A great book to use in teaching children the fundamentals of art.I teach a small art class & this book has become our textbook for drawing.It covers all the basics & also includes some great right brain lessons.

I read the book from the library but later felt the book worth keeping. This is the reason I ordered one for myself. It is easy to read, even for my kids. They can follow the text and do the work themselves. The explaination is also right on and helps get the point easily.Additionally the book is quite comprehensive, including several interesting topics. In all it is a great book and I am happy with it.

I purchased this for my step daughter for birthday and she loves it. She uses it a lot.

Great Book
Great book.Even my 11 year olds art teacher at school asked to borrow it.Makes harder things to draw easy with a great "break down" approach.

Deceptive Title, way too advanced for kids.
I ordered this book for my 8 year old grandson who loves to draw. The title said this book was for kids, and showed pictures of children around his age on the cover and back cover.
When the book arrived I was totally dissapointed. It would be hard for an adult to use this book let alone a child, at least in my opinion. I think it is way too advanced for kids. I thought the techniques would be more basic, and easier for children to follow.
This book might be good for pre-teens or teens who have lots of artistic talent in them already, but for the average child who just likes to have fun drawing I thought it was way too advanced. ... Read more

Exactly What I Wanted
This book isn't going to be any good to you if you're looking for hardcore muscle/bone structure, but if that's the case a veterinary textbook will probably serve you just fine. What this DOES have is basic form and MOVEMENT, which is the key to believable, natural animals in my opinion. Not many words in this one, but not many are needed-- what words are there are extremely insightful and helpful. Cannot recommend this enough!

Amazing!
The book is a real masterpiece. The drawings are great refference to any artist, and includes even some animation. Recomend to any animal artist or creature designer.

Best book for animal drawing
If you want to learn to draw animals from memory, that's the book to get. I bought a couple others books on the subject since, but i always come back to this one. I find this book the equivalent of the Andrew Loomis series for human anatomy.

Love it!
I ordered this book last year, and I love it! I use it when I need references for anatomy. There are tons of visual references, and not too much explaining. It also includes information on caricature, and shows how to draw animals in motion. Well worth the price!

Best book hands down for animal drawing
As an animal artist simply put, Ken Hultgren is my hero and this is the best book on the subject by far.While there may not be a lot of words and the coverage may not be as expansive, when you study animals you only need to understand how to get to the most basic shapes and forms.On this note, Hultgren is the master in this area.His accuracy in pen and construction is unparalleled and even though I've spent years drawing animal anatomy, my construction hasn't even begun to approach that of hultgren's abilities.

The detail and execution he gives to every animal more than makes up for any percieved lack of species.So if there's any book you have to get to draw animals, get this one.

And lastly if you want to see what Hultgren's art has done, go to deviantart and look up whisperpntr.While I do not have a lot of old work to show, you can see a clear before and after difference.I credit it all to this man. ... Read more

good ideas for journals/sketchbooks
Good book for ideas. Another typical book with ideas about journals and sketchbooks, yet this one has a bit more punch to the ideas. Worth the money.

Nioce, but not quite what I was expecting
I was kind of expecting a book that I could draw directly in, kind of like a sketchbook but with the little lessons and ideas to spark creativity(Idea Journal is more like that sketchbook kind of format).The Drawing Lab is more like a lesson-by-lesson format though, with lists of materials you'll need (could always improvise but you will need some sort of art supply stash to do the activities).I've glanced through the different lessons in it and have done the first one already, and it was pretty fun.It was a nice exercise to stretch myself beyond what I would normally do, and I got a ridiculously cute sketch of a cat out of it.Where she says limitations "relieve the pressure of what to draw" is exactly what this book is.It gives your creativity a direction and you end up creating things that otherwise you probably wouldn't have.Fun stuff.

It's Like A Makeover for Your Mind
I can't draw worth beans, and to say I was skeptical of the usefulness of this book would be an understatement.But the other reviews looked promising, the concept looked decent, and I was feeling funsy.I'm SO GLAD I GOT THIS.

It's not just that I suddenly feel I can do some things I never could before-- it has somehow added to things I already could do.I've been working on a piece that didn't really even involve drawing, it was mainly stitching and paint, yet the attitude conveyed by this book and the few exercises I've tried had enormous positive impact.

Weeks of drawing fun!
Drawing Lab for Mixed-Media Artists: 52 Creative Exercises to Make Drawing Fun (Lab Series)gave me at least two weeks of pure drawing fun!I did at least half the exercises in the book; they are easy to do, and most don't require a lot of hard-to-get or expensive supplies.The exercises are educational, but also thoroughly enjoyable!A totally useful, informative, and entertaining book, I'd recommend it both for those who have never drawn (or not since being told they couldn't draw in grade school) and for those who have been drawing all their lives, but need to get back to the absolute fun of it!BUY THIS BOOK, AND ENJOY DRAWING!

Flat out Inspiring
I got my book in the mail today and for someone who doesn't like to draw or doesn't have an art program at school this might be a joy ride for you! After flipping through this month's issue of Martha Stewart Living I opened up my Amazon.com box and flipped through this book with no expectations for it at all. With my mind clear with an empty slate being this is my first purchased drawing book I flipped through the pages one by one and read what she wrote for the instructions!! Her words alone inspire you to try the projects that scatter the pages throughout the whole book, and all you have to do is have a pencil, pen, watercolor set or charcoal and you're on your way to a beautiful creation! AWESOME!!
I am a homeschooling mom and bought this book to try out some fun art/craft time with my daughter.It was a hit!We sat for hours doing the little thumb and fingerprint art.Even I, Mom, got in on the action. (I was proud of my art also. hehe)Ihighly recommend this fingerprint art book to anyone young or old.

Two thumbs up!!
This book and other books by Ed Emberley are nothing short of amazing! My six year old daughter had a blast making thumb and finger print drawings. Other members of the family of varied age groups find it equally intriguing. It is just astonishing that how many things we create with just a few strokes of lines.This book is bound to fire your imagination. You can make amazing greeting cards, birthday cards, messages... just be creative.

I see many kids (including mine) stuck to their DS or PS2 or other kind of video games and older ones to their ipods and whatnot! I find books like this and Ed's other books such as Picture Pie as an oasis. They make neurons dance while you amaze yourself with creativity.Picture Pie is also a wonderful book to introduce geometry to little kids without using words like 'math' and 'study'!

Gift for Daughter.
This was a gift for my artist daughter. I have not heard her opinion as yet. From my examination of the book, it is very informative. I was somewhat disappointed that for the price, it is not hard covered.

A treasure of drawings
I love this book and refer to it whenever I am feeling inadequate about my art. It is inspiring to see the drawings of the great Masters, and the commentary is excellent insight. WONDERFUL book.

Chaet's"Drawing" is a Masterwork
Bernard Chaet's book, "The Art of Drawing", is a small classic that explains what makes a drawing great.Chaet is a well known art professor from Yale who searches the history of Fine Art as well as his own archives to give examples of the finest drawing skills frommaster artists and former students who went on to become recognized as some of the best in America. Michael Mazer, who just finished illustrating the latest translation of Dante's "Inferno" by Pinskey, is one of Chaet's former pupils who's early exercises appear in "The Art of Drawing". Chaet emphasises time honored exercises that art students have been struggling with for the best part of a century such as drawing: shoes, paper bags, and a semester's worth of bug (!) drawings. Even humdrum assignments can become inspired artwork, and Chaet presents outstanding sketches to show that given the right grasp of page design, any subject can become a riveting image. This book is really about all of the design choices an artist has to make before he takes up the humble pencil and tries to produce a first class drawing. Review of The Art of Drawing People
Good instruction book on drawing portraits. Portraits are my passion so this was very helpful. I love Amazon for all they offer.

This a great book
this book "The art of drawing people.This a great book on learning to draw people(portraits, figures, etc.). It is broken down into 5 sections. Four of thesections are broken down by 4 different skilled artists. The first section gives a brief introduction for supplies, basic principles for drawing, composition, etc. The second section is discussing and illustrating anatomy. The third section covers faces with a simple style approach. The fourth section covers people, using formulas for faces, anatomy, very realistic, etc, The fifth section covers other sections and approaches to drawing people.

One of the other great features in this book is the diversity of step by step drawing of people; covering very young children, teens, young adults, mature adults, elders and many different ethnic backgrounds. This is one of those books that will be in constant use for many years

A Portrait Must Have
This book is a great reference to have on the bookshelf of your studio if you're an artist and a great learning tool if you want to be an artist and/or learn to draw. I have several in this Collector's Series; The Art of Basic Drawing, The Art of Drawing Dragons and other Fantasy Creatures and The Art of Pencil Drawing. The Art of Dwaing by Willy Pogany
Ran across a copy at a coffee shop in St Pete's Fl, called the globe, hadnt worked on my art in a long time. It inspired me so got it and its a great new tool and in perfect condition. It has inspired to do a new painting.. love it

Exactly the same book as Drawing Lessons
This is an excellent instruction book with beautiful drawings.
Don't make my mistake, this is exactly the same book as "Drawing Lessons" by the same author.

page 116
on page 116 there is a sketch of a woman who has her arms tied behind her back with a rope!! I would be just as angry and upset if it were a sketch of a man.Why did the artist feel this was appropriate?I realize Mr. Pogany died some time ago, but I think the picture should not have been included.

Classic
The artist is very good. The descriptions are a bit sparse but concise. Lots of examples. What this artist seems to emphasize is the flow and the subtlety of human anatomy. Something which has been lost in the modern art world. So it's refreshing to see this demonstrated in the 21st century. Now I totally disagree what another reviewer says about learning art, e.g. Betty Edwards method verse classic. Classic is an advanced form of what Betty Edwards teaches which assumes you've already demostrated that you can 'see'. Willy Pogany goes well beyond just drawing what you see. This comes with much experience.

The Art of Drawing-- I Like it!...
...yet it took a long time for this to really grow on me. It looked a little *too* basic at first!

Reasons to buy this book: 1. Beautiful, *clear & simple* figure linework & shading; and 2. It's 120+ pages, filled with 100% pure pencil drawings for beginners.

Why do I like it? It's all about the clear & simple figure linework & shading. Including a brief introduction to perspective, the basics of figure drawing here are *really* rock-solid. His excellent drawings of women & children really stand out, and are the highlight of the book for me. The earliest copyright in my copy is 1972, but it was originally published way before that, as Willy Pogany actually lived between 1882-1955. A book doesn't last this long without reason(!). When you have linework & shading as clean & accurate as often seen here, the technique can be applied to any drawing style at any time. It's certainly helpful for life drawing in general, and that's something that never gets outdated (at least not quickly!).

Similar great books for beginners: George Bridgman's Heads, Features and Faces & Constructive Anatomy; Jack Hamm's Drawing the Head and Figure; Andrew Loomis' Drawing: The Head (HT197); and Barbara Bradley's Drawing People: How to Portray the Clothed Figure. I'm excited to give this to my son
I love the great detail and range of categories in this book. There's a still life section, vehicles, landscape animals and whatnot. It's a longer book and more helpful than other books like this from other publishers that I've seen.

I'm just beginning to draw and this book doesn't offer much in the form of directions.It is an awesome book, but if you are just learning this book is to advanced.I will put it on a shelf for now and save it for future use.

A MUST HAVE!
This book is FABULOUS and very informative.It is a must to have or to offer as a gift for any person that are into drawing.So BEAUTIFUL.really buy it you will experience beauty and information when you open this book.

Very Artful Book, botanically wonderful, but NOT about drawing
You need a good set of watercolors and some experience in painting in order to use this book. I am an art hobbyest who is interested in drawing flowers and other plants, therefore, I thought this "Introductory Guide" would be helpful to me. In fact, it is one of four such books that I recently bought from Amazon on this subject. (will post reviews on the other ones soon). While this book is at least as lovely as any of the others, it is actually all about watercolor painting.(Maybe it has something to do with the way the book was translated from the French?)

I work in graphite, pen-and-ink, colored pencils, and, newly, pastels. When I do branch out to watercolor I plan to first use my 16 pan Prang set from when I was in school. Where the book discusses materials, it depicts a professional watercolor set of FIFTY-THREE pans, and also, watercolors in tubes, such as professionals use. I'm sure I will be drawing (I mean "painting") plants with my good school Prang set soon, but you really do need a wide variety of pigments in order to get the full benefit of this book. **I just checked: such sets cost HUNDREDS of dollars**

On each beautiful two-page layout, a plant type is discussed (tiny type-face, though), gorgeous examples are shown, and a chart is presented with the names and swatches of the exact colors needed to render the subject. I've never seen this done, and it seems to be extraodinarily helpful. At the same time, this is no paint-by-number type of book, or one that teaches slavish copying.

Another thing I love about this book is botanical information it provides. Seeing and painting living plants is one thing, but to understand them, their anatomy and other characteristics is to add understanding and meaning to art work, in my opinion. (I hope to purchase a large "botany for artists" book sometime, too.)

Lovely book for watercolor artists. I don't think it is too short--there is plenty of information, and many types of plants and exercises. The type font is just rather small, especially when they use the script-style print. I can use my "readers glasses", but I can't do watercolors, so it was rather a waste for me.

Good Beginning
Good introduction to the topic of Botanical Drawing.Helpful pictures of the results to achieve very useful.Practical book that is beautifully designed in smaller format than others of its type.

Beautiful; But Too Short...
This is a very, VERY, beautiful book. Excellent from beginning to end. The treatment of the subject is almost perfection...So much so that you will LITERALLY REGRET that this book is only 96 pages long. The illustrations are simply amazing and presented in such a way where it encourages, not discourages the reader to develope any artistic bent that they may have. It nurtures that desire...Excellent work, but regretably short because of that.

Naturally Simple
Beautiful, well presented, inspirational, motivating and surprisingly easy in its simple presentation that allows your creative genius free without feeling you can't do it. I am an artist and I do specialize in drawing nature but I have a long way to go before I reach a level I am satisfied with however, I may have just reached it last night, only hours after picking up the book to use it. Quintessential Fashion
Kenneth PB was the model of an artist who mastered fashion illustration by his talents. He was a stylist as well as a drawer - the combination led to rich, expressive, inspirational works of art. This book tells his story well and shows his genius with beautiful reproductions.

Art indeed!
Beautiful book: a testament to KPB's work and position in the history of fashion illustration.He will be greatly missed, but at least we have this legacy, a record of his achievements.While some of my favorite examples of his work didn't make it into this book, many I never saw did, so it is still a pleasure to visit again and again.

Truly inspiring!
Recommended by one of my teachers at Parsons, this book lived up to its expectations.It is a privilege to be able to see the art of the true artist, Kenneth Paul Block, all condensed into this lovely book.Sadly, the art of illustration is no longer as honoured as before.Even the movement expressed by the figure on the cover of the book is truly inspiring!

Great for anyone with ADHD
This isa great book for anyone with ADHD. Art and drawing help you to concentrate and focus. It is good for a child, teen or an adult, a natural, self-help therapy. If you or anyone you know has ADHD, buy this book for them, and encourage them to learn to draw faces.

Nice series of books, these Old Master Portrait Drawings from Dover Art Library. Good material if you want to study portrait drawing. Good reproductions of the drawings. No text, only a short introduction from the publisher and titles with the drawings. The drawings say it all.

A great book
I bought this book for my kids, but it makes me want to sitdown and doodle!

What fun!
I wanted my daughter to learn basic skills drawing figures, but I am having a lot of fun doing it with her.

It is easy a human can do it
No, I am not trying to sell you an insurance. But this book can be the beginning of a great relationship between you child and his pencil doodles. Don't miss this opportunity to buy other books from this author. Also, you can get the ART FOR KIDS: CARTOONING by Art Roche. If you think your child could someday replace Charles M. Schulz or Stan Lee this is the book to get. I did. You can even have some fun trying to draw and making up stories. Well, I hope you or your child gets famous. Good Luck.

A great guide to cartooning!
My daughter absolutely loves this book and it improved her cartoons right away!I like the variety of different possible features presented.This is a beatiful, very well done book.

GREAT BLEND OF INSTRUCTION AND INSPIRATION
This is unlike any other cartooning book past or present. Too many cooks of this genre show you the standard "draw an oval and a triangle and now you have a duck!" or "draw like I do!" instructions. Art Roche's book teaches kids to think, to imagine, to be funny. Art gives readers the tools to pursue their styles, not his. It's an easy read, full of great illustrations, and humorous examples. Excellent!Must Have!
This book is excellent!My drawing has improved dramatically because Lee Hammond REALLY teaches you how to "draw" what you "see".It actually works!It's incredible. I felt like I was in a rut and could not progress any further, but with the exercises in this book, my drawing world has re-opened and is definitely building my confidence.I feel like I can draw anything! I am SO HAPPY with this purchase.

The first exercise in the book (where you draw what you see in each randomly numbered square and then turn your book upside down to see what you drew) is awesome.It is the perfect way to begin the book because after you complete it, you believe in Lee Hammond's techniques and you are truly confident and ready to "draw" what you "see"!

Not enough depth on drawing.
I bought this book a few weeks ago and i thought it would be exciting. Most information in this book is just about the background history of manga, how the manga is written, how to read it, about the materials, the type of character it includes, and just things like these. Now, the chapter about How to draw, is not nearly as good as it should be. Just a few pages, not a step-by-step on how to draw. The writers left out so much in my opinion. There are so many books on How to draw manga, please be careful so you don't waste your money and your time.

One of the best
Honestly, this is one of the best books on drawing manga I've ever seen, and I'm really happy to have it. If you're looking for a book of how to draw manga style, I suggest you look for another book. :P This covers the history, types of manga, paneling, narration, perspective, backgrounds, shading, light sources, some expressions, designing characters, and there's so much more, but I won't bore you.

It's a great buy for anyone of any level. Whether you've just picked it up as a hobby, or are trying to make it big, this book has some great suggestions and steps to help you on so many different levels. This is the most complete book on creating manga I've ever had the joy of reading, and I think the best thing is: It's not boring to read. We choose this book over others because it has great multi-step drawings that were appropriate for the beginner to the more advanced detail artist. We also liked that it was not limited to just dragons. My kids are tweens and teens into Harry Potter style and martial arts drawings.

This is the book for those who wish to learn how to draw those wonderful dragon characters. Superb addition to the library of pyrographers, carvers, and other crafts folks.

Great Guide!
This book is a great reference to have on the bookshelf of your studio if you're an artist and a great learning tool if you want to be an artist and/or learn to draw. I have several in this Collector's Series; The Art of Basic Drawing, The Art of Pencil Drawing and The Art of Drawing People. They are all equally good and permanent books that I'm proud to have in my studio!

A good book, but...
First, I did not order this book from this website, but I feel I should review it anyway. The book has great information in it, easy to use, and lots of variaty. But to me, some of the creatures were represented badly. They were cartoony, or they just didnt flow right.

Drawing Portraits
This is the second book of Mr. Civardi's that I have purchased. I am impressed with the way he imparts his knowledge and expertise to the pages of this book. I highly recomend this book for anyone interested in learning to draw portraits. The detailed steps from start to finish are easy to understand and follow.

Contains mostly drawings, little description
This book had a lot of examples of Civardi's work but not a lot of tips or instructions about drawing it. In the beginning, there is a full page of suggestions but that's about all there is to it. Lots of pictures of body parts, no step-by-step, no breakdown of lines or sections. Basically, the book shows you the finished products, not really the process of drawing. As another reviewer said, if you would like a book with a lot of examples of his work, this is it.

I would suggest Jack Hamm's "Drawing the Head and Figure" over this book. Lots of substance, and the instruction is done in a way that leaves lots of room to create a unique style.

Not Much Substance
Civardi is a talented artist, but there was little substance to the book. There was very little detail about the actual drawing process and skills that might be helpful. After actually seeing the book, I was very disappointed. I had the same problem with his drawing techniques book. Both were very brief, expensive and short on substance, more like pamphlets than instruction books. If all you want is a slender book with some examples of his work and you don't mind the price, you might like this, but someone looking to learn portraiture would be best served elsewhere.

Good examples of realist drawing
I'm something of a fan of Civardi's books because I like his clean, "classical realism" style.This book is rather thin and light in describing the details of technique or giving exercises.I wouldn't recommend it to an absolute beginner (if you're just learning to draw, you would probably be better off with Betty Edwards' flawed but effective "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" or a similar book).But if you've started regular drawing practice, and want some good examples of realist portrait drawing along with useful general advice on appoaches to the subject, this book may be worth a look. ... Great Book, well worth the read
This is a great book and very easy to follow. I couldn't draw a box or a ball before reading this book and now I can't stop sketching.

Best drawing instruction book for anyone who wants to learn drawing
I'm an engineer in my late 30s who wants to learn drawing. I enjoy reading the book very much. The book is easy to follow and understand. The writing style is succinct. The presentation flow is coherent. The contents comprise Part One: Fundamentals of Drawing (19 chapters) and Part Two: Drawing in Various Media (11 chapters). I've almost finished reading Part I, and I've finished the exercises in first 9 chapters. Each chapter introduces one concept that is reinforced with the author's many excellent drawing examples. Each chapter is delightfully short - I read one chapter at night before I sleep. I also enjoy doing the exercises! I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn drawing.

Great Drawing Help!
I used this book while attending the Art Institute. I purchased it once again when I was having problems in my drawing class later on. It does help improve your drawing skills.

Creative ideas for small hands
This is a book I purchased after finding it in the library. My grandchildren have had so much fun making thumbprint pictures.They used their imaginations and made adorable pictures.Only an ink pad and paper required (as well as one thumb) so it is an inexpensive art project.
