Extractions: This chapter describes a set of utility routines that you can use to operate on dates and times. You can use these routines to get and change information about the current date, time, geographic location, time zone, and units of measurement. The routines described in this chapter return this information in a format that is best suited to the current script. As a result, you can facilitate localization of your application by using these date, time, and measurement utilities. To understand the material in this chapter, you need to be familiar with the international resources, especially the numeric-format and long-date-format resources, and the Script Manager. These topics are described in Inside Macintosh: Text . In addition, the chapter "Text Utilities" in Inside Macintosh: Text describes how to convert date and time information into strings of text. Many of the Date, Time, and Measurement Utilities were previously associated with other managers in the Macintosh system software, and several of these routines have been renamed. Table 4-4 on page 4-33 shows the original names and locations of the modified Date, Time, and Measurement Utilities routines.

To supplement what this module teaches in a brief couple of pages, it is highly recommended that you read the current Macintosh User's Guide , available to assistant's from the Help Desk. The most current version of the Mac OS supported by BCIS is 7.5.1, although there are earlier versions on some machines. This module is designed based on the most current version, but discrepencies are minimal. The areas we'll cover are: Turning the Mac Off and On There are two ways of turning a Mac on. You'll either find an on button in the front or rear of the computer (some monitors also need to be turned on, they'll have a button located somewhere on the monitor as well) or you can use the on key located in the upper right of the keyboard. To turn the Mac off, you need to select Shutdown under the Special category on the Finder menu bar . We'll talk about the menu bar and the desktop in a second. You should always turn the computer off using this process otherwise damages could occur. Warming Up The Start Up Disk When the Macintosh is turned on it looks for a start up disk. The start up disk contains the necessary system files for the Mac to run. Most commonly, the start up disk is the Hard Drive. When the Mac finds the start up disk it gives the "happy Mac" sign and proceeds to start up.
