seas with large white or gold sand beaches in the south and on the Caribbean coast.

Later the Caribs tribe appeared on the island and the two sometimes lived in harmony, sometimes not. Official colonization by France began 1635, when tobacco and cotton were grown by European laborers and a few African slaves. By the end of the century, sugar plantations using slave labor had come to dominate the island's economy. To this day, many island inhabitants speak a Creole language which evolved from the mixture of European (mostly French), native American (Carib) and West African languages. After the French Revolution banned slavery, the British occupied the Martinique at the request of the land owners from 1794 until 1802 when Napoleon reinstated slavery (was this at the behest of his Martinique-born wife, Josephine?). Slavery was abolished for good in 1815, and in the absence of cheap labor, ships from India arrived in the years to follow. These workers added to the cultural rainbow of the island's peoples. Martinique's one active volcano, Montagne Pelée (1,397 m), is situated to the northwest, which had its last major eruption in 1902.

Male villagers are all fishermen and have to shout to each other on the sea to communicate and indicate good fishing spots. Amusingly, they maintain the same volume of voice when passing and greeting each other in the small streets as they return from labour and night falls. Weirdo number two A person who's a bit "behind" mentally walks around the village. He won't do any harm; every villager seems to have (take) the right to criticise him when he approaches tourists too near. He obeys every villager.
