    Extractions: Instructor: Alan Durfee Lectures: Tuesday, Thursday 9:25-10:40 in Clapp 218 Evening help sessions: The evening help sessions will be on Sunday (Florence) and Wednesday (Burcu), starting at 7 PM and going until about 9 PM. However, if no one comes before 7:30, the TA may leave, so if you plan to arrive later, you should contact the TA beforehand and tell her you are coming. They will be in Clapp 416. They will start Feb 12. Text: "Chaos" by James Gleick (required) and "Fractals: The Patterns of Chaos" by John Briggs (recommended). Both these books are at the Odyssey, and are on reserve in the library. There will also be a xeroxing fee, about $4, which will be billed to your college account. Technology: You will need a calculator for this course, one that does logarithms. We will also be using a computer program called "Chaotic dynamical systems software". This program runs on the Mac and is available in the computer labs. Homework: Homework can be handed in during class or put in the envelope outside my office door. Graded homework can be picked up any time from the other envelope there. Homework can be redone and handed in again, if done promptly (ie, within a few days). The graders reserve the right not to accept redone homework that is too late. All homework is due at 5 PM on the date given, unless stated otherwise. Extra copies of the assignments will be available in an envelope outside my office door.

(If you already know how the pictures are drawn , the following will make a lot more sense...) Based on (and named after) Koch's famous "snowflake curve", fractals like the ones drawn by Snowflake are a classic example of fractals in general. The concept of iterating a simple rule, and considering the infinite limit of that iterative process, is at the core of most, if not all, fractals in mathematics. Several of the concepts that characterize fractals are easy to see examples of and discuss with Snowflake. Self similarity is loosely considered the unifying quality of all things fractal. The curves explored by Snowflake are exactly self similar (that is, Snowflake draws curves that are approximations to exactly self similar curves). Essentially, that means that if you magnify any particular piece of the curve, it would look exactly like the original. (Some fractals are self similar in less exact waysfor example, the Mandelbrot set exhibits "quasi-self similarity". Magnified bits are like the orginal set, but with more intricacies. Some coastlines exhibit self similarity in that they show the same (non-Euclidean) dimension at different scales.) One of the mind-boggling things about fractals is that they challenge our traditional notion of dimension. Fractal structures often fit best between the integer dimensions that we are used to from Euclidean geometry. For example, a common measure of dimension for the classical Koch snowflake curve is (log 4)/(log 3), approximately 1.26. With Snowflake, students can create their own fractals and learn how to find the fractal dimensions of these curves.

In all, this text offers an extremely rich and engaging tour of this quite revolutionary branch of mathematical research. The most appealing aspect about Chaos and Fractals has to be its hundreds of images and graphics (with dozens in full-color) used to illustrate key concepts. Even the math-averse reader should be able to follow the basic presentation of chaos and fractals here. Since fractals often mimic natural shapes such as mountains, plants, and other biological forms, they lend themselves especially well to visual representation. Early chapters here document the mathematical oddities (or "monsters") such as the Sierpinski Gasket and the Koch Curve, which laid the groundwork for later discoveries in fractals. The book does a fine job of placing recent discoveries about chaos into a tradition of earlier mathematical research. Its description of the work of mathematicians like Pascal, Kepler, Poincaré, Sierpinski, Koch, and Mandelbrot makes for a fine read, a detective story that ends with the discovery of order in chaos. (For programmers, the authors provide short algorithms and BASIC code, which lets you try out plotting various fractals on your own.)
