Product Description
When two gutsy moms ventured inside Nettelhorst, their neighborhood's underutilized and struggling public elementary school, the new principal asked what it would take for them to enroll their children. Stunned by her candor, they returned the next day armed with an extensive wish list. The principal read their list and said "Well, let's get started, girls! It's going to be a busy year . . . "

How to Walk to School is the story--from the highs to the lows--of motivated neighborhood parents galvanizing and then organizing an entire community to take a leap of faith, transforming a challenged urban school into one of Chicago's best, virtually overnight.

The fate of public education is not beyond our control. In How to Walk to School, Susan Kurland, Nettelhorst's new and entrepreneurial principal, and Jacqueline Edelberg, the neighborhood mom, provide an accessible and honest blueprint for reclaiming the great public schools our children deserve. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Generations of Citizens Concern for Public Schools
When I think about the dedication that Susan Kurland and Jacqueline Edelberg made for public schools it reminded me of my mother and her friends that faced the same challenges when I was growing up in the 50's in St. Louis. Then as now public schools were left behind and was more disturbing was that instituions did not have goals or visions as to how to make their schools better. As a result of Susan and Jacqueline making the time and effort to record their experiences it has given many other citizens and communities the inspiration as to how to make their public schools better and serve the needs of their families, children and community. When you read of the details of the experiences of Susan and Jacqueline these people will relate it to their own challenges to make their schools a wonderful place for their children to grow up.

Six years ago I moved to a neighborhood in Lakeview not far from Nettlehorst with a small CPS grade school down the street. It is a beautiful old building, but every afternoon at 1:30 pm the buses drove up and wisked the children away and the school empty and abandoned and on the weekends it remained shut up.Finally a local school council made an appeal and with the help of a new principal the building came alive and is now a focal point for children and families around the neighborhood.I think that now they have benefited from my mother as well as Jacqueline and Susan who I am sure know the strides this has made.I only hope my mother is looking down to see my street, the school and the happy children playing once again on the school play ground.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Walk to School
As a past educator in Spanish Harlam, NY and Fort Apache in the BX,
I have embraced this book and know the full merit of its care and
dedication to the children. I admire the pro-active approach of
community and school. They have made a success to reclaim education
for the children. I wish I had been part of that process.

What has been accomplished has not been easy.Reaching out, making
a difference calls for dedication beyond the school hours. While the
book is not a blueprint for all; it is a "foot print" to lead others
step by step to find their own change, make community schools powerful,
enrich and prove the spirit of true education.

Yes, a must read that inspires and provides a beacon of light when too
many educators have become numb to the process of pitching in and
doing more, doing what an educator should do and parents not taking
the time to help their children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration for all schools
As a Chicago native (and product of one of CPS' selected enrollment high schools), I thought this book provided an awesome perspective on a comprehensive, grassroots school reform effort. The Nettlehorst transformation is constantly referenced in meetings that I attend to this day.

This book is a must read for anyone interested in making a difference in K-12 education

5-0 out of 5 stars Great advice on how to improve a neighborhood school
This book was a great example of how a group of committed parents and community members came together to support the hard work of their neighborhood school faculty and administration and co-constructed an outstanding learning environment for all students.Congratulations to Nettelhorst - the community, parents, students, faculty and administration - on a job well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, it can be done
As someone who witnessed the Nettelhorst transformation closely, this book is a must read for any parents who are unhappy with their child's school. It offers a blueprint on how to create the change you want.

Edelberg documents how she worked with Principal Susan Kurland to orchestrate a revamp of a school that otherwise would still be ignored by neighborhood families. Instead, there's a waiting list to get in. And why not? Today, Nettelhorst is this bright happy place where children learn surrounded by colorful art-filled walls and smiling teachers.

It's also a vibrant community gathering place -- after school where parents visit with one another in the courtyard. And on Saturday mornings when the French Market serves as the neighborhood town square.

Was it easy, this revamp? No way. It really did take a village with a focused, determined parent at the helm. But for those who want change in their own neighborhood schools, this is a book that must be read.
