Tobacco has been an essential part of the state's economic and social history for three centuries. The leaf supported thousands of families for many generations and helped create cities, support universities, and build hospitals across the state. The traditional tobacco barn has long been symbolic of the crop's significance in Tar Heel life. The last quarter of the 20th century has brought enormous changes in North Carolina's tobacco industry. One major change has been in the ways that farmers cure their tobacco. Modern bulk curing systems have made virtually every traditional flue-cure tobacco barn in the state obsolete, and the abandoned barns are rapidly disappearing.

The 20 acre farm is stocked with traditional Victorian breeds of farm animals and there are displays of farm implements and machinery. The manor house has recently been restored and displays on the first floor include a Victorian bedroom and nursery; a rare example of a 17th century decorative scheme survives in a room displayed as the private study of wool merchant William Blake. There is cooking on the kitchen range each afternoon and regular demonstrations of farm and dairy work, as well as traditional craft activities and special weekend events. Dinosaur Isle The newest dinosaur museum on the Island, it used to be based in a small room above the Sandown town library, and was called the Museum of Isle of Wight Geology, but after a generous amount of money from the National Lottery a new building was built to accommodate all the new material collected recently. The museum is easily recognisable as you walk down Culver Parade, as it looks vaguely like a large white pterosaur by the large pond When entering the museum you will hear the voice of Dr Mike Barker of the University of Portsmouth introducing you to the geological history of the Island. You will then, " In your Mind ", be transported back in time, as you walk past fossils from the Cenozoic era, until you reach a bend where a rather fine Opthalmosaurus , which was used in the filming of the BBC TV series Walking with Dinosaurs , awaits you. Next to it there is a sandpit, with some model vertebrae at the bottom, which you are supposed to uncover with the brushes provided, but this is a fairly pointless exercise so unless you have young children you may as well ignore it. Walking past some more fossils, mainly ammonites and sharks of the Cretaceous period, you then reach a door leading to the main hall, where the Dinosaurs live. There are skeletal reconstructions of
