Product Description
Gary, Indiana was founded in 1906 and was part of the US Steel Corporation's plan to build the world's largest steel mill. The city's school system became world-famous as a progressive educational experiment until the 1930s when a changing political and economic climate led to an erosion of the system, which faced a serious overcrowding crisis in the 1950s. Blending social and intellectual history, the author examines the economic, political, and cultural context of the unique educational experience developed in this urban industrial centre. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Fine Piece of History With Implications for Our Times
Seregny has a fine history here, one that discusses the problems of rural education workers, their relationships to peasants, zemstovs, the monarchists, city workers, the church, in the context of the 1905 uprisings. Some teachers, as today, took the side of their rural community's citizens and students, insisting on academic freedom, job rights, and, in a few cases, the potential for revolution for equality and justice. Other school workers, probably most, behaved like "zemstov rabbits," as we see the vast majority of the school workforce acting today in the face of the No Child Left Behind Act and, now, the Race to the Top, a bi-partisan project led by the Obama administration. What Seregny does here, that seems to be out of bounds for nearly all education analysts today, is to connect school and society---as did some heroic rural teachers in 1905. It is a fascinating account that will help anyone interested in not just the 1905 rising, its immediate aftermath, and the 12 years ahead--how that came to be--but also for any educator seeking to see why things are as they are now. Worth your while!

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive source on zemstvo and teacher relations.
Scott Seregny's well-researched monograph is a must for those seeking information on the intricate and important relationship between Russian teachers and zemstvo officials. ... Read more

Product Description
The purpose for this collection of essays is to influence the development of prison education programs and to sway educators and researchers to see the possibilities of working together through consistent, rational public policy for successful rehabilitation. Opening educational opportunities for those people in prison has been proven successful, and yet our society and lawmakers refuse to see the corollary between recidivism rates and education. Without an effective dialogue, we cannot begin to address the problem. The men who have written for this book do so with the hope that they can participate in a national debate about the causes and the effects the prison culture has upon the incarcerated. They hope their experiences with education can speak for the hundreds of thousands of other prisoners who do not have access to a public forum, who are intimidated into silence by the prison machinery, who are not literate enough to express themselves. They hope that their offerings here can, in some small way, contribute to reducing the suffering and frustration that hamper the rehabilitation of others in the system and to educate the public community about the prison culture of America. ...
