Chiefs continue to wield a great deal of authority over land ownership and usage. Food cultivation on the islands has always been catch as catch can. Fish and seafood provide the bulk of the nonvegetable dishes, with tuna a staple of the catch. On land, breadfruit, coconut, arrowroot, yams, taro and pumpkins are the traditional mealtime mainstays. With the increasing Westernization of the Pacific, North American junk food has been increasingly dominating more traditional staples; on the rise too are the related health problems of obesity, diabetes, high blood-pressure and alcoholism. In travels between the islands, early inhabitants learned to read the patterns of the waves and the positions of the stars, and they made stick charts to record and pass on their observations to less experienced navigators. By tying flat strips of wood together in imitation of the wave patterns and attaching cowry shells to the sticks to represent particular islands and atolls, the experienced navigator could memorize the patterns for when he was out at sea - the charts were not actually taken on the journeys. Although few modern Marshallese know how to read the charts, many still make them for their popularity as souvenirs.

These notes are intended to help visitors to the Marshall islands feel comfortable here and enjoy their dealings with the Marshallese people. Some examples of appropriate and inappropriate behavior are given below, and these will be useful. More important than specific rules of Marshallese culture is the understanding that there is a culture and that it is mediated by rules. Behavior here is not random, but rather it is regulated by long-standing mutual expectations as to how people will and ought to behave. People do the things they do for good reasons. At a Glance The Marshallese have had no less then four millennia to adapt to life on coral atolls. Life in small, face-to-face communities with little privacy and no anonymity places special demands on people. They must be able to cooperate; they must minimize disputes; and they must be able to settle or smooth over such disagreements as they arise. Kindness, control of anger, politeness, a gentle demeanor, tolerance, and forgiveness are thus highly valued traits among the Marshallese... Generosity is another characteristic which may be related to the conditions of life on tropical islands. Honor accrues to the fisherman who distributes his catch and the gardener who shares the fruits of his orchard and garden. This is in distinct contrast to the farming of cereal crops in the so-called Temperate Zones, where the harvest is stored for sale or to eke out the winter, and prestige goes to the one who accumulates the most.

Extractions: Apart from being a very successful author of short stories and poetry Jane Downing has put together a number of inspiring children's books which captured the imagination of many children of Pacific Island nations. It all began with the editing of a collection of legends and traditions of the Marshall Islands, while residing on Majuro Atoll. Published in 1992, Bwebwenatoon Etto. A Collection of Marshallese Legends and Traditions was the first compilation of Marshallese oral traditions in book form with specifically the Marshall Islands education system in mind. The book was amply illustrated with pen drawings by two artists resident in the Marshall Islands, Amram Enos and Paul Kingsbury. Both have created illustrations for First Day Covers for the Alele Museum's philatelic programme. The images suited the illustration requirements of the collection perfectly. Since then, the text of the traditions, without the illustrations, has been produced as an on-line text as part of a site on the Marshall Islands.
