Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Kuwait is situated in Southwest Asia, bordering the Persian Gulf, between Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Once a small Persian Gulf sheikhdom known locally as a center for pearl diving and boat construction, Kuwait came to international prominence in the post-World War II era largely because of its enormous oil revenues. Yet its history as an autonomous political entity is much older, dating back to the eighteenth century. At that time, the town of Kuwait was settled by migrants from central Arabia who arrived at what was then a lightly populated fishing village under the suzerainty of the Bani Khalid tribe of Arabia. Members of one family, the Al Sabah, have ruled Kuwait from that time. Since2009 Kuwait has been ruled by Shaykh Jabir al Ahmad al Jabir Al Sabah and his designated successor, Shaykh Saad al Abd Allah as Salim Al Sabah, the prime minister and crown prince. In the postwar period, these men have supported, with some ambivalence, the strengthening of popular participation in decision making as provided for in the constitution. Kuwait is located at the far northwestern corner of the Persian Gulf. ... Read more

Excerpt: Kuwait The Highway of Death refers to a road between Kuwait and Iraq, officially known as Highway 80. It runs from Kuwait City to the border towns of Abdali (Kuwait) and Safwan and then on to Basra. During the United Nations Coalition offensive in the Gulf War, retreating Iraqi military personnel were attacked on Highway 80 by American aircraft and ground forces on the night of February 2627, 1991, resulting in the destruction of some 2,000-2,500 vehicles and their occupants. The scenes of carnage on the road are some of the most recognisable images of the war. The road was repaired during the late 1990s, and was used in the initial stages of the 2003 invasion of Iraq by U.S. and British forces. On the main highway, aircraft bombed the front and rear of the massive vehicle column of Iraqi Regular Army, trapping the convoy, and leaving sitting targets for later airstrikes. When visited by journalists the main highway had been reduced to a long uninterrupted line of destroyed, damaged, and abandoned vehicl...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1031666 ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An interesting if somewhat inaccurate history of Kuwait
This book is part of a Young Adult (YA) series called "Creation of the Modern Middle East."All of the books contain an introduction by Dr. Akbar S. Ahmed, the Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies and Professor of International Relations, School of International Service, American University, in which he congratulates "Chelsea House Publishers for taking the initiative in helping us to understand the Middle East through this series."

I've read three now, and they are written in a newspaper-like manner (who, what, when, where, why):"In May 1999 the emir issued several history-making decrees dealing with women's suffrage, economic liberalization, and nationality." and "Muhammad died in 632...Islam spread rapidly among Arabian tribes, challenging the powerful Ottoman and Persian Empires."

Unfortunately the latter sentence contains a huge blooper. The Ottoman Empire doesn't appear until nearly a millennium after Muhammad's death. It would also be more accurate to say 'Sassanid' rather than 'Persian' Empire, as the Sassanid Empire was the last of the pre-Islamic Persian Empires.I was disturbed enough by the factual error to check the author's credentials at the end of this book:

"Susan Korman is the author of more than 20 books for young readers, including picture books, series fiction, and several biographies.Formerly a children's book editor at several publishing companies, she currently works as a freelance writer and is studying to become a school librarian. While Susan has never visited Kuwait, she enjoyed learning more about this Persian Gulf nation as well as the rest of the Middle East."

If the editors of the 'Creation of the Modern Middle East' series were going to use writers without much background in the Middle East, shouldn't they have edited the resulting manuscripts for factual content?

Kuwait's history, like many of the countries on the Arabian Peninsula is divided into before and after the discovery of oil.Pearl-diving, fishing, and ship-building were the main Kuwaiti occupations before the discovery of oil:

"In June 1946 the first barrel of oil was exported from Kuwait.[Sheik Ahmad] turned the silver valve wheel on a pipe, loading the first Britain-bound tanker with oil. With this ceremonious gesture, the Sheik also opened wide his country's door to unimaginable wealth."

This book takes us through the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq, and the rebuilding of this country after the Persian Gulf War.The author shapes much of her history through the personalities of Kuwait's rulers, the al-Sabahs, which makes it very readable.I just wish it could have been a bit more accurate.

3-0 out of 5 stars An interesting history that needed to be fact-checked.
Leila Merrell Foster's "Kuwait" is part of a Young Adult (YA) series called "Enchantment of the World" published by Children's Press, a division of Grolier Publishing Co., Inc.

Unfortunately this book contains the same blooper as another YA book on Kuwait that I recently read (Kuwait (Creation of the Modern Middle East) by Susan Korman) in that it has 7th Century Arabian tribes challenging the might of the powerful Ottoman Empire.

The Ottoman Empire didn't take shape until nearly a millennium after Muhammad's death.

Neither of these authors has been to Kuwait or has a background in Middle Eastern history, although Leila Merrell Foster claims to have visited "Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Egypt, Syria, Israel, Jordan, and Lebanon."

Since editors of these two books used writers without much background in the countries they wrote about, shouldn't they have edited the resulting manuscripts for factual content?

This author shapes her history of Kuwait around the Iraqi invasion of this country, and tells the story of the 1990 attack through the eyes of twelve-year-old Ahmad and his family, residents of Kuwait City.Unfortunately, what Ms. Foster does not tell the reader until her own brief autobiography at book's end is that "Ahmad, Fatima, and their family and friends are fictional characters."Since this book purports to be a true history, she should have informed us up front that her characters, who narrate the brutality of the Iraqi soldiers and the sufferings of the Kuwaitis, do not actually exist.

Kuwait's history, like many of the countries on the Arabian Peninsula is divided into before and after the discovery of oil.Pearl-diving, fishing, and ship-building were the main Kuwaiti occupations before the discovery of vast oil fields under its soil and in the Persian Gulf.It wasn't until after World War II that drilling began in earnest.

This author does a good job of balancing the positive and negative impact of oil money on Kuwaiti society. On the minus side, there are now more foreign workers in this small country (the size of New Jersey) than there are citizens, and Kuwait's neighbors (Iraq and Saudi Arabia) have made several attempts to take back what they consider to be 'their' territory.

Ultimately, this is an interesting book.I only wish it had been edited more thoroughly, and the author hadn't led me astray about her fictional characters (I became quite attached to them).

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, except for a few inaccuracies.
I liked this account of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and the history of the country itself. It has a lot of good information, but I think that theauthor or publisher should have consulted with more experts. The authormakes a few errors in her facts. An example is that she notes the sandstorms that strike Kuwait in the winter. Anyone who has lived in Kuwait cantell you that sandstorms are a summer phenominon. Several of photographsthat contain Arabic writing were printed backwards as well. While theerrors in this book do not discredit the book as a whole, they areinaccuracies that could have been avoided quite easily. Dispite theseerrors, I beleive that this book gives a fairly good picture of what Kuwaitis like. It also paints a good picture of what Kuwait was likeduring thetime between the Iraqi occupation and liberation. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Oil reserves in Kuwait make up 8% of the oil reserves in the world. Kuwait is OPEC's third largest oil producer and claims to hold approximately 104 billion barrels (16.5×10^9 m3). This includes half of the 5 billion barrels (790×10^6 m3) in the Saudi-Kuwaiti neutral zone which Kuwait shares with Saudi Arabia. Most of Kuwait's oil reserves are located in the 70 billion barrels (11×10^9 m3) Burgan field, the second largest conventional oil field in the world, which has been producing oil since 1938. Since most of Kuwait's major oil fields are over 60 years old, maintaining production rates is becoming a problem. ... Read more

Excerpt: Failaka Island (Arabic: ) is an island that belongs to Kuwait in the Persian Gulf. The island is 20 km off the coast of Kuwait City in the Persian Gulf. The name 'Failaka' is thought to be derived from the ancient Greek () - fylakio(n) "outpost". During the Dilmun era (from ca. 3000 BC), which saw the establishment of neighboring Bahrain, the island of Failaka was already developing its own unique culture and religious pantheon. Worship of the sun appears to have been practiced (see Shamash). Human sacrifice may also have taken place. In the 3rd century BC, during Alexander the Great's advance through the region on his way to India, the ancient Greeks colonized the island, which they named Icaria after the Greek island in the Aegean Sea and the mythical hero Icarus; apparently because they believed the island had a similar shape off its Aegean counterpart. Some elements of Greek mythology mixed with the local cults. The island was inhabited through the seventh or eighth century AD. It is unknown when the island was settled in modern times. Prior to the Iraqi Invasion, the island had over two thousand residents and several schools. The village of Az Zawr is situated near the middle of the northwest side of the island. It was the longest continuously inhabited location in Kuwait. During 1990 and 1991, the invading Iraqis depopulated the island, expelling all of its residents to the mainland. The Iraqi military mined the beaches and used the island's facilities and buildings for target practice. In 1991, the allied ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2335524 ... Read more
