Extractions: The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences has an outstanding reputation for quality research both within Australia and internationally. Research within BEES is clustered within two general thematic areas ; Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Change and Sustainability. Within these two themes there are four focal points for research, which are described in more detail below: 1) Water and Sustainable Ecosystems; 2) Vertebrate Ecology and Conservation; 3) Temperate Marine Ecosystems, and; 4) Spatial Information Systems. Other areas of research interest within the School include resource management and a diversity of interests within the biological and earth sciences. BEES attracts over $2.5 M in external research finding, both via competitive funding from the Australian Research Council and a diversity of additional sources of basic and applied funding. Over 100 marine scientists work in the Departments of Botany , Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental and Geographical Science , Geological Sciences, Oceanography , Surveying and Zoology, many of them full-time researchers sponsored by outside funding organisations. Oceanography is the general term applied to the scientific study of the sea.
