Extractions: VINCE BRIFFA M.A. Fine Art (Leeds) Vince Briffa is a TV and film director with vast experience in the production of commercials and documentaries for television, graphics. After studying Fine Arts and Media Practice at Edinburgh College of Arts in Scotland and Leeds University in UK, Vince worked in the graphic arts field for several years, specialising in illustration and art direction. From design for print he moved into TV production after a period of training on Quantel Paintbox. Besides being winner of the Art Director's Award and the Best Commercial Award (Direction) for 1995 in the Malta Advertising awards and the Best Design Award by Zanders of Germany, Vince is also an accomplished fine artist in his own right who has held solo exhibitions in Malta, the USA, the UK, Germany, Poland, Russia, Egypt, Italy, Austria and Liechtenstein. He was also chosen to represent Malta at the 1999 Venice Biennale and the 1996, 1999 and 2000 editions of the Edinburgh Festival. He is currently reading for his PhD at the University of Lancashire in the UK. ALFRED CARABOTT Trained by Wavefront of Belgium, Alfred is responsible for the 3D visualization and animation team. After a long career in the graphic design for print and architectural fields he has managed to establish himself as a leading figure in three dimensional modeling and animation, specializing in architectural visualization, corporate presentations and programme promotion and strings. His work has also been recognized by the Malta Advertising Awards, and he has been instrumental key visualization projects of both national and international dimension including the Portomaso-Hilton Project, Gasan Property-Milner Grove development and in the creation of documentary graphics for docu-drama The Great Siege of Malta.

Extractions: In 1530 the Spanish Emperor or Charles V ceded Malta to the Order of St. John in exchange for an annual rent of one live falcon. Alas, the Maltese falcon has been hunted into extinction after the last known pair disappeared in the mid-1980's. On our walks on the island of Gozo the shell casings left behind by the hunters were all that remain. Malta has a rich history dating back to c. 5000 BC. Many pottery relics from the Neolithic period can be found in the excellent Museum of Archaeology in Valletta. More artifacts are also on display in the Archaeology Museum in the Citadel in Victoria on Gozo. My favorites include the pair of heads that look like George and Martha Washington and a piece of bone that resembles a ruler. As early as 3600 BC the early inhabitants of the Maltese Islands were building impressive temple structures like the ruins at Ggantija on the island of Gozo. Up close, one can see carvings on the rocks. A common pattern is one with a swirl. There's also plenty of graffitti. Tarxien, the last of the temple building phases, ended around 2600 BC (about the same time the Great Pyramid in Egypt was built). The Tarxien Temples were my favorites of the ruins in Malta. The important artifacts have been moved to the safety of Valletta's Museum of Archaeology, but replicas of some of the important finds have been placed around the temple site.

The modern historian who endeavours to reconstruct the life of the primitive Christians has two sources of information to draw upon, namely: literary and monumental sources. By literary sources is commonly understood the existing remains of early Christian literature; monumental sources consist of the various classes of objects of a material character surviving from antiquity, which were produced by Christians or under Christian influence, sepulchral inscriptions, paintings, sculptures churches, and the products of the minor arts. The principal aim of Christian archaeology, as indicated, is to ascertain all that is possible relative to the manners and customs of the early Christians from the monuments of Christian antiquity. Any attempt to determine the date when the period loosely designated "Christian Antiquity" gave place to the medieval period must of necessity be more or less arbitrary. As a consequence of this difficulty, differences of opinion exist among archaeologists as to the chronological limits to be assigned to Christian archaeology. Extractions: Early 8th milennium B.C. The World's First Town Some 9,000 years ago, in a grassy region of south-central Turkey, a group of hunter-gatherers discovered a new means of survival: farming. They then established a settlement that over the next millennium would grow to 32 acres and house up to 10,000 people. This Neolithic settlement at Catal Hoyuk (cha-TAHL hoo-yook) was first excavated in 1961, when James Mellaart of the British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara sank a trench in the site's 65-foot-high mound. Over the next five years he uncovered a honeycomb of almost identical, rectangular, flat-roofed mudbrick houses, which had square living rooms leading into long, narrow storerooms. Each of the houses contained about 270 square feet of living space, suggesting that they were residences of nuclear families. Windows were placed up high, near the roof, and the open spaces between the houses were used as garbage dumps. Curiously, the houses had no doors. Our Neolithic ancestors used portable ladders to enter their houses through the roof. Catal Hoyuk's art was preserved by the white mud plaster that was regularly applied to building walls. One building had 120 layers of protective coating.

The program, which is based on semester courses offered by the Dept. of Arabic and Near Eastern Studies, comprises around 34 contact hours of lectures, complemented by another 16 hours of field trips to various interesting archaeological and historical sites. The introductory lectures on the Semitic languages as well as the overview of the history of the Arab and Hebrew languages, offer a good introduction to the structure of the major Semitic languages used in the Middle East. Lectures on the civilizations of Ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Syria-Palestine, and the Phoenicians illustrate how the major feats in the history of civilization originated in the Near East. The Koran, Islamic Philosophy, the Arab Cinema, and Arab Malta will also be dealt with. Field trips will illustrate the rich heritage of the Maltese Islands which were more than once influenced by Near Eastern culture. Summer School Co-Directors: Professor Anthony J. It dominates, in one wide sweep, the Island's historic Grand Harbour - one of the finest natural ports in Europe. Within its limited boundaries, the city reflects some of Malta's rich heritage of archaeology, history, architecture, art and culture. Viewing is essential. It's also worth spending a good part of a morning walking round this beautiful city. A camera would come in handy, particularly for the views on both sides of Valletta from the streets, which are laid out in a grid-like fashion. The more important collections covering Maltese archaeology are housed in the Auberge de Provence, Valletta, one of the Inns of the Knights of St John. Collections of prehistoric pottery, sculpture, statuettes, stone implements and personal ornaments recovered from the Maltese megalithic temples and other pre-historic sites are exhibited. Typical examples of tomb furniture of the Punic and Roman periods are also displayed. After two years of refurbishment, the Museum now boasts new prehistoric galleries . In addition to these galleries, the Museum will eventually have floors dedicated to the Bronze, Punic, Roman, Byzantine, Baroque and modern ages.

Extractions: Malta Project 2001 Project Director: Ayse Devrim Atauz Summer 2001 was the second season of the Systematic Survey of the Maltese coastline by INA in cooperation with the National Museum of Archaeology. The objective of the present project is to locate the underwater cultural remains (i.e. shipwrecks, anchors, submerged settlements, aircraft wrecks, harbor structures) in the Maltese territorial waters, to document the discovered sites, and to conduct excavations when warranted. Our ultimate goal is to determine the role played by the Maltese islands throughout the history of the Mediterranean seafaring by answering questions such as: where the main harbors/anchorages were located, what products were exchanged/traded, and how did the major historical events effect the nature of long-distance trade and traders that frequented Malta. The growing results of our work signals that rewarding progress has been made in providing answers to our research questions.
