Product Description
An extensive update, this edition includes, for the first time, 96 color photographs of salamanders, frogs and toads, turtles, lizards, and snakes, as well as an impressive collection of black-and-white photographs. The addition of 1,000 new records since the first edition has enhanced the accuracy of the maps, which identify counties where each animal has been found. Also new in this edition is information on a snake recently discovered in Kansas, the Cottonmouth, and three more kinds of amphibians and reptiles.

For each amphibian and reptile, this guide lists the standardized common name and the most current scientific name and information about identification, size, range in Kansas, habits and habitats, breeding, food, and endangered or threatened status when relevant. A bibliography with more than 1,300 entries and a complete identification key are also included. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I bought 5 copies
This is definitely the herpetological bible for anyone interested in reptiles and amphibs in kansas.I recommend it to anyone.I gave it as christmas gifts to people that are always telling tall tales of snakes and giant snappers they see.As far as the current common and scientific names go, hey its science, which is constantly changing and Joseph T. Collins is at the forefront of wildlife research in kansas. It truly is a shame he cant print a new book every year, but unless youre audobon, who really can.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a book!
The bible for any budding herpetolgist in the sunflower state, and the model for all subsequent state field guides. Absolutely amazing professional color photography, detailed range maps, and text written eloquently, for both the layman and the expert alike. Common names follow Collin's list which are also used by the Eastern and Central Peterson Field Guide to Amphibians and Reptiles (the most widely read and used reference on herpetology in the world)as well as the Center for North American Herpetology. Can't wait for the next edition!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but could be better
Generally good pictures and up-to-date information, but writing is stilted and uninteresting.Book claims to use currently acceptable standardized names, but there is still much debate about such names. In fact, a new listof standardized names will soon be published that will make obsolete anumber of names used in this book. ... Read more

Product Description
In The Quest for Citizenship, Kim Cary Warren examines the formation of African American and Native American citizenship, belonging, and identity in the United States by comparing their educational experiences in Kansas between 1880 and 1935. Warren focuses her study on Kansas, thought by many to be the quintessential free state, not only because it was home to sizable populations of Indian groups and former slaves, but also because of its unique history of conflict over freedom during the antebellum period.

After the Civil War, white reformers opened segregated schools, ultimately reinforcing the very racial hierarchies that they claimed to challenge. To resist the effects of these reformers' actions, African Americans developed strategies that emphasized inclusion and integration, while autonomy and bicultural identities provided the focal point for Native Americans' understanding of what it meant to be an American. Warren argues that these approaches to defining American citizenship served as ideological precursors to the Indian rights and civil rights movements.

This comparative history of two nonwhite races provides a revealing analysis of the intersection of education, social control, and resistance, and the formation and meaning of identity for minority groups in America. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A close study of the educational experience for African Americans and Native Americans in Kansas
University of Kansas assistant professor of history Kim Cary Warren presents The Quest for Citizenship: African American and Native American Education in Kansas, 1880-1935, a close study of the educational experience for African Americans and Native Americans in Kansas during the close of the nineteenth and the first third of the twentieth centuries. Kansas has been chosen as a particular focus point partly because it was home to a significant population of Native Americans and former slaves, and partly because it was mired in the middle of the conflict over slavery prior to and during the Civil War. After the Civil War, white reformers created segregated schools that ultimately supported the status quo. The Quest for Citizenship reveals strategies developed by African Americans that encouraged inclusion and integration, while Native Americans adopted tactics that promoted autonomy and bicultural identity. Warren presents a convincing thesis that these efforts formed the parent ideology the civil rights and Indian rights movements. Also available in a hardcover edition, The Quest for Citizenship is a thoughtful examination of the educational, philosophical, and developmental history of nonwhite peoples in the United States, highly recommended as a worthy addition to college and public library American History shelves.

Product Description
The pungent odor of fermenting cabbage from a Korean neighbor's kimchi pot, an Okinawan gecko scurrying up the quonset hut wall, a call to prayer from a Turkish minaret, or Roman ruins along her route to school each reminded Anita Burdette-Dragoo of one fact: she wasn't in Kansas anymore.

Not in Kansas Anymore relates the endearing story of Anita Burdette-Dragoo, a Kansas farm girl who spent 17 years teaching on U.S. military bases around the world. With a fair amount of wit and a great deal of wisdom, Burdette-Dragoo shares her encounters with non-American neighbors and her civilian impressions of military communities overseas. In addition, she reveals the contrast between her own educational experience in rural Kansas with that of some four million students and their teachers who have attended the Department of Defense Overseas Dependents Schools since the end of World War II.

Burdette-Dragoo also provides a humorous look at the culture shock she experienced while living in the American community. Learning a vocabulary filled with acronyms, preparing to evacuate students in the event of an attack, and seeing soldiers in full battle gear run past her classroom window while loudspeakers blared was all in a day's work!

Not in Kansas Anymore is a wonderfully whimsical glimpse into a little-known aspect of overseas military living as well as a testament to the dedication and bravery of the American teacher. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly interesting look at a unique teaching career
What a truly unique book!Beyond the story itself, which I found very interesting and which completely reinvigorated my own sense of wunderlust, I was most impressed with the way it's organized -- three distinct sections that compare US v. other cultures; civilian v. military life; and teaching challenges in general. The stories in each section really drove home the various challenges that the author faced throughout her career with DDODS.

But the true gem of the book is the wonderful detail included throughout. The stories, even those from many years ago, are told with such clear recollection that it's easy to imagine the scene unfolding before your eyes.Ms. Burdette-Dragoo's attention to detail and her story-telling ability tie the book together.

It really was a joy to read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not in Kansas Anymore
"Not in Kansas Anymore", by Anita Burdette-Dragoo, is a wonderful story of life teaching overseas on U.S. military bases with the Department of Defense Overseas Dependents Schools. The book is easy to read and very well written. As a former DoDDS teacher I thoroughly enjoyed it.It made me laugh and brought back so many memories - from military acronyms, to the culture of the host nation, to the teaching of students whether in quonset huts or in new school buildings.Ms. Burdette-Dragoo also compares teaching in DoDDS to her experience of teaching in the U.S.Congratulations to Ms. Burdette-Dragoo!This was a delightful book to read, and I highly recommend it. ...
