Extractions: She was made of clay by an unknown priest/ess approximately 2700 B.C. At her time the island she was adored on was green with trees and inhabited with a folk that didn't know the need to protect itself against an enemy. She's known as "Sleeping Lady" and was found in the Hypogeum at Hal Safieni. The dreams survive. The Ggantija Temple on Gozo. This is one of the oldest temples on Malta/Gozo. It consists of two separate sub-temples of which the bigger one, in the south, was built at 3600 B.C. The northern one was finished approximately 600 years later. The third photograph shows the entrance stone with holes made maybe as a part of the temple door. The biggest stone is 4 x 5,5 meter and has weight of some 55 tons. The plan of the Ggantija Temple. So for those interested in archaeology, but perhaps do not have much time on their hands, this is the place to visit. And for those interested in having a go at excavation, during the months of June and July, the university offers a short Summer School in Archaeology. I attended one in 1996 and still have the fondest memories of it....not only was it a lot of fun but I also met up with some very interesting people. You don't need to have any previous experience...it consists of 2 weeks lectures which include visits to all the important prehistoric sites on Malta and another 2-4 weeks exavation work. Extractions: Since the late 18th century the curious megalithic stone circle and the Ggantija temple on the Xaghra plateau of Gozo have been recorded by European travellers. In the 1820s, the Lieutenant Governor of Gozo, Otto Bayer conducted an "excavation" at the circle which was recorded by the local artist Charles de Brochtorff in 1825. Bayer unearthed a deep hole containing large megalithic structures. By the late 1830s, the site was filled and forgotten, and even the megalithic stones were removed from the circle. If it had not been for the paintings and drawings left behind by Charles de Brochtorff then memory of the site may well have been lost forever. Charles de Brochtorff painted the Circle at Xaghra, (in 1825) showing the great stone entrance. The stone circle had enclosed a ritual area, entered through a huge stone entrance which led the mourners across a stone threshold and probably down steps into the rugged caves. At the centre, was an area enclosed by elegant megalithic trilithon altars and a massive stone bowl. The many natural caverns and niches of the caves were divided off by walls and stone slabs. Extractions: Bristol CS Index Research Evidence from the archaeological record yields clues as to how our ancestors lived. However, our perceptions and analysis of this data may be clouded by the lack of surviving structures and intact landscapes that can be used to put this evidence into a better context. Recent developments in computer visualisation are providing powerful tools for modelling multi-dimensional aspects of the data collected by archaeologists. Computer graphic techniques can be used to reconstruct and visualise features of a site which may otherwise be difficult to appreciate. This new perspective may enhance our understanding of the environments in which our ancestors lived. The Department of Archaeology has extensive experience in investigating archaeological sites through excavation and interpretation. The Department of Computer Science has been engaged in research for a number of years in the field of photo-realistic computer graphics. INSITE is a multi-disciplinary collaboration which combines this and other expertise to achieve the three dimensional computer reconstruction and interactive photo-realistic visualisation of archaeological sites. Such a system will enable archaeologists to evaluate hypotheses concerning ritual performances, site utilisation, structure, contents and development of the area. Three areas currently being investigated include: the prehistoric temples of Malta (together with the University of Malta), the 19th century Zulu Royal Homestead of Mgungundlovu in South Africa (in conjunction with the Natal Museum) and the ``Rondel Tesetice-Kyjovice'' Neolithic circular structure in the Czech Republic (in collaboration with the Technical University of Brno and Masaryk University).

Saliba B.A. (Hons) Since the Phoenician inscription CIS, 1, 132, more commonly known as the Melitensia Quinta was unearthed, or publicly known in 1855 , a number of studies were published regarding its authenticity, decipherment, dating, its historical record, how it fits in the ancient history of Gozo and other aspects. The inscription (plates 1, 2 and 3) is a proclamation of the whole people of Gozo represented by an assembly and commemorates the construction and renovation of three 'objects' and four temples. Different authors give different dates of the inscription , the common dilemma being whether it is pre or post 218BC, the latter being the year when the Romans took over the Maltese islands from the Carthaginians. Although part of the inscription is missing, the remaining available text gives ample light on the socio-religious and political organisation of Gozo, moulded up in a Phoenician context.
