Product Description
This is a handbook of practical techniques for making the best possible interpretation of geological structures at the map scale and for extracting the maximum amount of information from surface and subsurface maps. The 3D structure is defined by internally consistent structure contour maps and cross sections of all horizons and faults. The book is directed toward the professional user who is concerned about both the accuracy of an interpretation and the speed with which it can be obtained from incomplete data. Quantitative methods are emphasized throughout, and numerous analytical solutions are given that can be easily implemented with a pocket calculator or a spreadsheet. Interpretation strategies are defined for GIS or CAD users, yet are simple enough to be done by hand. The user of this book will be able to produce better geological maps and cross sections, judge the quality of existing maps, and locate and fix mapping errors. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Text on 3-D Geological Structures
This is probably the best available text on three-dimensional representation of geological structures. It is a handbook for use by professionals but would also serve as a supplemental text for structuralgeology or workstation courses.

The content is logically organized, well focused, clearly written and complete. The topics begin with thebasics. These include classification, description and analysis ofstructures.More advanced topics follow. They range from dynamicinteraction between structural and sedimentary events to fluid movementsand to restoration. The worked examples are simple and clearly make theirrespective points. The exercises range from rudimentary to somewhatchallenging for the first-time student of structural geology. Many topicswould be new to anyone who has not kept current with advances in structuralgeology. These include, among others, new techniques in dip sequenceanalysis and calculating area-depth relations.

Modern technology in theform of workstations permits geoscientists to produce spectacular graphicsdepicting geological structures and their development.A common complaintof energy company managers is that the interpretive graphics look so goodthat they are believable simply because of the presentation.Whenfinancial decisions such as drilling are made based on thoseinterpretations they often are found to be incorrect.Workstationinterpreters could significantly improve the quality of their structuralinterpretations if they master the content of Dr. Groshong's book. Moreover, as visualization becomes an important trend to the future ofinterpretation technology, the basic science represented by this book takeson a more important and timely meaning.

The price of the book may seem tobe excessive. This is especially evident when compared with texts preparedby non-profit organizations such as the American Association of PetroleumGeologists. Those books are more attractive because they use color and areprinted on better quality paper. This book has no color and is printed onordinary quality paper. However, if the price of the book is compared withsimilar books published by for-profit book houses, the price iscompetitive. In the final analysis, the content of the text and quality ofthe writing more than justify its purchase.

I recommend this text toall interested in the study and practice of structural geology, especiallyinterpreters using workstation or visualization technology. ... Read more

Product Description
The San Andreas Fault is the most famous fault on Earth, running nearly the entire length of western California from just north of the Mexican border to the Mendocino coast. It is a very active tectonic boundary which directly affects the lives of more than twenty million people. The San Andreas Fault has been responsible for shaping much that is beautiful about California, and it also has the capacity to destroy the communities that lie along its course. A Land in Motion provides a geologic tour of the San Andreas Fault in an accessible narrative punctuated with dramatic color illustrations, lively anecdotes, and authoritative information about earthquakes. As he tours the length of the fault, Michael Collier provides a valuable overview of plate tectonics and gives a geologic history of the San Andreas Fault written for non-scientists. He discusses the evolution of seismology as a science and traces the knowledge that scientists have gleaned about earthquakes and plate tectonics from their work on the San Andreas Fault. Collier looks into human history as well, discussing major earthquakes that have hit the San Andreas, including the famous San Francisco earthquake of 1906, the San Fernando quake of 1971, the Loma Prieta quake of 1989, the Landers quake of 1992, and many lesser temblors.Collier illustrates his text with magnificent photographs that highlight some of the most beloved landscapes in California. He provides excellent views of the fault throughout the stateof Crystal Springs reservoir near San Francisco, of Pinnacles National Monument east of Monterey, of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and Point Reyes National Seashore near San Francisco, and more.Collier concludes his tour of the San Andreas Fault with a provocative discussion on earthquake prediction versus earthquake planning that all Californiansand all who live where earthquakes occurwill want to read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well done!
A GREAT illustrated discussion of the San Andreas fault [and allies] by a master storyteller and photographer. [Declaration: Michael is a former student]

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb book about an awesome phenomenon
The San Andreas Fault traverses much of California from the Mexican border to far in the north. Those who have never seen it sometimes picture this tectonic feature as a lurking menace ready to swallow whole towns at a second's whim. This highly accurate book dispels such misimpressions and passes along a good deal of valid scientific information in an interesting, understandable way.

The book shows in colored diagrams and easily read narrative how plate tectonics has worked to create this piece of California that is moving inexorably northwest. The writers clearly explain how and why earthquake-producing stresses build up in and along the fault.Brief, but spectacular, histories show what happens when these stresses are released.

The book is exceptional in that it discusses rather esoteric scientific concepts in a non-patronizing way.The text is neither dry, nor overly simplistic.Any person with a limited scientific background and a high school education can grasp the concepts being examined.

The photographs of such things as offset streams, scarps, trees with interrupted growth, and sag ponds are carefully selected, and beautifully crafted. These follow the text well, avoiding the liability of having to probe through the book to match the picture with the explanation. They will call you to come to California.

Two excellent features are discussion segments with geologists who work on solving the fault's mysteries, and a section on parklands in which San Andreas Fault features may be found.

I highly recommend this wonderful book to anyone planning a trip to California, anyone who has an interest in the Earth and its processes, and anyone who just likes a darn good read.

4-0 out of 5 stars great pictures
Nice book.Fast reading.Excellent pictures. This book really hits home for Californians.Decent explanation of how the earth is moving.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book rocks!
Michael Collier has beautifully written and photographed the geological history of the San Andreas Fault. In what COULD have been an extremely dry subject he has captured my imagination with the most gorgeous photos and his plain-speaking explanations of geology. It's literally a page turner, too, with the flip-page diagram, showing the movement of the tectonic plates.A beautiful book worthy of the coffee table and a wonderful addition to my reference library. ... California has plenty of faults seismic faults that is. They shear the Golden State into ribbons and have largely crafted California's geologically diverse and dynamic landscape. With humor and ease, Finding Fault in California leads the earthquake curious to the state's most accessible, active, and earth-shaping faults and tells the stories behind the major temblors that have shaken the regionThe book begins with a discussion about what faults are and how to recognize them. The geologic tours follow, exploring the seismic hazards of the Los Angeles Basin, the San Francisco Bay Area, central California, the Mojave Desert, a neighborhood that is slowly being wrenched in two by the creeping Calaveras fault, and a now-landscaped surface rupture from the 1971 San Fernando quake in a McDonald's parking lot giving new meaning to an order for burgers and shakesPhotos, maps, and diagrams, most with precise GPS coordinates, illustrate the conversational text.Entertaining sidebars highlight the often ingenious methods of modern fault-finding researchers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent science, Entertaining reading
For anyone in California, or anyone interested in earthquakes in general, this book should be a must read.Hough's description of the causes and problems created by earthquakes is concise, well written and gives something of the flavor of the regions discussed.

It is difficult to make a complex science accessible to most folks, but this book can do it for many issues relating to California quakes!

1-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Title, Terrible Text
This is a dreadful little book. The best thing about it is its title-which turns out to be completely misleading. There aren't nearly enough maps to help you locate the faults, nor are there enough GPScoordinates given, nordo you get anything more than a boring cartoon summary for most of the faults.Given the amazing subject matter, California faults, and all the fascinating, horrific, wondrous stories, and strange science that exist for each of them, you'd think it would be impossible to write a mediocre to bad book about them, but somehow Ms. Hough has managed to do this. How do I hate this book?Let me count the ways.1)The geologists who work on these faults are some of the most fascinating and colorful people you'll ever meet.None of Ms. Hough'slittle summary boxes about them, even remotely captures their wonderful, obsessive, knowledgeable, souls. She rarely uses quotes by them, which is an utter crime.2)Everyone who has worked on faults has some really funny or scary stories to tell about them.I could rattle off dozens of stories she should have written up that don't appear in this book.3)The faults of California are strange, horrific, monstrous, and beautiful things. You get no sense of this in the book. You get none of the dazzling poetry of nature in this book.4)There are no terrific nuggets of humor in this book.5) This book doesn't have enough "history" of the faults in it-passages, observations etc. from the 1800's, 1900's, etc.6)The pictures are hit and miss. For every artful one, there's five or six boring to bad ones. 7)This 263 page book should be a series of about three to five books. One book should be on the faults of L.A., one book should be on the San Andreas, etc.
Anyway. This is the kind of book that an amazing number of people are going to buy because of the title, and because they think they need it on their shelves as a reference. This is however a book that I doubt that anyone, apart from the writer and its editors, can bear to read from cover to cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars An unusual survey peppered with black and white photos
California has plenty of seismic faults which are responsible for creating the state's diverse geological landscapes, and Susan Hough serves as your travel guide to finding these faults in Finding Fault In California. This is perfect for any who would tour the state with geology or faults in mind: chapters provide background earthquake and activity history, maps to pinpoint specific locations, and plenty of detail for both geologists and would-be visitors to California. An unusual survey peppered with black and white photos throughout.

Product Description
Japan National Oil Corporation (JNOC) (presently Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation) launched a multidisciplinary and international project on the Evaluation of Traps and Seals in 1997. The project ended in 2003. This AAPG Memoir resulted from that project and includes JNOC research articles as well as contributions from industry and academia.

The 17 papers in this volume cover topics such as a method to estimate the amount of oil/gas accumulation using the concept of equivalent grain size in seal rock, and oil/gas migration to and spill-point geometry of petroleum traps; two case studies of fault seal assessment applied to normal faults in Tertiary clastic reservoirs in offshore Sarawak and offshore Gulf of Thailand; and physical analog studies of the development of extensional faults.

This volume also contains a valuable bibliography of nearly 1000 additional articles and books published on fault traps, fault seal processes, and fault-related fluid flow in sedimentary basins, for use as a reference tool to delve into publications preceding this volume.

This Memoir is an important addition to the list of publications on fault seals and fault-associated fluid flow in sedimentary basins.

Product Description
Tectonic faults are sites of localized motion, both at the Earth's surface and within its dynamic interior. Faulting is directly linked to a wide range of global phenomena, including long-term climate change and the evolution of hominids, the opening and closure of oceans, and the rise and fall of mountain ranges. In Tectonic Faults, scientists from a variety of disciplines explore the connections between faulting and the processes of the Earth's atmosphere, surface, and interior. They consider faults and faulting from many different vantage points—including those of surface analysts, geochemists, material scientists, and physicists—and in all scales, from seismic fault slip to moving tectonic plates. They address basic issues, including the imaging of faults from Earth's surface to the base of the lithosphere and deeper, the structure and rheology of fault rocks, and the role of fluids and melt on the physical properties of deforming rock. They suggest strategies for understanding the interaction of faulting with topography and climate, predicting fault behavior, and interpreting the impacts on the rock record and the human environment. Using an Earth Systems approach, Tectonic Faults provides a new understanding of feedback between faulting and Earth’s atmospheric, surface, and interior processes, and recommends new approaches for advancing knowledge of tectonic faults as an integral part of our dynamic planet. ... Product Description
Faults and their deeper level equivalents, shear zones, are localized regions of intense deformation within the Earth. They are recognized at all scales from micro to plate boundary, and are important examples of the nature of heterogeneous deformation in natural rocks. Faults and shear zones are significant as they profoundly influence the location, architecture and evolution of a broad range of geological phenomena. The topography and bathymetry of the Earth's surface is marked by mountain belts and sedimentary basins which are controlled by faults and shear zones. In addition faults and shear zones control fluid migration and transport including hydrothermal and hydrocarbon systems. Once faults and shear zones are established, they are often long-lived features prone to multiple reactivation over very large time-scales. This collection of papers addresses lithospheric deformation and the rheology of shear zones, together with processes of partitioning and the unravelling of fault and shear zone histories.

When Jérôme Lafirme died, his neighbors awaited the results of his sudden taking off with indolent watchfulness. It was a matter of unusual interest to them that a plantation of four thousand acres had been left unincumbered to the disposal of a handsome, inconsolable, childless Creole widow of thirty. A _bêtise_ of some sort might safely be looked for. But time passing, the anticipated folly failed to reveal itself; and the only wonder was that Thérèse Lafirme so successfully followed the methods of her departed husband. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars At Fault by Kate Chopin
Because I loved The Awakening, I decided to read one of Chopin's lesser-known novels, At Fault, which is set in late nineteenth century Louisiana. This novel deals with many issues, such as religion, divorce, alcoholism, and violence, in a relatively short length of text. The main characters are Therese and David, who meet through business and fall in love.David is a divorced Unitarian, and Therese, a widowed Catholic.Because of David's religion and divorce, Therese declines his eventual marriage proposal, and instead convinces him to return to his estranged ex-wife, Fanny--which proves tragic and disastrous. There are also some tertiary, though equally important characters in the story--Melicent and Gregoir, for one.Like Therese and David, they have a relationship of sorts, but Melicent will not condescend to Gregoir's advances because they are of a different class. What this novel deals quite successfully with, if such can be done, is that in our society (and especially back during the late 19th century) we are often told that we should bridle our passions lest they get the best of us.However, there are just as many consequences, and perhaps many more, for NOT going with our passions and our feelings. In containing our love for others and attempting to conduct life as if such feelings do not exist, is like a form of death and destruction--akin to William Blake's sentiment that "he who desires and acts not breeds pestilence."Once Therese realizes that David's returning to his ex-wife has caused much untold suffering--she has sort of a "Dark Night of the Soul" moment where she asks herself, over and over again, "Was I right? Was I right?"This was indeed the turning point in the novel, where I believe that Therese began to question what she knows, and what she thought she believed about what is "right."I will leave the rest of the story as a mystery for those who wish to not have it spoiled.I highly recommend this short, yet exquisitely written book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Try this one...
If you've read The Awakening and could appreciate the ideas and writing, but were not as impressed with it as others tend to be, try At Fault. It's compact story that I wished was developed further because of its originality and intrigue.Don't take Kate Chopin off your list after The Awakening--try this one!

Them rocks, they just a-keep right on a-moving...And, to cut a geographically eternal story short, them earthquakes keep right on a-happening.New Zealand has more than 150 geological faults that are known to be active; many of them twitch repeatedly and around 200 earthquakes a year are big enough to be felt. Rocked and Ruptured investigates where New Zealand's main faults lie and explores the consequences of this country's location astride the boundary between two tectonic plates. Tectonic forces create the faults and their associated earthquakes and account for New Zealand's volcanoes, geothermal activity and mountain chains. This book gives comprehensive yet easy-to-read explanations about how and why faults occur, their impact on the environment when they shake and shudder, how they are recorded and what past events can tell us about future movements of the earth. ...
