Accessible science writing
This book is a collection of case studies, each of which examines how how specific invertebrates suffer from specific illnesses; essentially how certain bugs get infected by smaller bugs.Each chapter then shows how that specific case study is applicable to humans and human society.The "big fleas" include molluscs, honeybees, crabs, silkworms, and mosquitoes.The smaller fleas include various types of fungi, bacteeria, viruses, and multicellular life-forms such as nematodes.The case studies span the entire globe, and stretch back a thousand years.Each chapter is self-contained and can be read on its own, but they all share the same theme, and occasionally cite examples in other chapters.The text requires an elementary knowledge of biology, such as knowing the difference between DNA and RNA, what is an invertebrate, what is an immune system, etc...Overall, this is quite an interesting book.

Holds valuable lessons for college-level health sciences students as well.
Big Fleas Have Little Fleas: How Discoveries of Invertebrate Diseases are Advancing Modern Science makes a case for the history of insect-microbial interactions, offering up stories from around the world to trace these interactions and their impact on public health. Meh.
This book is very similar in theme to The Napping House. As such, I can't help but compare the two. And when I do, this one is definitely the loser.

It's not really such a bad book, I guess. The repetitive rhymes are a little long. There are a few non sequiturs - the sneeze wakes them up, and then the bat is baffled so his eyes turn blue? It reminds the frog of his old nephew? (Worse, this is clearly just to fit the -oo rhyme scheme, meaning you have to say "old nephEW" with the stress on the last syllable.) In some books this randomness is quirky and fun. In this one, it just hits me as weird and nonsensical.

Fun! Great for 2-4 year-olds
This has been a favorite of both of my boys (when they were between the ages of 2 and 4).And it's a fun one for me to read aloud.The artwork is charming, the story is simple enough to follow, and it's fun! A great book.

It also added the words "tumble-down" to my kids' vocabulary which sort of struck me as funny coming from pre-schoolers - but again, fun!

We LOVE it!
I have loved this for years, but I am now getting to share it with my 1-year-old.The illustrations are darling and the story is nice and rhythmic.I saw that it was compared to The Napping House in another review.We much prefer the Flea's Sneeze...in fact, my book-loving daughter won't listen to more than one page of the nappinng house, and she wants to read this book over and over. I'm online right now, looking for more books by this author!

Forced Rhymes but Great Pictures
A funny little tale about a flea that creates and uproar in a barn. Younger children will really get into the repetitive text and the illustrations are really wonderful. The story itself is funny enough, if a little subtle.

However, the rhymes here are sometimes a little bizarre. It seems to me that if the author couldn't think of something for the bat to do besides have his "eyes turned blue," then maybe the bat didn't need to be in the barn. That goes double for the frog. While other animals cry, "Boo Hoo," or "Eww!" or (duh), "Moo! Moo!" what is the reaction of the frog? He is "reminded... of his old nephew." What?

In any case, it is a cute enough story and your toddler will care a lot less than you will about the textual oddities, and will really enjoy the menagerie depicted on the pages.

The Napping House
This is a cute book...not close to the book it is clearly modeled on, "The Napping House" by Audrey & Don Wood, but cute.

If you're looking for a classic, a keeper, a book that you and your kids will love (and recite!) for years to come, get "The Napping House"...Speaking from experience...It lives in our car, comes out at doctor's appointments, long waits at restaurants, during long drives, or is brought inside for cozy bedtime reading.Sometimes we recite it just for fun (yes, we are nerds).We find the Napping House in pictures, remember the Grandma who broke the bed (or the cat who clawed the dog!), see a rainbow and think of the book.

However, if you're looking for a cute book, a book you'll read with enjoyment but that will not live with you or touch you, a book that you'll give away when your kids have outgrown it, "The Flea's Sneeze" is fine. ... Read more

Pickles and tea biscuits!
In this colorful book, kids will delight in the tale of the pure, if someone what unlikely, friendship that develops between an old, lonely man and the house-trained flea he purchases from a petshop ("teeny tiny litter tray" and everything).The classic theme of friendships that break the usual mold is revitalized in this story by Mary Elizabeth Hanson with quirky and emotion-filled illustrations by David Webber Merrell.

While the old man is enjoying taking his tiny little friend to the movies, the beach and even a whale-watching cruise,the ever-skepital townspeople begin to whisper among themselves."He's knotted his noodle."It's true that they mean well, butit seems that the townspeople would feel a bit more comfortable if they could actually see the pal the old man is chatting with.

This is a fun, fun book with a strong message about friendship that your kids will want you to read over and over.You'll gladly oblige.

A Book for Children of ALL Ages
Amazon is making a serious mistake in classifying this marvelous book a children's book. I will be 70 on my next birthday, and I fell in love with this book and bought it (full price) while visiting Taos, NM. I plan to share it with my grown children. The charm of this book lies in the inseperability of its wacky tale and fabulous illustrations. I predict that this combination of Mary Elizabeth Hanson and David Webber Merrell will take its place alongside Lewis Carroll and Sir John Tenniel.

A feel good picture book for all ages!
The title of this "little gem of a story" is what captured my interest, but the illustrations by David Webber Merrell stole my heart.Gentle lessons and laugh out loud illustrations are a wonderful combination to this feel good picture book.A lonely old man finds friendship and companionship in a most unlikley pet...and she is a lovely shade of purple with a saucy yellow bow on her head.This is one story you will want to read to yourself after you have read it to the children or grandchilden.

Great Book!
We have a huge library of children's books for my two boys ages 2 years and 10 months, and this is an all time favorite! It has a great rhyming story and the illustrations are hysterical.....My older son asks for it almost every night as his bed time story.....a really wonderful book!

Delightful tale for the curious child and adult alike . . .
Ms. Shreeve's book is a wonderful and imaginative tale about the adventures of a wumblebug. In this delightful story, the wumblebug learns about his neighbors and matures through his experiences. Whereas some books for children are boring for the parents, this book is equally entertaining as a charming story for children and a fable for adults. Highly recommended.

We love Hector!!
We love Hector the wumblebug!This is a fun story that really paints a great picture of what it would be like to be a bug!The author puts a lot of the natural world into the story so you learn about real bugs that live with the imaginary wumblebug.My kid loved this and the other book "Hector finds a Fortune" - we hope there are more Hector adventures to come.A good read aloud or early reader.We did both in my house
