Extractions: CTRL+D The Dr. Gendreau Personal Care Home has provided health care to the elderly and disabled since 1975. The Personal Care Home is a non-profit faith based charitable organization governed by an eleven person Board of Directors. In 1992 the Adult Day Program was introduced for people living in the region. Adult Day Program services have increased from two days per week in 1992 to our present program which operates five days per week. A major construction project was completed in 1996 which increased the capacity of the Home from 40 to 65 rooms. One of the rooms has been set aside to serve as a respite room. In 1996 the Personal Care Home accepted the responsibility to provide administration, housekeeping and maintenance services to the tenants of Les Trois Villas. We are providing these services on behalf of Manitoba Housing. In 1997 we accepted the responsibility to provide the same services to the Leisure Apartments. These two building are comprised of 31 bedroom suites and 21 bachelor suites. They are independant living homes for seniors. Rent is income based and rooms are rented out on a first come, first serve basis. The year 2000 marks the 25th anniversary of the Gendreau Personal Care Home. Visit our Hall of Fame and you'll find the names, faces, events, and places that have put Manitoba on the map. Here you'll find a bird's eye view of how the organization and delivery of amateur sport has grown and changed over the past three decades. Throughout, you'll see how the Manitoba Sports Federation (MSF) and the Sport Directorate have worked in tandem and with numerous other partners to build one of the leading amateur sport communities in Canada. The Sixties Celebrations and New Possibilities It's the 1960's, full of happenings and happenstance. The Bombers win the Grey Cup in 1961 and again in 1962 when they defeated the Hamilton Ticats 28 - 27 in what became known as the "Fog Bowl". It's a decade full of celebrations and new possibilities. Through the Fitness and Amateur Sport Act of 1961, the Federal and Provincial governments establish a 50/50 cost-sharing arrangement which sees funding available for the development of amateur sport available for the first time.

These are the memories of a world at war. A WWII Corvette Rises in a heavy sea. It was during these tumultuous times that so many young prairie men from towns like Carmen, Portage, The Pas and Dauphin went out to join the navy. Nobody could predict the connection between the flat prairies and a call to the sea, but once the war was over it was undeniable. Many Manitobans served their country through naval service. The goal of the Naval Museum of Manitoba is to promote the history of Canada's Navy, especially as it pertains to those Manitobans who have served with the Navy. The Naval Museum captures a moment in history, remembering the lifestyle, sense of duty and patriotism of Canadian sailors during times of peace and war. In creating this archive, many Manitobans have served their community by donating artifacts, time and energy to a successful effort.

Extractions: Flin Flon History The city of Flin Flon is the major mining community in northwestern Manitoba and northeastern Saskatchewan. Located just over 800 kilometres north-northwest of Manitoba's capital city of Winnipeg, parts of the community are both in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Flin Flon is also the gateway to nothern Manitoba's bustling tourism industry. Abundant mineral resources enabled the small village to grow to the present status of city. The Flin Flon property was originally named in 1915 after Professor Josiah Flintabbatey Flonatin (see left), a character in the novel "The Sunless City" by J. E. Preston Muddock. The Island Falls Dam was constructed on the Churchill River about 95 km northwest of Flin Flon to provide power for the mine and the smelter, and so 1927 saw the formation of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company. The Canadian National Railway line was extended from The Pas, Manitoba in 1928. The new railway brought hundreds of men from many countries to the area in search of jobs. The settlement came to be known as Flin Flon at that time. During the 1930s and 40s, the community continued to grow and assume an air of permanence. Flin Flon was incorporated as a municipality in 1933. Facilities and municipal organization expanded with the very active community and Flin Flon was incorporated as a town in 1946. Flin Flon became a city in 1970.

Extractions: The Association of Community Theatres of Manitoba (ACT) Inc. had its beginnings in the Fall of 1976. At that time, several active theatre patrons perceived the need for a Community Theatre Festival program. This program was sponsored by the Manitoba Theatre Workshop (now Prairie Theatre Exchange) and supported in its development by the appointment of a Director of the Outreach Program to the Festival Advisory Board. In 1978-1979, the Community Theatre Festival was realized. In 1982, the Board changed its name to The Association of Community Theatres of Manitoba Inc. to encompass the growing scope of the program from a local, to that of a provincial organization. December of 1987, however, found the Association with a depleted executive and eroded rural participation. It was then that a steering committee was formed and a new executive was elected in February of 1988. The new executive acted quickly and in the 1988-89 term initiated new memberships, appointed regional representatives in all regions and co-ordinated Regional Workshops. This began the renewal of the Association's relationship with community theatre groups. ACT is now a strong, non-profit organization that represents amateur theatre groups throughout the province, and actively pursues the goals and objectives outlined in the Association's mandate. Since 1991, ACT has been a registered charity with the Province of Manitoba.

Extractions: AGSM History The AGSM has a very proud history that is not commonly known. Its earliest inception was within Brandon College (a pioneer privately funded Baptist institution) which taught art courses to students, faculty and the community from 1890 through 1907. At that time music, drama and visual arts were offered. Due to financial constraints the visual arts were discontinued. The Brandon Art Club (1907 1959) was formed when the College discontinued its arts program. It was comprised of an active, community based amateur membership who were primarily interested in art appreciation, informal study of art history and painting/sketching and exhibiting their own work. At that time members and community citizens also collected works of art by the then nationally known contemporary artists for their homes. In 1959 the Brandon Allied Arts Council was formed to broaden the Art Clubs offerings into studio activity involving several visual art and craft disciplines. They found a permanent home at the Welcome Inn where their studios were located. In 1984 the Allied Arts Council moved to the present location on Princess Avenue. The club grew in strength and carried on until 1989 when the AGSM was formed. The AGSM became a natural evolution in the development of the visual arts in Southwestern Manitoba. While continuing the extensive Allied Arts Council studio program, a new contemporary art gallery was formed. For the first time there became an emphasis in exhibit creation, in presenting shows of a contemporary nature and in the profiling of highly talented Manitoba visual artists.

In 1989, this Council with other sport representatives developed a constitution that is the basis for today's Sport Medicine Council of Manitoba. The main purpose of the SMCM is to facilitate and coordinate member associations in common endeavors in sport medicine and sport sciences such as conferences, symposia, research, and public education. Other objectives are to initiate and promote education and research programs related to the field of sport medicine and sport sciences and to establish guidelines designed to ensure high standards of care for sport participants. The SMCM Board of Directors determines policy and procedure and directs the activities of the Council in consultation with an Executive Committee. The SMCM Executive is elected, consisting of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, the Drugs in Sport Chair and presently two Members-at-large. Each member group has one representative on the Council. The first meetings took place in 1902 with the creation of a French literary circle attended by Mme Moreau de Bauvière and presided over by Professeur Osborne, who later became the first President of the Alliance Française du Manitoba. The actual founding of the school took place on the 29th of October, 1915, at the University of Manitoba's French department. The AF's purpose is the diffusion of French Language and of francophone culture. Its cultural and linguistic policies are defined by the Board of Directors. The director, who is a French civil servant at the disposal of the association, ensures the implementation of these policies. The Alliance Française du Manitoba has developped and evolved since its first meetings were held at the University in 1915. An important turning point was passed when it officially became a language school thanks to courageous volunteers... in 1984, the French government sent a civil servant to run the school's daily activities. Ce dernier devint premier Président de l'Alliance Française du Manitoba, le 29 octobre 1915, au département de Français de l'Université du Manitoba, . Cette association a pour objectif la diffusion du Français et de la culture francophone. Sa politique culturelle et linguistique est définie par un Conseil d'Administration élu chaque année. Un directeur, fonctionnaire français mis à disposition de l'association, en assure la mise en oeuvre. L'Alliance Française du Manitoba s'est développée, a évolué depuis les premières réunions tenues à l'Université, en 1915. Un pas important a été franchi lorsqu'elle est devenue école de langue, grâce à de courageuses et courageux bénévoles En 1984, le gouvernement de la France envoyait un fonctionnaire pour en diriger les activités quotidiennes. These enterprising women were the first to be admitted to Syracuse University. Within a month of setting foot on campus, they decided that they were not satisfied with merely participating in the classroom. They wanted to participate in the mens fraternities as well. Denied admission to these fraternities, our Founders chose to take matters into their own hands and create their own fraternity for women. They envisioned a far-reaching sisterhood form the outset, and dreamed of establishing chapters in the "unpeopled West" and at universities beyond the US borders. Alpha Phi in Canada It was not long before our Founders dreams were being implemented. In 1905, six forward-thinking young women at the University of Toronto formed a small club called Psi Delta and petitioned to become an Alpha Phi chapter. In 1906, Xi Chapter at U of T was founded and Alpha Phi became an International Womens Fraternity. Alpha Phis Toronto chapter is the longest running NPC chapter in Canada.
