Sophie and her brother are excited by the arrival of Hanukkah, and they happily clean the cottage and shine the Menorah as their gift to the family. But when their mother shares her worry that they do not have enough cooking oil to last eight days, their father tells them the story behind the holiday celebration and the miracle of the oil.Inspired by the story, the family creates its own Miracle Jar and watches the oil disappear as they enjoy the special food that each day brings. The family's hope and faith is confirmed when a last wipe of the cloth produces enough oil to prepare the eight day's treat. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Hanukah Books
This was a very good book for anyone who wants to know the background of Hanukah.I found this to be informative for both myself and the children I taught in Sunday School.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Miracle Jar
This story takes us back to the shtetl, where family finances are difficult and tasks that children can do are as valued as gifts that cost money. The setting is the home where a young family is preparing for the holiday of Hannukah. The book takes place during winter, where logs in the fireplace and in the stove are the source of warmth as well as the center for cooking. Colorful watercolor drawings accompany the retelling of the historical Hannukkah story. The children sweep the house and polish the brass Hannukkiah as their contributions to the holiday. The mother here, however, has a problem that parallels the story of the ancient Maccabee victory. It is not possible to go to the store because of the weather, and she is running very low on oil. Her hope is that through some miracle she will have enough cooking oil to make the family its traditional holiday treats for the entire eight days. She is able to save oil left from her cooking each day in what the family labels "the miracle jar". For seven days she is able to achieve her goal, but there is no oil left for the eighth day. Through her ingenuity, she is able to delight her family and give them the eighth day treat. The family members' love for one another and the colorful illustrations are important attributes of the book. However, the eighth day miracle is underwhelming, and as a result the climax of the book is disappointing. In addition, for some reason, the editor allowed the inclusion of the following puzzling statement explaining the reason for Hanukkah gelt: "These coins are to remind us that after Maccabee became an independent state, they proudly minted their own coins instead of using those of the Syrians." Product Description
Though it's the first night of Hanukkah, Rachel's family won't really be celebrating until next week. But Rachel wants to celebrate now, so she comes up with a good idea: while her parents do errands, she'll visit her neighbor, Mrs. Greenberg, and they can make latkes together. The two head into Mrs. Greenberg's shiny, tidy kitchen and begin grating the potatoes. But Rachel's gratings slide off the table and onto the floor. Before long, Rachel has dropped an egg, spilled the flour, and dribbled the oil. Mrs. Greenberg is exhausted, Rachel's mom and dad are horrified, and Rachel is afraid she's ruined a friendship by making this terrible mess. She is relieved and delighted to find that Mrs. Greenberg thinks it's a wonderful mess--her house hasn't felt so lived-in in years! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice book, layout could use some work
Season's Greetings is a cookbook for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. It has classics from Roast Turkey and Gravy to fruitcake. It also has unique recipes such as Cranberry Cream Pie, Thai-Inspired Turkey salad to Banana Chocolate Chip Scones. So far I've made the Peach fruitcake and found it quite divine.

I didn't care for this book's layout. Recipes are placed in 3 descending columns, and are slightly difficult to read. I also would prefer more pictures of the various dishes, and at times the recipes didn't seem to fit the particular holiday or seemed rather generic.

Overall, though this was a good book, well worth picking up for the Fruitcake recipe alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent as are all her books!
Not only do I now have all of Marlene Sorosky's books, but I took cooking classes from her for several years prior to her writing. Her main objective was to do ahead so as to enjoy time spent with guests.Accomplished!Marlene Sorosky's Cookery for Entertaining

5-0 out of 5 stars cook book review
I have owned this Holiday cookbook for at least 10 years
and it's fantastic.I am now buying a copy for my parents
'cause they are hooked on a couple of recipes and want their own copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Food for lady who has no time to cook
I bought this book on sale due to the food pictures in thebook.A person who love cooking usually can tell if the author isgood by looking at the pictures of the final product. What attracted me to get this book was her recipe for pick up drumsticks. That is the most simple recipe I had seen for baking up drumpsticks that looked like they were fried.Other ideas in the book are also great and time saving. Our church always having special holiday dinner or special dinner gets together for rivival meeting nights, etc.It is so hard to finds people who are willing to cook for such large audience. This is a life saver for ladies who are in charge of the food for those special occasion, even for a Chinese church.I had already shared some of the recipes with friends at church and they just can't wait to try them out (This also include busy guys who help their wives out with cooking).I highly recommend you to get a copy of this book.END

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific recipes for holiday and party entertaining.
I immediately went out and purchased this book after attending a party in which the hostess presented a beautiful and tasty appetizer buffet using eight different recipes from Season's Greetings. The recipes are all eye appealing, delicious and in most cases easy to make. Recipes also include make-ahead tips. I highly recommend it for the beginner as well as the seasoned hostess. ... One of the things I liked best about this book is that every photograph doesn't reflect perfection. The picture of the shortbread includes one cracked piece. The fudge isn't all cut into perfect squares. I also like that the recipes are for the most part from scratch so the child is learning some actual cooking skills.

There is a solid index in the back of the book to help locate any recipe, along with a conversion chart for weights and measures so translation from American into Metric or Imperial is handy. I prepared the Coconut Ice candy and it was both easy and delicious. This book would make a great gift for a family, or any child that expressed an interest in cooking or baking.

1-0 out of 5 stars Paperback version not same as hardcover
I had this book pre-ordered and it arrived today.Boy was I disappointed. This is not what I was expecting.

Last year I saw the hardcover version of this book at a brick and mortar store but never bought it since it was Christmas time and I had other things to spend my money on than the book.I did, however, take a picture of the cover with my cell phone to remind me to look for it again sometime.
