Product Description
The greatest complexity of the immune response is shown by vertebrates which are endowed with innate and acquired immunity. Immunological studies performed mostly in mammals have been the reference for studies in other vertebrates. The study of immunological fish defenses has advanced considerably in recent decades. This has been due to the key status of fish in terms of the evolution of acquired immunity and due to the rapid expansion of aquaculture over this period, wherein disease control is of prime concern. Most of the chapters not only review the current advances on fish immune defenses, but also show perspective for future research. The book will be of interest to scientists involved in fish immunology, fisheries and aquaculture as well as for students of fish biology. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Based on the assumption that invertebrates as well as vertebrates possess factors regulating hematopoiesis, response to infection or wounding, studies dealing with the evolution of immunity have focused on the isolation and characterization of putative cytokine-related molecules from invertebrates. Until recently, most of our knowledge of cytokine- and cytokine receptor-like molecules in invertebrates has relied on functional assays and similarities at the physicochemical level. As such, a phylogenetic relationship between invertebrate cytokine-like molecules and invertebrate counterparts could not be convincingly demonstrated. In the present book, recent studies demonstrating cytokine-like activities and related signaling pathways in invertebrates are critically reviewed, focusing on findings from molecular biology and taking advantage of the completion of the genome from the fly Drosophila and the worm Caenorhabditis elegans. ... Product Description
Neutrophils are autonomous cells, freely living within humans (and other mammals), which are responsible for combating infection by microbes. They are also responsible for causing damage to the host in inflammatory disease. Understanding how these cells interpret the environment and decide on an appropriate course of action is therefore vital for understanding both physiological and pathological inflammation. This report provides an overview of the intracellular signalling events within neutrophils which regulate their activity, including oxidase activation and "priming". ... Read more

The text elucidates fundamental concepts, such as the origin of the immune system, innate and acquired immunity, and cells and organs of the immune system. It discusses recent concepts and ideas regarding innate and acquired immunity, T-cell and B-cell activation and differentiation mechanisms, factors involved in rheumatoid arthritis, T-cell clonal anergy, NK cell receptors, strategies in production of new vaccines against pathogens, new information on the minor histocompatibility complex, and much more. Moreover, the author brings you up to date with the latest developments by reviewing recently proposed concepts on transplantation immunology, blocking of costimulatory signals, CTLA-4 mediated T-cell inhibition, immune tolerance, NK cell tolerance, HLA delivered peptides for immunosuppression, and tumor antigens coded by oncogens.

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressed
I bought this as a supplement to my Microbiology class and the textbook that was required for the class. This book definitely clarifies things and conveniently organizes the material well. I read this and reference this more than my GIANT textbook! I am very satisfied with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book!
Put it this way. I finished med-school, Internal Medicine residency and have been a hospitalist for three years. I'm going back to training in Infectious Diseases for a fellowship. I have been through bunch of books in my life and can say that this one is a darn good review of Microbiology. The proper topics have in depth review, but it is not too meticulous that you would get lost in bench research type topics. I'm certainly speaking from a clinicians perspective with ID intentions, but in general I have quite an interest in microbiology. I generally recommend it for sure. Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars very good
This purchase is very smoothly and the quality of the book is pretty good! Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Microbiology and Immunology Book
I bought this book for my microbiology course and for review for the boards. Before this book, I read Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple. While Ridiculous was an entertaining read, but the silliness kinda got in the way of information and the explanations were generally lacking. This book is well organized and the depth is great.I finally figured out what the A and B subunits on the cholera exotoxin are and the fact that that mechanism is not exclusive to cholera. The immunology chapters in the book are equally as good.Ever have any questions about complement or hypersensitivities?Well there is a chapter dedicated to each (albeit, only 3-5 pages). Finally the appendix is very high yield. There are charts that organize organisms by geographic region, foods for food poisoning, animals, and vectors. There is also a section that has a quick review of all the organisms covered in the book. There's a lot of information, so it might take longer to get through than a rapid review book, but started earlier it should be high yield.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for what it is
This is a very good medical micro book for someone who needs a reasonable complete and accessible reference. It's not a definitive micro book. It's not "Clinical Microbiology made ridiculously simple" either.I find micro really painful as a general rule.I'd never sit down and read this book from cover to cover. That said when I need to know about a particular bug this book generally tells me everything I'd want to know in an organized and understandable fashion. ... Product Description
The molecular structure of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and that of its receptor subunits provide a basis for understanding lymphocyte activation by IL-2 and the generation of effector cells capable of mediating cytotoxicity towards tumors. This book provides an up-to-date account of IL-2, its effect on lymphocyte function, and clinical applications. Internationally know experts review the molecular aspects of cell signalling, giving insight on the in vivo pathways of activation likely to be important in determining clinical responses. They also examine the use of cytokines, particularly IL-2, in the treatment of cancer, and describe the results of recent clinical trials using IL-2, as well as of adoptive cell therapy.Providing a clear account of recent progress, the book also reviews the problems involved in attempting to improve the therapeutic benefit of IL-2, along with the importance of mechanisms which subverse IL-2 responses. This is the most up-to-date account of molecular research and clinical trials in this area, and will be of great benefit to students and researchers in immunology, pharmacology, biochemistry, and oncology who are interested in this vitally important topic. ... The aim of this book is to describe and discuss the preparation of immuno-gold probes, the progress and development of preparation methods suitable for immuno-electron microscopy, and the use of immuno-gold labeling at the microscopic level. The perspectives and limitations of the different methods used in combination with immuno-gold are evaluated not only in the methodology chapters, but also in the chapters where the validity of immuno-gold labeling is exemplified in a successful application to biological questions. In addition to examining cryosections as one of the most common preparation methods for immuno-electron microscopy, an alternative embedding method, such as freeze substitution of rapidly frozen samples, and replica methods, such as freeze-etching, fracture label, label fracture, and whole mount, are discussed in detail. This book is an excellent source for cell biologists, researchers, technicians, and students. ... Read more
