5-0 out of 5 stars Improving Your Field Hockey Game
I purchased this book for my Granddaughter (Age16) who is exceptionally good at the sport. While still in the 10th grade, she was elevated directly to her High School's Varsity. When she entered the 11th grade, she became Co-Captain, although not a Senior. She has told me that the book was a great help, and that even with her current knowledge, she has picked up pointers that have helped her improve her game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for coaches and players
I played field hockey about 9 years ago and recently my arm has been slightly twisted to coach middle school hockey.I had forgotten all the basics of the game and this book is a quick to the point guide.I like the pictures it provides and the drills. My goalie coach who had never even seen a game before has been able to use the book and apply it to coaching my goalies.I definitly recommend this book whether you are a coach who is looking for a break down of skills or a player looking to improve your game.

5-0 out of 5 stars it gave me an edge on my playing
it gave me the winning touch!!!!! I want to reccomend this book for every field hockey player in the world! ... Read more

Product Description
Score more goals and shut out your opponent! In Field Hockey Techniques & Tactics, Olympic gold medalist Claire Mitchell-Taverner presents the skills and offensive and defensive systems that helped the Hockeyroos dominate the world stage for nearly a decade and revolutionize the game of field hockey.

Elevate your trapping, receiving, passing, dribbling, and shooting by learning the finer technical points of each attacking skill. Perfect your defensive techniques in anticipating opponents' moves and intercepting passes, making strong tackles, and creating eliminations to regain possession and set up additional attacks. And gain firsthand insights for the communicating and decision making required for excelling as a team.

Citing the aggressive attacking and defensive moves that the Hockeyroos used to win gold at every major international tournament over a 9-year span, Mitchell-Taverner places emphasis on applying the press, using man-to-man marking, and zoning up. She also teaches the keys to setting up breakaways and 2-on-1s; maintaining possession of the ball; and executing set plays like penalty corners, free hits outside the circle, and long corners.

Higher-level skill development and savvier play are a winning combination against tough competition. Use Field Hockey Techniques & Tactics to boost your performance and expand your knowledge of the game. ... Read more

Product Description
Women began to play organized field hockey - which was originally developed as a men's game in Britain in the 1800s - in the late 19th century, overcoming demonstrations, name-calling, and other unpleasant challenges to organize their own association. Today, field hockey is one of the top five sports played by female high school students, and of the 100,000 field hockey players in the United States, 98 percent of them are girls under the age of 21. Winning Field Hockey for Girls is the only easy-to-use guide to the sport written specifically for the people who play the game and their coaches. Like other titles in the Winning Sports for Girls series, Winning Field Hockey for Girls offers chapter-by-chapter coverage of all aspects of the game, including rules, equipment, key skills, playing strategies, and more. Tips from members of the U.S. national team and scholastic and collegiate coaches help players and coaches develop a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of the game, and approximately 85 photographs and more than 25 diagrams illustrate plays, positions, and drills. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Next to Useless
This is not a book, just a laminated, folding pamphlet. The title does indicate it is a "Basic" guide, but being new to field hockey, I assumed it would still be helpful. What a joke. The basic information includes such facts as (1) The players wear uniforms and use a stick and ball (2) The object of the game is to score goals and the team that scores the most goals wins and (3) the refs make calls. It has a section titled "Common referee signals", but does not illustrate the signals nor describe them! Don't waste your time on this next to useless "book".

2-0 out of 5 stars Informative, if skimpy
I bought this for my mother, who comes to watch all my games. I was a little disappointed because it isn't as substantive as it looks on Amazon. It does still have a clear lay out of the field and basic information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Starting from scratch

Overall, I was diappointed with this book. The
main focus was on drills and I wasn't aware
of it.The drills in it are great. They have
many drills for each individual skill.
However, the text wasn't that good.It seems
like it was written from an ice hockey
player's view point.There was little
consideration for the difference between
roller and ice hockey. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start
This book is good for people who are learning the basics or for FH parents who nod along while other parents are discussing the game :).It provides helpful information about plays, gear, the field, positions, etc.I started playing field hockey last year and for the first season I didn't have an idea what was going on!If you're planning on trying out for a team for the first time and don't want to look like an idiot this book is good for you. However when I read this book I had been playing for a year so I knew almost everything it had in it.The layout of this book isn't anything special and the pictures are black and white and not very clear. This book is a good information guide to knowing the sport, but if you want to get good at field hockey I would pick up a book on FH drills and a stick.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book helped me to get on the varsity field hockey team!
At the beginning of the summer, I had no idea how to play field hockey but I knew that I was going to be trying out for the team. So I bought this book. I highly recomend this book to anyone who wants to learn about this sport. ... Read more
