They are Muslims, speak Bahasa and are largely responsible for the political fortunes of the country. The Chinese comprise about a third of the population. They are Buddhists and Taoists, speak Hokkein, Hakka and Cantonese, and are dominant in the business community. The Indians account for about 10% of the population. They are mainly Hindu Tamils from southern India, they speak Tamil, Malayalam, and some Hindi, and live mainly in the larger towns on the west coast of the peninsula. There is also a sizeable Sikh community. Eurasians and indigenous tribes make up the remaining population. Despite Bahasa Malaysia being the official language, when members of these different communities talk to each other, they generally speak English, which was recently reinstated as the language of instruction in higher education. The main indigenous tribe is the Iban of Sarawak, who number 395,000. They are largely longhouse dwellers and live along the Rejang and Baram rivers. The Bidayuh (107,000) are concentrated on Sarawak's Skrang River. The Orang Asli (80,000) live in small scattered groups in Peninsular Malaysia. Traditionally nomadic agriculturalists, many have been absorbed into modern Malaysia.

There are many historically significant places of interest like Bukit Cina, Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, Hang Li Po's Well, Porta de Santiago, St. Paul's Church, Stadthuys, Church of St. Peter, Tranquerah Mosque, Melaka Museum, Christ Church, Portuguese Square, the Light and Sound Show, the Maritime Museum and the Baba-Nyonya Heritage Museum. Penang Penang is the oldest British settlement in Malaysia predating Melaka. It is also one of Malaysia's major tourist attractions which is hardly surprising as the 285sq km island has popular beach resorts, an intriguing and historically interesting town which is also noted for its superb food. Like Melaka, Penang has its fair share of museums and art galleries. However, a visitor to Penang should also take time to visit other sights like Fort Cornwallis, Wat Chayamangkalaram, State Temple, Penang Hill, Kek Lok Si Temple, Sri Mariamman Temple and the Botanical Gardens.

For visitors however, Sarawak's importance is in its diversity of the Dayak tribes and its areas of untouched jungle. Many of the tribes live along the major rivers running the length of the state in longhouses and villages where the entire population of the tribe lives under one roof with separate rooms leading on to one long communal verandah. Hospitality to visitors is a way of life in the longhouses and visitors are welcome to stay overnight in them.

This is culture, which is everything around our living. Before coming to Malaysia, I learned that Malaysia is a multicultural society and people here are tolerance to each other's culture. What are the reasons for that? I have found that the characteristic of Malaysia culture is due to the multi-ethnical society, which is led by the geographical location, the trading point between the East and the West and its historical background, being colonized by British, which led to a mass migration (from other Southeast Asian Countries) in 1930's. Therefore, we have to understand the multi-ethnicity in Malaysia before we can examine the Malaysia culture.
