Extractions: About the teaching program: Courses available at OIMB: OIMB offers formal courses in the fall, spring and summer terms for upper class and graduate majors in biology, general science, and environmental studies/science. Classes are small with a maximum of 24 students and are designed for juniors, seniors, and first year graduate students. Field trips and lab activities are emphasized. During fall and spring terms, students must be registered with University of Oregon, but guest student status can be arranged. Students from other institutions should complete a Guest Student Application and send it to OIMB. Summer term courses are open to all qualified students and do not require the guest student application. Students must have completed either BI 211-213 or BI 251-253 or an equivalent to take courses OIMB. Graduate students are in residence during all four terms of the academic year, pursuing research leading to either the M.S. or the Ph.D. degree. Mellon Foundation contributed significant funds to PISCO-related research before and since the consortium's inception. The Mellon Foundation currently supports two efforts that greatly enhance PISCO research: 1) complementary, parallel research and training programs on an inter-hemispheric scale that brings together scientists from the U.S., Chile, New Zealand, and South Africa, and 2) genetic studies that help PISCO scientists uncover connectivity among sites at local and geographic scales. Lundeen Marine Biology Fund In 1997, Robert and Betty Lundeen established the Lundeen Marine Biology Fund at Oregon State University. This generous contribution enabled scientists at OSU to demonstrate the feasibility of using new instruments to study nearshore marine ecosystems. In addition, the funding provides support for undergraduate and graduate students to conduct ecological research and become engaged in marine policy and outreach activities. The Robert W. and Betty C. Lundeen Marine Biology Fund was critical in demonstrating initial "proof of concept" and in doing so, led directly to the establishment of PISCO. It continues to provide important resources for unanticipated research and policy activities and opportunities for students.

Extractions: Two to three mornings each week during the school year a different elementary or middle school class visits the UA campus to participate in the Marine Discovery Program. Students dissect sharks and squid, hold live starfish and sea cucumbers, and see evidence in marine fossils of a time when the Tucson area was covered by an ancient sea. The outside stairs of the Chemistry and Biological Sciences (Koffler) Building thunder as thirty-two children stampede to the fifth floor for a 2-hour workshop in one of the teaching laboratories, where the students are led through a variety of interactive stations on different topics in marine science. Topics include marine fossils, shark, perch and squid dissection, marine conservation, and fish diversity. University undergraduates are responsible for instruction in the workshops, and they develop and construct each of the interactive stations. In return, the university students receive four units of upper-division science credit, while gaining a great feeling of satisfaction by increasing their own knowledge through teaching others and, in the process, greatly contributing to the learning of children in the community. In addition, the undergraduates are excellent ambassadors for what the UA has to offer to a future student. The ethnic diversity and high proportion of women among I undergraduates in Marine Discovery also works to dash stereotypes held by many youngsters that scientists are exclusively "white men in lab coats".
