Product Description
The legal status, responsibilities and rights of men who are fathers - married or unmarried, cohabiting or separated, biological or social in nature - is a topic with a long and well-documented history. Yet recent developments in a number of countries suggest a growing politicisation of the relationship between law and fatherhood. In some countries, an increasingly vocal, visible and well-organised fathers' rights movement has been credited with influencing perceptions of the politics of family justice. Fathers, it is argued, have become the new victims of family law justice systems that have swung 'too far' in favour of mothers. Armed with such claims, fathers' rights activists have set out to achieve a range of legal reforms, most notably in the areas of child support law and contact and residence rights following separation. This book presents an attempt to understand these developments.Bringing together leading international commentators it provides a careful, critical and comparative analysis of the work of fathers' rights activists, the role law has played in their campaigning, their legal strategies, their success (or otherwise) in achieving legal reform, similarities and divergences with the women's movement, and the relationship between fathers' rights movements and the societies that frame them. In addition to Collier and Sheldon, contributors include: Susan B Boyd (University of British Columbia, Canada), Jocelyn Crowley (Rutgers University, USA), Maria Eriksson (Goteborg University, Sweden), Keith Pringle (Aalborg University, Denmark), Helen Rhoades (Melbourne University, Australia), and Carol Smart (Manchester University, UK). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Every divorced father & Mother should read this book
You can change the title to "A Mother's Rights" it works both ways. This is the best book I have ever read on a parents rights. It is so fasinating & an easy read.
Everyone who is going to court over child custody should read this book first before they ever step into a courtroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I had this from day 1
There's a lot of great info in here.I wish I had bought this the day the divorce started.Even a year later, it's a great resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for fathers
I bought this book before retaining an attorney. Other than helping me choose and communicate effectively with my attorney, this book was particularly helpful with the following issues.

Mr. Gross first emphasizes the importance of separating legal issues from non-legal issues, and the importance of establishing an effective support structure accordingly. We need an attorney for legal issues, but we need friends, family, and therapists to address your emotional issues. This may sound so obvious, but I found myself from time to time tempted to mix those different sets of issues. This book has always reminded me to "put legal and financial issues in one basket (for my attorney), and emotional issues in another basket (for family and friends)."Thanks to this book, I have been able to receive great legal help from my attorney without wasting my money addressing issues that do not even help my legal case, and receive unconditional emotional support from my friends.

In the majority of the book, Mr. Gross explains how the family law system is set up, what options are available, what to expected in different legal procedures, what to consider when we take an action, etc. His explanations are very clear and succinct. He provides a lot of concrete pieces of advice (what to do and what not to do). The range of topics he covers is very wide; so, I encourage you to look at the table of contents. In this light, this book was extremely helpful educating myself with the legal system, and made my communication with my attorney very effective.

I found his appendices very useful. While there are a lot of commonalities across the country, different states approach/view the same legal issues differently. Mr. Gross fills this gap in Appendix C: Custody Presumptions and in Appendix D: Custody Factors.

Last but not least, I like the author's tone of voice. He acknowledges emotional issues that divorcing/separating fathers go through, and his sensitivity is reflected in the overall tone of the book. If you're "freaking out" about custody issues, this is one of the best books that I strongly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read-but with another book,
'Fathers rights' is an excellent book for all those many thousands of us trying to keep in touch with much loved kids after divorce. I would strongly recommend reading FAMILY COURT HELL (available on amazon) with this book too. FAMILY COURT HELL is about one man's case that went to court a record 133 times and launched the worldwide Fathers 4 Justicecampaign. The FAMILY COURT HELL case eventually resolved, but with no thanks to any court or judge, but instead with a combination of the fathers determination, the international protests he launched and his kids becoming old enough to take on the mother and the family law system-which they won! A must read, both books, gives you hope through the darkest of days.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Book Period
I have to say it is an excellent book. I do not have any children, but a
lot of my friends do. Some are married and some aren't. I have convinced 4
of them to read the book and 3 out of the 4 finished. I learned so much
from this book. All my friends have said the same thing that I have after
reading the book. You are very clear expressing your point. That makes a world of difference in reading a book, is how easy it is to understand. I am into family law and this has to be the best book I have ever read period. Not just for a law book, but for any book, it has changed my life. It makes me
think about every step I take. ... Read more

Jeffery Leving has spent more than a decade in the trenches ofdomestic law. From that perspective, he gives men embroiled in custodydisputes a powerful and impassioned voice in Fathers Rights.Arguing that men are disenfranchised and stigmatized by a biased legalsystem, Leving promises help through such difficulties as findingempathetic attorneys, avoiding unhealthy custody arrangements, protecting the child-parent relationship, and remaining financiallysolvent. 3-0 out of 5 stars Good basic help
I was specting more information and more details from this author. Seems like no one can really take the guts to talk open about it.
This book is ok for someone with cero information.

1-0 out of 5 stars Just what men want to hear
Why don't men just clean up their act and redefine what a "man" is?

A healthy "man" enjoys internet porn, objectifies young women, is aggressive, non emotional and works many hours.A normal man cant handle being around his kids 24/7 and raising them.

US Men are the animals who finance the worlds child sex slave trafficking industry.Men are the pedophiles in society.Men have molested countless little girls through time.Men expose themselves in public as a matter of routine.

The saying is men think with their ____s.

Now you want the courts to ignore all that men do and give you a fair shake as a mother?

A man can never be a mother.Men need to behave better and be trustworthy around children.Men can't be men and be mothers. No other male mammal wants anything to do with it's offspring. It isn't natural. It's how it is.Stop complaining when it doesn't go the way you men like it and made it!

Keep buying these books and thinking you can be a mother or replace a mother. As a parent, especially to girls, men are inferior, IN GENERAL.

Product Description
All across America, angry fathers are demanding rights. These men claim that since the breakdown of their own families, they have been deprived of access to their children. Joining together to form fathers' rights groups, the mostly white, middle-class men meet in small venues to speak their minds about the state of the American family and, more specifically, to talk about the problems they personally face, for which they blame current child support and child custody policies. Dissatisfied with these systems, fathers' rights groups advocate on behalf of legal reforms that will lower their child support payments and help them obtain automatic joint custody of their children.

In Defiant Dads, Jocelyn Elise Crowley offers a superbly balanced examination of these groups in order to understand why they object to the current child support and child custody systems; what their political agenda, if enacted, would mean for their members' children or children's mothers; and how well they deal with their members' interpersonal issues concerning their ex-partners and their role as parents. Based on interviews with more than 150 fathers' rights group leaders and members, as well as close observation of group meetings and analysis of their rhetoric and advocacy literature, this important book is the first extensive, in-depth account of the emergence of fathers' rights groups in the United States. A nuanced and timely look at an emerging social movement, Defiant Dads is a revealing investigation into the changing dynamics of both the American family and gender relations in American society. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars To be read between the lines
It is important that all pro-family and pro-parent activists read this book closely -- not because it offers an accurate assement of the problems it discusses, but rather, because the book provides a blue-print for the anti-family strategy of (one camp of) the extremely influential social engineers who do so much to make sure children are raised bt the nanny state. The policy aims promuulgated by the author are directed at "domesticating" those pathers who are increasingly being pushed out of their children's lives.

In short, the ideal expressed in this book is to see fathers "helped" through supervision, intrusion, intervention into becoming obedient drones who allow themselves to be docile subjects, obedient to the control-freak priorities of bureaucrats who enforece the rule of big government. "Abolish the family!" said the Communist Manifesto in 1848.

The road to hell is paved by social engineers with therapeutic "solutions" used as paving stones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable addition to public policy collections
Dr. Crowley has provided an excellent addition to the scholarly literature on public interest groups. Crowley offers an unflinching analysis of the fathers' rights groups in America, surveying the internal dynamics, functions, and make-up of these groups. Combining statistical data and interviews, Crowley is able to create a thorough study that should prove invaluable to scholars in the fields of public policy, child custody law, and organizational behavior.

Defiant Dads not only examines the functions and structure of the fathers' rights groups, but also discusses the groups' efforts in affecting public policy. How have these groups fared in the public sphere and what implications might their efforts have on the social and economic well-being of children and mothers of divorce? Crowley's book details the father's frustrations with the current system, assesses the risk involved in implementing new policies, and poses potential directions to help resolve the present day dilemmas surrounding fathers' rights to custody, singles mother's well-being, and the best interests of children of divorce.

This is a timely and unique study that is a must for any public policy collection.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother Buying This Book
This book is a total sham. If I wanted to take in this much feminist garbage I'd call my husband's ex-wife; who has gone so low in the past as to DENY us visitation and threatened to calls the cops if we didn't give her money in ADDITION to the court ordered amount (which she always received on time). Yes you read that right!! If using your child for extortion isn't offensive to some of you then I don't know what is.

This book does NOTHING to make anyone aware of what fathers and their new families go through in REAL divorces. It figures she married the socialist Allan Colmes, need I say more?

5-0 out of 5 stars DEFIANT DADS, A DEFINING WORK
Dr. Jocelyn Elise Crowley has written a defining work on the subject of father's rights in this country. The academic precision with which she approaches this subject is dazzling. The depth of the research, coupled with its balanced presentation, resulted in an informative and thought-provoking book.

A staggering number of children are living with one parent. It is the desire to have both parents of one-parent households act in the best interest of these children that stands out as the goal that Dr. Crowley would like to see achieved.

As one would expect, fathers are shown in both positive and negative lights. Some fathers are not emotionally or financially able to positively impact their children's lives.Others, with the best intentions, are thwarted by vindictive mothers. However, the overriding message is that the father's rights groups can and do accomplish much of what they set out to do, and are in a unique position to accomplish a lot more.

Kudos to Dr. Crowley.

5-0 out of 5 stars Isn't a Father more than a Paycheck and Spermbank?
If women were treated as second class citizens the way fathers are treated by the so-called family court, the feminists would pitch an uproar the likes of which we have never seen. Statistics show that approximately %78 of divorices are filed by women. A divorice attorney for a women has it easy. When I went as a Pro Se litigent in 1993, the court-appointed mediator at Washington County in Minnesota blithly explained to me that "Joint physical and legal custody didn't matter." I went to be adjudicated as be my daughter's legal father, and could not afford the $1,500.00 retainer for an attorney. After taking my daughter's mother to court for denial of visitation five times in ten years, I've learnt that the only thing the courts are interested in are seperating the father from his children and his money, and wether or not the judge has a personal like for your attorney. I still see my daughter -- when it is to her mother's convenience. Attorneys make money hand over fist in this business -- and this is indeed big business! The case workers and court mediators are women who have a chip on their shoulder. Judges are adament when it comes to enforcing child support, but alarmingly lax when it comes to enforcing visitation. Yet our hard-earned tax dollars pay their salary. I don't understand why more fathers don't speak out on these issues, as any women certainly would. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A battle for a child.
Cory Jacobs has just returned to Ann Arbor, Michigan to become a father to his son Cory Jr., whom he has not seen in four years. Realizing the mistakes he made in the past, Cory wants to put all the negativity and hurt from his first marriage behind him. Finally, he is ready to reach out to his estranged ex-wife Paula, for the sake of little Cory. The first meeting between father and son is a positive one, the two quickly form a loving bond as if no time ever separated them.

All is well with the reunion until Paula becomes uncooperative by denying Cory access to his son's social security number for insurance purposes. Cory then begins to suspect that Paula may be up to something unsavory regarding Cory and government funds; further investigation proves his theory correct. Paula soon becomes enraged upon learning that Cory is happily remarried and no longer wants a relationship with her.For spite, she begins to deny Cory his visitation rights. Heartbroken and frustrated, Cory tries to gain access to his son, only to have Paula sabotaging his efforts every step of the way. Leaving him no other choice, Cory must seek custodial rights through the courts, prompting even more hateful antics from Paula.

FATHERS HAVE RIGHTS TOO by Robert G. Lockhart had the potential to be a good novel regarding the trials and tribulations that fathers endure when battling for parental rights. However, there were some distracting aspects of the novel. The dialogue between the characters was stiff and at times didn't seem to flow naturally. The characters could have been developed a bit more as well, they seemed too one dimensional. I would have loved to have read more in depth details about what drove Cory. What truly drove him to seek a relationship with his son after all that time had passed? And why was he so willing to take care of another woman's children when he had no interaction with his own? Paula seemed to be just a stereotypical vengeful woman. It would have been interesting reading if we were given more information into her thoughts and her life.

Characters also seemed to pop up out of nowhere, like the character of Cory's daughter by a third woman. There was no mention of her or her mother until mid novel when she came over for a visit. Disappointingly, the great court battle was anything but great, it lacked any kind of excitement. A novel regarding a father's legal battles could have used a heartfelt court scene. The novel was in need of an editor. There were mistakes in sentence structure, and there were some sentences with a missing word here and there. Throughout the novel, one sentence would end and the very next one would put you in a different time and place without warning causing the reader to pause and reread for clarity.

As with other fathers' rights activists, Australian organizations focus on issues of erosion of the family unit, custody, access, child support, domestic violence (including false allegations, and violence against men), child abuse, maintenance, the reintroduction of fault into divorce proceedings, biased and adversarial court systems and secrecy issues. Groups have successfully garnered media, as well as influence on politicians and legal reform. On May 22, 2006, Australia passed the "Family Law Amendment (Shared Parental Responsibility) Act 2006" making both parents responsible for decisions about their child through the concept of equal shared parental responsibility. The Act requires courts to consider an order that the child spend equal amounts of time with each parent under certain circumstances, but the Act does not state that courts must order that the child spend equal amounts of time with each parent. While Dad's in Distress expressed both appreciation of the Act as a small step in the right direction and concern whether the changes would be taken seriously by Family Law Practitioners and Barry Wi...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=11468242 ... Product Description
"Betrayal of the Child" is Stewart Rein's explosive newbook on children's rights, divorce, custody, and fatherlessness. Itis, perhaps, the most comprehensive book on the market. It searchesout the historical reasons for our present irrational and injustapproach to deciding vitally important children's rights issues, cutting across the various disciplines, analyzing cause andeffect. The book is loaded with practical information for fathers, including a Father's Guide to the Courts, cases, laws, abductioninformation, case analysis, expert evidence and shared parentingstategies. It is also a hard hitting, no drawn punches book of rathersevere social, legal, and psychological criticism in which Rein laysto rest the old clichued thinking on "maternal attachment" madepopular by John Bowlby-explaining that from the child's perspectivethere exists a "triad" within the family nexus, consisting of dualfather-mother-child dyads. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Knowledge is Power
There is nothing like developing an understanding when faced with issues in life that only serve to confuse and bewilder. Reading this book has helped me understand what happened to me and my children and why. This in turn has helped me deal with the problem from a better perspective. It has also helped to alleviate some of the frustration simply by having a more complete understanding of the nature of the problem. And although it may have come too late to change my situation, I can still use this powerful information to try to help other fathers not yet divorced gain an awareness of lies in wait for them should they have the misfortune of receiving divorce papers. When warned beforehand, it is a dereliction of a man's duty as a father to fail to read this indispensible book.

5-0 out of 5 stars All parent's should be made to read this
This book has been an inspiration to me.It points out what happened, why it's bad and suggests how you should proceed.

I beg everyone to read this book.It should make everyone criticize the courts descisions as well as their own beliefs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Straight Information about Critical Issues for men and their children.
I am a divorced Dad and have gone through the Family Court system, unfortunately prior to reading this book. I have raised three children for 13 years; single-handedly and now find myself as an outsider in a custody dispute over my forth child, a 1-year-old son. I must share with anyone (women, men, dads, moms, children) that you must read this book. It is an excellent description of what fathers and their children face in the current Family court climate. Not only describing in a very truthful and non-euphemistic manner the current issues and trends but also how we got here.

One in every two men will face these issues at some point in their lives. However, most are clueless and those that are not clueless, don't seem to care. Even parents (yes, both Moms and Dads) with children who are boys, don't seem to understand just what kind of a position these boys can be in as grown men. How we got here is a sad story of misunderstandings, misbelieves, poor science, poor deduction, and clouded views, but the fact that we are still here despite significant and continually mounting evidence, is truly a shame and one of the biggest, yet "secret" failures, of our society.

If you do not read this book for yourself then read it for your son or any boy that you know will some day be a father.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's about time.
While being in a city and state that supposedly supports "father's rights", my husband and I are terrified of what we are setting into motion next week- trying to get custody of his daughter.

Despite the fact that his ex is lying about where his child support is going (luckily we have proof), her moving out of state (illegal in this state), changing his daughter's last name, refusing to let her call him "daddy" and the fact that he hasn't seen her in months (those are just the the tip of the iceburg)... there is that doubt. Because she is "The Mother".

It seems that unless a woman is on drugs or a mental institution (actually in a hospital, because meds, or refusal to take them, isn't enough apparently) the father is at the mercy of the mother's every bad day.

So we go, to possibly spend thousands of dollars, just to make the messed up court system acknowledge a beautiful, bright, six year old girl's right to know her father, any new siblings, and her father's extended family. Maybe.

And if this book seems a little "pro-man", and therefor "anti-woman", so be it. There are plenty of "empowering" books for women, why not men?

5-0 out of 5 stars Children as Fodder in the Downfall of Society
In short, if you don't know the material in this book, you don't know human rights, (including children's rights, men's or father's rights, and women's rights) as it applies in contemporary western society. If you have yet to emancipate yourself from the radical feminist induced mental slavery, you may not be ready for this book.

I've read several highly regarded father and children's rights books, and find this one by far the best. This book makes it apparent why the most staggering human rights violations in the history of the world are being perpetrated by the state and federal governments of the United States and the United Kingdom, in particular, against their own laws and ratified treaties with the United Nations. It is concerned with no less than government coerced self-implosion, using our precious children as fodder by dysfunctional, deviant, and self-appointed misandrists.

Now I finally understand why my children's lives are being ruined and I, as their father, can do nothing to prevent it.My question as to why those sworn to uphold the law in the state of Iowa would intentionally break the law, knowingly ensuring that my children will then be subjected to neglect, and physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, has finally been answered. This book makes it clear why any attempt to protect my children is met with hostility towards me, and additional abuse being forced upon them. And the detrimental lifelong consequences to my children, and to their own descendants, are becoming quite clear.

This book is for anyone truly concerned with children, men, women, our society, our descendants, or our future.Unless you find widespread, state sponsored torture and deprivation to humans desirable, I suggest you purchase and read this great work immediately, and then seriously consider taking action to prevent the downfall of western civilization.

Thank you Stewart, for your great and noble work for children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars custody tends to be economically based
This book is fair and comprehensive and, thankfully, free of feminist cant and propoganda. I learned much even though I know the material fairly well. My major insight was that custody has always been based on finding someonewho will support the child, indentured servant or divorced wife and protectthe State from having to pay. The change from father custody to mothercustody has forced the State to become increasingly effective at requiringthe parent with money to give the money to the other parent, allowingcustody to be given to the less economically viable parent.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Research & Flawed Conclusions
Mason covers the history of legal custody with the exacting detail of a trained scholar. However, her conclusion that the "best interest of the child," is best served without regard for the best best interest of the parent will give an entire new generation of judiciary the opportunity to vacate parent's civil rights in favor of their children and the state.

Her idea of giving each child in a divorce their own legal representation will most certainly serve the best interests of attorneys everywhere, while leaving middle-class parents pennyless in their pursuit of justice.

For legal education and precedent this book rates a 10.For the long-term health of civilization, it deserves a 0. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow now I can get through a divorce.
I'm not getting divorced anytime soon, but reading this book really motivated me not to ever get divorced. Anne gives great advice to the under-represented father during divorce, custody and support battles that almost always erupt. So, read this book if you are happily married father, that way you will work harder to make your marriage all it can be. If you are a father going through a divorce I would bet that this book will serve you very well, Anne is the expert on father's rights.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly helpful
A very insightful book for anyone going through a divorce -- mothers and fathers alike. Tips on "what to do if..." are invaluable and can help you be prepared when and if things go wrong. Going through my own divorce, I am grateful for the guidance contained within these pages.

4-0 out of 5 stars if even one fact makes a difference...
(Disclaimer: Anne is a friend of mine.) Much of the book is obvious common sense, but if you learn just one legal fact from the non-obvious portions of the book, and that fact makes any difference in your case, that will probably be well worth the cover price.I didn't know, for example, that (1) whoever has custody gets tax deductions for the children, regardless of what either parent is paying for child support, or (2) that the law views it as "parental abduction" if one parent, even the custodial parent, doesn't let the other parent be with the child during the time specified in the timeshare order. And there are many other examples in the book of facts like that that you'll need.Of course I'm not a lawyer and I don't know if there is a general consensus among divorce lawyers about the "facts" stated in the book, but if you're discussing things with a divorce lawyer, they may appreciate that you've read this book and made the effort to educate yourself, regardless of whether they agree with all of the book's advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
This well-written book is filled with excellent advice from one of the top experts in the field.Written from the perspective of what's best for the kids, you'll find specific advice, step-by-step instructions, and checklists to help you navigate through common -- and uncommon -- problems. The first section should be required reading for every parent going through divorce.

5-0 out of 5 stars No author knows more about this topic!
This author has been one of the top experts in this field for many years. It is great that she is now sharing this knowledge in an updated easy-to-follow format. No father should go through a divorce without studying this carefully. Not only will it help dad, but it will help the rest of the family as well through a difficult time. It actually would not hurt a mother going through a divorce to read this volume as well. I would recommend it heartily to mediators and other professionals involved in domestic relations work. ... Product Description
Why is the American family in crisis? Taken Into Custody argues that the most direct cause is the divorce industry: a government-run system that tears apart families, separates children from fit and loving parents, confiscates the wealth of families, and turns law-abiding citizens into criminals in ways they are powerless to avoid.
Taken Into Custody explores:

  • Why the "deadbeat dad" is not only a myth but a hoax, the creation of government officials and lawyers who plunder parents whose children they have taken away
  • How hysterical propaganda about domestic violence is destroying families, endangering children, and making criminals of innocent parents
  • The real causes of child abuse and how the abuse industry willfully ignores them
  • What drives the rash of "parental kidnappings"
  • How family courts operate as if there is no Bill of Rights, denying parents their constitutional legal protections

Taken Into Custody exposes the greatest and most destructive civil rights abuse in America today. Family courts and Soviet-style bureaucracies trample basic civil liberties, entering homes uninvited and taking away people's children at will, then throwing the parents into jail without any form of due process, much less a trial. No parent, no child, no family in America is safe. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very accurate depiction of our "family courts"
When I first learned of this title, I was completely surprised that anyone had the courage to write about this topic. More than 15 years ago, I testified on behalf of a female friend in a child custody dispute in another state. It was my first taste of what these secret courts were about, and I was left completely appalled. Aside from what I found to be completely outrageous conduct by both the judge and the attorneys (who seemed to be working together in a very clubby environment), what disturbed me even more was that no one, not even my own family, would believe me. I even went so far as to contact the local media when I witnessed the judge telling the court reporter what to type and when to leave the courtroom when he wanted to coerce the testimony of a witness. No one, and I mean NO ONE, would even bat an eye or inquire further. I had also witnessed the opposing attorney physically assault my female friend in the hallway of the courthouse during a break by aggressively grabbing her arm and holding her until she answered an informal question. In a building that was full of security, from metal detectors to K-9 teams, not a single deputy or bailiff could be bothered to respond. I was completely shocked! Had I never been exposed to it, I would likely never believe anything that had been written in this book, simply because prior to that time, I had never heard of such a thing. Nor would I have ever believed that such conduct would be possible in our "civil" courts. Years later, I went through it myself as a parent, hoping that what I had experienced as a witness was isolated to neighboring states. Big reality check--it wasn't. Even with the best of intentions to engage in fair play, be reasonable, and do what I thought was right in order to be collaborative and help nurture a positive relationship for all concerned, I was treated like a second-class citizen, with absolutely no finding of harm against me. To this day, I will never forget the many parents, mothers and fathers alike, who I met there, and who I witnessed in these courts break down in tears, experience anxiety or panic attacks, or be led off to jail without so much as a fair hearing or meaningful trial--all in the name of protecting their child's "best interests". What Dr. Baskerville describes as "Soviet-style courts" is 100 percent accurate, and should not be taken lightly by anyone who is considering marriage or divorce in the U.S. These "family courts" are only about one family, which is the marriage between judges and lawyers, and nothing more. Baskerville is correct on many counts, including how these courts are tyrannical in nature, and reward conflict at the hands of activist judges and the most low-life, bottom-feeding lawyers--with tacit approval for financially draining and demonizing innocent parents, all in the name of money and politics. From first-hand experience, I would also concur that the state is creating "deadbeat parents" through irrational child support statutes and domestic violence "laws" that turn children and their fathers into pawns for exploitation. I witnessed many occasions where fathers were locked up without a meaningful trial, almost like a Salem witch hunt, simply because the father had given up fighting or did not have the financial resources to continue their legal battle or support their children according to the demands of the court. Knowing what I've seen and experienced first-hand, I'm embarrassed and haunted at what lies beneath, that very few people are aware of or are willing to even openly discuss or admit to, given the state of denial by those who call themselves "pro-family" advocates. Baskerville's work is exhaustive and impactful, but I'm very challenged to believe that this work alone will help solve what seems to be a so deeply entrenched political issue that favors patronage between judges and trial lawyers, that it will be too late before Americans finally come to realize what is destroying traditional marriage. This is a must-read for anyone who is thinking about getting married or divorced in the U.S. without a prenuptial agreement. Thank you Dr. Baskerville for your courage in exposing the tyrannical and menacing nature of these courts.

4-0 out of 5 stars An important book, but with a few caveats
The subtitle "The War Against Fathers, Marriage, and the Family" sounds melodramatic but it's all true. This expose of the divorce industry and its abuses is very eye-opening and hopefully will help to stir action. It is very well researched and contains copious footnotes. Time and again, I found one of the facts incredible and unbelievable, but then I checked the footnote and then looked it up on the Internet to confirm that it was indeed true.

This is a strong call for action for limiting of no-fault divorce, presumption of shared custody, rationalizing child support, and reforming of domestic violence laws.

But some caveats:

1. Most importantly, I don't think that the gender bias is quite as strong as he says. The "war against fatherhood" is less convincing than the "war against marriage and the family". The chapters "Fathers and Feminism" and "Politics of Fatherhood" are weaker than the others, and also aren't necessary to reach the conclusions and recommendations of the final chapter. Unfortunately, the book will turn away potential female supportersof divorce reform by its overemphasis on the gender bias.

2. Also, a underlying philosophy of TAKEN INTO CUSTODY is anti-big-government and the author seems to be a Liberatarian. It will play into the hands of those who want to portray family-law reform as a right-wing cause.

3. Family "law" differs considerably from State to State, and the book presents something of a composite of the worst of all States. For example, the author says that false accusations of domestic violence won't affect later child custody hearings, but in some states they will. An important call for action is for a presumption of shared custody rather than a presumption of the mother getting full custody, but many states such as PA already do that. I think that a few states don't have No-Fault divorce, though unfortunately most do. It would be very helpful for the book to have an appendix or references about differences between States.

4. Adultery is not discussed, but in fact the legal protection of our imaginary "right to consensual sex without restrictions" is a very big part of the war against marriage and the family. In most states, adultery is not only legal, but it cannot even be a consideration in child custody or child support or divorce settlements. Probably Prof. Baskerville doesn'tmention adultery because A) the gender bias isn't clear -- probably as many men have affairs as women if not more; and B) It doesn't fit with the anti-big-government theme.

In summary, this is an important and powerful book, but I'm afraid that it won't get as much attention as it deserves because of its overemphasis on gender bias and its political conservatism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not in the university classroom
...I was once told not to use Lenny Bruce meterial in the university classroom where I teach social science because "he is not a scholar...is not peer published...and is not an academician."Last year, I was told not to use Baskerville's book. The good news...I was told I could show students the book after class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Expose of America's Totalitarian Gender Regime
Sadly, what is so ably documented in this book is not just limited to the US. Many countries around the world take their lead in their illiberal policies regarding fatherhood directly from the US through international organizations, academia and conferences, as I can sadly bare witness to after having spent years living in Western Europe as well as a number of Anglo-Saxon countries. The first step in the fight to restore justice to men is to demonstrate just how perverted the legal system has become in its wholesale discrimination against us. This book represents a massive leap forward in the direction of true equality, and is of course applauded by all those currently helping in the uphill struggle against Western Gender Fascism. It is, however, naturally despised by the many individuals and organizations with private, often economic interests in maintaining the current, discriminatory status quo based on unequal opportunism.

4-0 out of 5 stars Long-awaited treatment of civil injustice
I applaud Dr. Baskerville's delving into a subject that has been so thoroughly ignored in our society: the undermining of the role of fathers in raising a literate, stable generation of children in the reality of 50%+ divorce rates. He brings forward many poignant examples of the erratic inconsistency and outright flagrant abuse and excess in the family court system. Situations that, rather than promoting the "best interest of the child" as promoted by the Court system actually result in their detriment.

Unfortunately, the delivery is very academic and dry. The message is repetitive and monotonous. In reading it, one feels as though they are being clubbed by the message. I feel this detracts, rather than enhances, what should be a very significant message to those who are not aware of the issues faced by "disenfranchised fathers", and the corruption of the system that is purportedly put in place to protect children. ... Product Description
The book is about many things, and it is about one thing. The focus is on love. It's about love and how important it is in being able to raise your children equally. The court places a father's worth as nothing more than a cash machine. Dad's are eliminated from their children's lives and portrayed as "Dead Beats" when in fact many become "Dead Broke" fighting for their rights. Court's portray men wanting equal time as someone who only wants to lower child support. Is it a sin that a loving father wants to spend more time with his child than every other weekend. But a mother who calls and ask a father for money for her child's dental surgery than uses it for a Breast Enlargement has done nothing wrong as in my case. What we have is a system that was supposed to help children that has gone bad! It has become so bad that this year alone 18,000 men have committed suicide dealing with domestic disputes and family court issues. So this is my fight to help change the system for the future. ...
