Product Description
The beauty of plants and their sexuality

The notion of plant sexuality was initiated by Swedish botanist and physician Carl Linnaeus (1707 1778). Working with his collection of over 20,000 specimens, Linnaeus grouped flowers and plants in a Calendarium Florae, and systematically classified plant species by the number and arrangement of their reproductive parts, drawing direct parallels with human sexual organs. Highly controversial at the time, the assertion that a plant s stamens and pistils mirror human genitalia resulted in a 'sexual revolution' in plant taxonomy.

Swedish photographer Edvard Koinberg creates a modern visual counterpart to Linnaeus s work, approaching the subject with equal passion and dedication. Having cultivated several hundred plants in his country house, Koinberg photographs each delicate bloom in his studio under perfect lighting conditions, depicting the life cycle of various flora as they bud, flourish and wane, resulting in a modern Calendarium Florae, a visual calendar that charts the year through flowers.

In Herbarium Amoris, Koinberg captures the lyricism and refulgent eroticism of the floral world in vivid close-ups, shot against dark backgrounds, the dew glittering on outspread petals, the most delicate of vegetal forms infused with unbridled life force. ... Read more

As it is a Taschen publisher the quality of the hard back is apparent. It is a large book and the pictures of the flowers are enlarged to a black background. There are many varied flowers, showing a detail study and the photographs reveal the beauty of the plants. The colours of the flowers are amazing. They are close up, from different angles and enlarged photographs of flowers. It is a charming book and well produced.Good value for your money. ... Read more

Product Description

In a letter from 1845, the 14-year-old Emily Dickinson asked her friend Abiah Root if she had started collecting flowers and plants for a herbarium: "it would be such a treasure to you; 'most all the girls are making one." Emily's own album of more than 400 pressed flowers and plants, carefully preserved, has long been a treasure of Harvard's Houghton Library. This beautifully produced, slipcased volume now makes it available to all readers interested in the life and writings of Emily Dickinson.

The care that Emily put into her herbarium, as Richard Sewall points out, goes far beyond what one might expect of a botany student her age: "Take Emily's herbarium far enough, and you have her." The close observation of nature was a lifelong passion, and Emily used her garden flowers as emblems in her poetry and her correspondence. Each page of the album is reproduced in full color at full size, accompanied by a transcription of Dickinson's handwritten labels. Introduced by a substantial literary and biographical essay, and including a complete botanical catalog and index, this volume will delight scholars, gardeners, and all readers of Emily Dickinson's poetry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Book
Harvard University has preserved the artistically beautiful collection of plants made by Emily Dickinson as a young teenager, but had not allowed anyone to see it because it is so fragile. They decided to have it photographed in color once and have published this gorgeous, full scale facsimile, so that all those interested in her poetry, which relied heavily on botanical references, can now see a treasure previously completely unavailable.I collect rare books and this publication, just as a book, outside of the great interest of its contents, is among the most impressive and beautiful books published recently in the less than $1,000. range. Its availability has already stimulated other books on her as a gardener and amateur botanist.

4-0 out of 5 stars Emily Dickinson's Herbarium
I enjoyed this book very much.It was a thrill to see Emily Dickinson's own handwriting and all the flowers she collected at such a young age. I especially enjoyed seeing the Fringed Gentians and thinking about the poems she wrote about them at a later age.

I was somewhat disappointed in the text. The authors didn't spend much time editing it and making it cohesive. The science section in particular could have had a more detailed description of the wetland prairie habitat in which Emily Dickinson collected the plants.

Overall, I was very pleased with the book.It was beautifully photographed. To describe it as a coffee table book would hardly do it justice.I have lived on a prairie for many years and have seen many of the wildflowers Emily Dickinson has in her "Herbarium".Seeing "Emily Dickinson's Herbarium" has certainly left me with a feeling of intimacy with the poet and her poetry.

Product Description

This landmark volume contains the most complete listing and presentation of the plant specimens collected by the Lewis and Clark expedition. All but one of the plants were collected by Meriwether Lewis, the expedition’s botanist. The collection, how-ever, was nearly lost over the years when it was scattered among various botanists who intended to catalog the expedition’s scientific discoveries. Fortunately, for many years the specimens have been in the care of major institutions, principally the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. The 239 extant items are brought together in one book for the first time. This indispensable volume will assist researchers and enthusiasts hoping to identify each plant’s date and place of collection and other information such as plant habitat and ethnobotanical use.

Product Description
Manel Armengol began his career as a freelance journalist in early-1970s Spain, and by the 80s he had evolved into an important photojournalist, responsible for some of the most iconic images of the country's political upheaval during those tumultuous transitional years--until a severe accident truncated his brief journalistic career in its prime. This beautifully produced clothbound volume presents an exploration of Armengol's postjournalistic oeuvre of the past two decades, with a focus on one of his most ambitious series. Herbarium (2004) is a suite of beautifully-crafted, closely-cropped photographs of 118 plants, 88 of which are reproduced here. Essayist Margaret Hooks writes, "Armengol's intent in creating Herbarium was to use the camera to rescue seemingly simple plants from anonymity and show their serene beauty. His Herbarium does much more than that. In these photographs a metamorphosis takes place whereby the image of an unpretentious herb is transmuted. The commonplace becomes profound and mysterious, transformed into a banquet for the eyes. Vibrating with energy, leaves and tendrils swirl and curl in a gothic flamboyance, plump pistils perforate the air with sensuality; flower heads hang delicately on radiant stalks as the artist's vision enables us to see them in their sublime splendor." ...
