Extractions: As today's job market becomes more and more competitive, there is a bright side. The job market is also becoming more and more diverse, with new opportunities for students majoring in nearly every discipline. This is especially true for geography. While it may be frustrating that only the Census Bureau and a handful of other agencies have specific job listings for "geographers," the variety of employment opportunities for geography students has rarely been better. There is certainly a need for gifted geography teachers at all levels, but there are now so many more options in geography. Perhaps the most promising areas currently are in GIS, urban and regional planning, business geographics, and environmental management. Nevertheless, to land a job in most fields, the geography student will need to obtain some experience as an undergraduate. The best way to do this is through an internship, whether paid or voluntary. Geography-related internships are plentiful, and VU geography majors have landed some excellent positions in recent years. You can also earn academic credit towards your geography major or minor by doing an internship, either during the school-year or during the summer. Great, so how do I get one?

Extractions: The Department of Geography, Geology and Anthropology at Indiana State University is well known for quality graduate educational experiences that combine the geographic techniques (remote sensing, GIS, quantitative methods) with aspects of physical geography. ISURSL, the Indiana State University Remote Sensing Laboratory, is a major teaching and research facility housed with the Department of Geography, Geology and Anthropology. The majority of graduate students in climatology combine techniques courses with their advanced course work or seminars in physical geography and climatology. The M.A. degree program requires 32 graduate hours and the Ph.D. program requires 65 hours of post-baccalaureate course work prior to the 18 dissertation hours. In general, a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0) scale) is required for admission. Foreign students must score above 550 on the TOEFL. GRE exam scores are necessary for assistantship funding.

Yet, linkages between disciplines in the curriculum increasingly are being made, such as the connections of English to U.S. History courses in many high schools. Another connection may be English with World Geography courses. Students of every ability level could benefit from exploring the interrelationship between these two disciplines. In this ERIC Digest, the term literature refers to novels, short stories, poetry, plays, and folk tales. It consists of narrative as opposed to expository forms of writing that are found in traditional textbooks, reference books, and news articles. By no means, however, should literature be the sole tool used to teach geography or other subjects of the social studies. Rather, each form of narrative and expository writing has its place in the social studies curriculum.
