Product Description

"Cadavers, camera, action!" (The New York Times Book Review). From the advent of photography in the 19th and into the 20th century, medical students, often in secrecy, took photographs of themselves with the cadavers that they dissected: their first patients. Featuring 138 of these historic photographs and illuminating essays by two experts on the subject, Dissection reveals a startling piece of American history. Sherwin Nuland, MD, said this is "a truly unique and important book [that] documents a period in medical education in a way that is matched by no other existing contribution." And Mary Roach said Dissection "is the most extraordinary book I have ever seen--the perfect coffee table book for all the households where I'd most like to be invited for coffee."

5-0 out of 5 stars dissecting the goods
An excellent book with insightful essays. Wonderful reproductions lusciously spread throughout. A real gem of a book. Highly recommended for those with either a penchant for the macabre or photographic history.

5-0 out of 5 stars The anatomy lab
At Galveston, where I went to Medical School, the gross anatomy lab was about 8 city blocks from the beach and palm trees. In our first lecture, the Professor noted that this was a funeral home, and that anyone taking the cadavers to the beach would be kicked out of the school. You think that's a joke at first, until you get acclimatedsome weeks later and you start thinking, "hey, I could use some sun. Perhaps Karl (the Cadaver) wants some sun, too..." then the warning pulls you short.

The boundary between proper decathexis so that one can continue to think clearly in an emergency and callousness can be very thin...(no, I never did anything bad. Although I am told that the anatomy lab was a favorite haunt for women dates of male medical students, again because of the macabre aspect.)

5-0 out of 5 stars A great peice of history
I bought this as a gift for my boss, a doctor. We all loved it.Great antique photos, info, history.Great for anyone who's interested in the stages the medical field has gone thru.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dissection:Photographs of a Rite of Passage in American Medicine 1880-1930
Excellent book as an addendum to any physician's library. There are 3 in our family, plus a PhD in cellular molecular biology and all tout this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars At the least I'm glad someone is publishing stuff like this...
I absolutely adore old photographs and paintings of bygone days.Anything that tells a little bit about some aspect of life in the past. When I heard this reviewed as pictures of medical students mugging with their human dissection subjects I couldn't wait to get it.I'm never queasy and often irreverent so I doubted I'd be offended. In addition this book educates about the rather immoral ways of obtaining medical subjects in the past, and I feel its important not to ignore the wrongs of the past. There are many photos from baltimore where many of the subjects of these dissections were black and the phrase that had been chalked on the table in one photo was particularly offensive and educational about the attitudes of many people in the past.
My only problem with this book is that it gets rather dull and repetitive. Lets be honest, it isnt purely an objective analysis of the past that makes photos like this interesting, the subject raises quite a bit of natural (if less than noble) curiosity itself. I really thought the doctors would have been more creative in posing their subjects or themselves. The corpses are often hard to see or so over used that there is not much left to see and the doctors stand the same way again and again.I'm sure this is to be expected but its a bit like seeing tons of posed class pictures of anybody, it get a bit monotonous in spite of the macabre nature of the subject.I wouldn't complain at all except that the book is a bit pricey for something that isn't quite as exciting as it sounds.Still I'm glad I bought it and can definitely understand why it costs so much.
Its also better to buy it on here than your local bookstore like I did. They kept the book behind the counter at my local large bookstore and treated me likeI was asking for porn when I asked if they had it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesomely helpful!
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone in vet school or needing an in-depth anatomy lesson. My favorite thing about it is the color drawings as well as the condensed descriptions. Way easier to read and understand than the Miller's and easier to tote to and from lab as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars SO helpful in dissection
This is affectionately called, "Miller's Lite" by both staff and students at my vet school. The colored diagrams are key in dissection. Don't know where we'd be without it.

4-0 out of 5 stars BEST dog dissection book
I bought this book for 1st year vet anatomy. It is required for the course, as it is the dissection guide. It is easy to follow and has excellent reference pictures. In this most recent edition, they are in color for the first time. I personally find gross dissection pictures more useful as a study reference, but these hand-drawn pics are just fine for locating things in antonym laboratory. I would recommend it for any vet student whose anat lab does not already have it as a required text. It has also been in the reference library of nearly every clinic I have worked it, so it is a useful reference that you will want to hold onto!

This book is in absolutely perfect condition and arrived very quickly. The price was unbeatable, so I was very happy with my purchase.

2-0 out of 5 stars haven't used just yet
I have recently just purchased this book and however am unable to rate it as it mostly applies to dissections in the lab. Since it's the end of the semester I'm hoping that next year it will come in handy. I've had class mates comment and say how useful it has been prior in the year so hopefully I have the same success. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars terrible condition
This book was listed in "very good condition",and it arrived with the first 10-15 pages missing.I need this book for class, including those first pages.I don't even know how many pages are actually missing because the entire front appendix is gone; everything until page 5 is nonexistent and you can see where the pages were either ripped out or fell out of the binding.

Not cool.

It's not worth the hassle to send it back in for a refund, but I guess all I can do is advise people to not trust this seller, Warehouse Deals, Inc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pig dissection
this book was useful in that it was very detailed, although i think for a more basic biology vertebrate class it was a little too extensive in the terms and parts of the pig.some of the pictures were hard to follow to find where the body parts were, especially in terms of the circulatory system. however, it had a great comparative anatomy of humans and cats, and fetal pigs. ... Product Description
B> C by Dissection presents a thorough introduction to the programming process by carefully developing working programs to illuminate key features of the C programming language. This book presents the concepts of the programming process using the "dissection" method. Dissection is a unique tool first developed by the authors to point out key features of program code. It is similar to a structured walk-through of the code, with the intention of explaining newly encountered programming elements and idioms as found in working code. Each chapter presents a number of carefully explained programs, which lead the reader in a holistic manner to ever-improving programming skills. Right from the start, the reader is introduced to complete programs, and at an early point in the book is introduced to writing functions as a major feature of structured programming. This edition features expanded treatment of pointers, memory management, and recursion. It also takes into account the fact that many people are learning Java as a first language and then going to C, or vice-versa, and calls out those topics that present a challenge when making such transitions (e.g. i/o, data types). This book assumes no programming background and can be used by first-time computer users or by experienced programmers who are transitioning to C. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference
Anybody trying to learn C, this is the best and probably the only book you will need.

4-0 out of 5 stars Probably need some experience...
I am a complete newcomer to programming, and am still taking my Programming in C class. Although the book claims to be for beginners, I found it a pretty difficult read. My professor's lecture only makes things foggier, so I THOUGHT I could rely on the book to clear things up, but it only does vaguely.

The books gives you an example of a program, then walks through each line of the code and explains what it does. The only problem is that it explains in jargon, which is to say, geek speak. I had trouble following along, and eventually hired a tutor to explain everything to me.

This book would be great if I already had some fundamental knowledge of the language, so if you do, go for it.

1-0 out of 5 stars C by Dissection: The Essentials of C Programming
What a horrible book! Right in the Preface, the author writes "NO BACKGROUND ASSUMED", then continues in the first sentence following; "This book assumes no programming background and can be used by students and first-time computer users."

WHAT A JOKE....

I consider myself to be a reasonably smart person.I excell in engineering, and electronics and have a desire to learn the programming.Although the author (even in reviews here!) proclaims this to be for "first-time computer users", it is not.It is bland, unintresting reading.Examples and illustrations require knowledge not previously mentioned in the book for understanding.OFTEN, the book says something like --- This is covered later in Chapter 12.... --- but its understanding is needed at that moment and in the example currently being discussed in Chapter 2 or Chapter 1 or wherever.

Then agin, It could be used by a student or first-time computer user.It could be used to keep papers from flying away or to prop a good book up on.

I wish I had my money back!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for the beginner
I needed this book for a programming class and thankfully I had a good teacher. This book starts to describe a point and then says something similar to "(See chapter 14.2)" or "Later discussed in 8.4"Can you not just tell me how to use the printf function now?The books examples are thorough and most of the programs written are dissected and explained, but they miss the part of actually teaching and explaining the function in the first place. The book also contains exercises at the end of each chapter to help reinforce what you should have learned in the chapter which can be helpful, but some are too complicated if you're just starting out.The book also has a section at the end of each section that explains how to move on to C++, along with a section of common programming errors, and an additional section for programming style. This book would be good for reference, but if you're just starting out, you should look for something different.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
This is really one of the best C books. It is easy to read and follow. The examples are top notch. It is a must to any one interested in C. ... Read more

Product Description
An outstanding piece of scholarship and a fascinating read, The Body Emblazoned is a compelling study of the culture of dissection the English Renaissance, which informed intellectual enquiry in Europe for nearly two hundred years. In this outstanding work, Jonathan Sawday explores the dark, morbid eroticism of the Renaissance anatomy theatre, and relates it to not only the great monuments of Renaissance art, but to the very foundation of the modern idea of knowledge.
Though the dazzling displays of the exterior of the body in Renaissance literature and art have long been a subject of enquiry, The Body Emblazoned considers the interior of the body, and what it meant to men and women in early modern culture.
A richly interdisciplinary work, The Body Emblazoned re-assesses modern understanding of the literature and culture of the Renaissance and its conceptualization of the body within the domains of the medical and moral, the cultural and political. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book significantly changed how I perceive the human body.
I work in the physical sciences, not biological or medical sciences, but I absolutely loved this book. We live in these clumsy things, but most of us rarely appreciate our bodies, much less appreciate those who initially undertook the gruesome task of deciphering our anatomy long before the advent of formaldehyde or other preservatives. This book places their efforts, along with the work of those who illustrated and published their discoveries, within a sensible and coherent historical (social, religious and scientific) context. I recommend it very highly!

5-0 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars for an Interesting, Yet Neglected Topic
I read the 1996 revised paperback edition of the 1995 book. However, only a small number of minor errors has been corrected and two paragraphs have been added to the preface. The book has some 370 pages, which include 32 black and white picture pages, 44 footnote pages and 270 regular text pages.

Many interesting facts and analyses are offered for both, professionals and lay readers. Most of all on the beginning of modern European dissection in the Renaissance and its surrounding circumstances such as procurement of corpses, the ultimate punishment of public dissection after execution, dissection theaters and artistic representation of the procedures e.g. by Rembrandt. But also the parallel discovery of the world in colonialism and the discovery of the human body. And the invention of the dividing and subdividing of body units. Bonus information shed light upon missed knowledge opportunities not transported via historical motion pictures: for example that all women at Elizabeth (Spotlight Series)s court had to walk around bare breasted unless married with the queen's consent and that the executed coup plotters of Valkyrie (Single-Disc Edition) had (once again) been given for dissection for extra punishment (a procedure which was refused by the university).

You may be interested in Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers on modern anatomy and other uses of human corpses.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Renaissance anatomized
The Body Emblazoned is a wide-ranging History of what the Author terms the Renaissance Culture of Dissection. In so doing, its medical, scientific, philosophical, sociological, legal and artistic aspects are opened and cut up for our perusal. The Author demonstrates how the nature of the practice of anatomy changed over the period from, in his analogy, a voyage of discovery to a kind of colonisation through taxonomy, a classification and naming of parts. We are shown a sea-change in understanding, as the prevailing model for the body's inner workings was transformed from Microcosm to Mechanism. Along the way, we learn of the many difficulties in obtaining cadavers for dissection, of the curious architecture of anatomy theatres, and of how Rembrandt and Descartes might have met in the butchers' shops of 17th century Amsterdam. Mr. Sawday's Lit. Crit. background serves him well in his penetrating analyses of anatomical reference in the works of Spenser, Donne, Carew, Cavendish and Traherne, among others, but elsewhere it seems obtrusive, in the guise of barely relevant references to Freud, Deleuze and Joyce, for example, and in a somewhat irritating overuse of inverted 'commas'. Another irritation is the Author's heavy-handed moralizing: he is too anxious to spell out how oppressive, or misogynist, or cruel are the opinions and actions of the anatomists and their ilk: in my opinion such observations have more force when readers are left to draw their own moral conclusions. That said, one by no means has to agree with a book in order to enjoy it, and this one never lost my interest. It is a most intelligent and stimulating work, skilfully presented and nicely illustrated too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great dissection guide for Medical School gross anatomy!
This is a great book to have with you in the dissection lab for Gross Anatomy. It shows you very clearly how to cut your cadaver to see everything that you need to.I used this book for my Gross Anatomy course and was able to successfully dissect everything I needed to and did very well in my laboratory exams and in the course overall. It has drawings of everything you are looking for as you dissect, and is very well organized by body sections.

Despite what the previous poster said about explanations, I thought the explanations were very good for what you needed to know while in the lab.For example, muscles were explained based on where they connected and what they were innervated by, helping you to look for relivent nerves and origin points. But, understand that if you are dissecting, you should know more about the structures before you come into lab (trying to read this as you are dissecting won't help you much, but I doubt any one would in that circumstance).

This book is by no means the only book you'll need for Gross Anatomy if you are a medical student, but if you are a medical student (one that really wants to be a doctor, and a good one at that) you'll already know that. This book works very well in conjunction with Grey's Anatomy for Students as well as an atlas of your choice (Rohens and Netters are my personal favorites). That's how the authors of this book intend it to be used - they were my instructors at Medical School and that's how they told us to study.

If you need an anatomy atlas, I would suggest Netter's.If you need an anatomy book, buy Gray's.If you need a guide to help you as you are physically dissecting in a lab and are given a choice, buy this one!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best, but not bad
Let me start by saying this is not the best book to pick if you want to learn anatomy - it is not meant to. This is, in my opinion, a companion book for Gray's or any other book, and it guides you through an authopsy not teaching you human anatomy.

It is rather good in that, but the fact that it doesn't explains things very much withdraw it a star, though I understand that if it did it would be much larger and not very practical.

I take it the other star because of its bad quality paper. I mean, how is that supposed to hold on an authopsy room, with all the water and blood? It should be printed on better paper.

This is not an essential book, but nice to know what you are doing when seeing your first authopsies. If you have the time to read it and have no other "not essential but nice" books in your list, buy it, ... Read more

Toward the end of the Middle Ages, medical writers and philosophers began to devote increasing attention to what they called "women's secrets," by which they meant female sexuality and generation. At the same time, Italian physicians and surgeons began to open human bodies in order to study their functions and the illnesses that afflicted them, culminating in the great illustrated anatomical treatise of Andreas Vesalius in 1543. Katharine Park traces these two closely related developments through a series of case studies of women whose bodies were dissected after their deaths: an abbess, a lactating virgin, several patrician wives and mothers, and an executed criminal. Drawing on a variety of texts and images, she explores the history of women's bodies in Italy between the late thirteenth and the mid-sixteenth centuries in the context of family identity, religious observance, and women's health care.

Secrets of Women explodes the myth that medieval religious prohibitions hindered the practice of human dissection in medieval and Renaissance Italy, arguing that female bodies, real and imagined, played a central role in the history of anatomy during that time. The opened corpses of holy women revealed sacred objects, while the opened corpses of wives and mothers yielded crucial information about where babies came from and about the forces that shaped their vulnerable flesh. In the process, what male writers knew as the "secrets of women" came to symbolize the most difficult challenges posed by human bodies—challenges that dissection promised to overcome. Park's study of women's bodies and men's attempts to know them—and through these efforts to know their own—demonstrates the centrality of gender to the development of early modern anatomy.

5-0 out of 5 stars very nice book
This book is better than Rhoton neurosurgery. Eazy to identify location of nerve or other strucure. It's nice book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect!
European style (from american authors) neurosurgical book about cranial base surgical approaches (extremely detailed) which is very helpful for everyone. Must be complemented reading Rothon's temporal bone. Visual depiction is flawless, picture size is appropriate, not IMAX :) but those who have even minimal surgical experience will find it useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good!
The book condition and contents are very good.
But the style of the book itself is not so good. The pictures were not big enough that sometimes detailed recognition is not possible.

Product Description

Until 1832, when an Act of Parliament began to regulate the use of bodies for anatomy in Britain, public dissection was regularly—and legally—carried out on the bodies of murderers, and a shortage of cadavers gave rise to the infamous murders committed by Burke and Hare to supply dissection subjects to Dr. Robert Knox, the anatomist.
This book tells the scandalous story of how medical men obtained the corpses upon which they worked before the use of human remains was regulated. Helen MacDonald looks particularly at the activities of British surgeons in nineteenth-century Van Diemen’s Land, a penal colony in which a ready supply of bodies was available. Not only convicted murderers, but also Aborigines and the unfortunate poor who died in hospitals were routinely turned over to the surgeons.
This sensitive but searing account shows how abuses happen even within the conventions adopted by civilized societies. It reveals how, from Burke and Hare to today’s televised dissections by German anatomist Dr. Gunther von Hagens, some people’s bodies become other people’s entertainment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Human Remains
An excellently written book examining the intersections of colonial, indigenous and scientific history on the Australian frontier.

5-0 out of 5 stars The dark side of the History of Medicine
This book is a good account about a rather unknown and dark part of the History of Medicine : the History of Anatomy and Dissection based on the raging way for getting cadavers to dissect. Boddy snatching, grave robbing, burking... You will be dragged into the dregs of the Society and Ethics.

1-0 out of 5 stars Badly flawed
Another blow for ignorance and superstition

One might think that in the 21'st century people would be smarter than they were in poor Dr. Knox's day. Sadly MacDonald shows they aren't. She rails against von Hagen's
public dissections, yet her entire book is noting but a thinly disguised bit of sensationalism using the very thing she decries to sell books. Like a carnival barker she incites the crowd to "come one, come all . . .see the bearded lady. Watch Jo-jo the dog faced boy eat a live chicken and shudder at every disgusting bite . . ."

"Human remains matter" according to MacDonald. What do they matter, other than as food for the worms? What does she think happens to the average corpse? That it's magically imbued with perfume and sealed under glass?

Sorry, but dead is dead. Either the anatomist or the worms get the body.

As for the specious argument about the British Museum bones "filthy with dust, and in a dark cellar" . . .a bit of research would have shown that many museum specimens remain uncatalogued and unexamined for years due to lack of funds and researchers. This does NOT mean the samples are unimportant. A cursory reading on paleontology, archeology or anthropology will show the utility of artifacts and specimens that have lain in a "dark cellar" for decades.

Interesting book, but badly flawed due to the authors bias

5-0 out of 5 stars The Use, But Mostly Abuse, of Cadavers
Just last week, the Natural History Museum in London agreed that it would return the bones and teeth of some seventeen natives of Tasmania. The specimens were collected in the nineteenth century, and will be repatriated, probably for burial or cremation, because the Tasmanian Aboriginal Center made a request for such a return. The museum's trustees agreed to the return, but the museum's scientists don't want to let go of their bones, as they were seen as important to the global scientific community. However, in Human Remains: Dissection and Its Histories (Yale University Press), Helen MacDonald has already shown that the insistence of keeping such specimens to advance the cause of science is disingenuous.Skulls and other bones residing in the British Museum, for instance, are "filthy with dust, and in a dark cellar", and the cataloguing is such that it is difficult even to determine the number of specimens. It is hard to say that such specimens are vital to science if this is how they are kept, but the current keepers are also keeping up a tradition of holding on to skeletons from distant regions as souvenirs.MacDonald's is not a history of human dissection, but rather an examination of some particular instances of what happened to the dead bodies themselves. When doctors work on the dead, they are tinkering with an object that is not like any other."Human remains matter," writes MacDonald, "Every society has conventions for dealing with them in a way that involves regulating who has access to bodies and care in their disposal."And yet, in the England and its colonies of the nineteenth century when most of her stories are set, anatomists and others treated bodies with a shocking professional callousness.

Education and research are sensible justification for using cadavers, but MacDonald shows that much less laudable goals are often at work. For instance, dissection used to be a sort of post-mortem punishment assigned particularly to murderers. The College of Surgeons was assigned any harvest from the noose, and the legal dissections on executed murderers were public, "crafted social events".Crowds would come to see the hanging, and then would jam in to see the body taken apart. The anatomists found that the applause during the dissection would be distracting.Female corpses were especially prized.Mary Paterson was a prostitute whose body was sold by William Burke to an instructor of anatomy in Edinburgh, Robert Knox.Knox's career would end when it was discovered that he was buying cadavers from the infamous Burke and Hare who were turning living people into anatomical specimens prematurely, and indeed Mary Paterson was their third victim. Her body was voluptuous and still pliable, and so the anatomists did ply it into an artistic pose, and she was drawn by an artist before the anatomists had a go.Most of the stories which MacDonald, an Australian, tells have to do with anatomizing in Tasmania, or Van Diemen's Land as it was known.Certain English gentlemen liked to collect bones, especially skulls: "In Britain, collecting human bones was a kind of mid-Victorian mania, shared by amateurs and professionals alike."Such specimens were amassed in order to buttress the idea that different races were different species, and of course that Britons were the best among them. The final section of the book is about what happened after the death of the supposedly last Tasmanian native, and how while the body was in the hospital morgue, a surgeon covertly cut out the skull to steal, while substituting another one into the emptied head of the cadaver. So onward marched science.

MacDonald makes clear that we still are trying to define exactly how bodies stop being persons and become objects. She describes the now-famous exhibits by Dr. Gunther von Hagens, who "plastinates" bodies (a way of colorfully embalming them) to put them on public display. She also describes how von Hagens performed a public dissection in London four years ago, a performance she attended even though such dissections were outlawed almost two centuries ago.Von Hagens insisted to his crowd, "I stand here for democracy," just as other anatomists had claimed some sort of higher ground in previous centuries.MacDonald's gruesome and amusing book shows that such high-minded words about the use of cadavers have not always matched the truth.

Product Description

This brilliantly illustrated manual is a road map for the surgeon who wishes to perform a dissection exercise on the neck in the anatomic theatre. It guides the reader step by step through the cervical structures, the aim being to improve his/her technical skills in surgical practice in the operating room. This book is divided into sections, beginning with the most superficial structures, and then progressing to the deepest planes. The structures warranting the most surgical-anatomic attention and interest are identified. Regional "visits" are supported by concise, reader-friendly reference to normal human anatomy, physiology, practical indications, and tips on operating techniques. Special attention is given to oncological matters of the neck, as this is the prevalent interest of the author. Visible demonstration of the proposed dissection exercise is available on the accompanying video DVD. This guide offers valuable support to all surgeons for the identification of relevant and significant anatomical neck structures, and therefore helps to improve surgical skills and avoid surgical complications.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear and Concise Introduction to Java
One of the worst qualities of computer books is their length. For some reason most books decide to talk about functions for 189 pages and what an integer is for 35. This book offers a clear introduction to the java language and manages to be less than an inch thick. The book is very well formatted and ordered and is pretty pleasant to read. And thankfully it is content to give one good sized example rather than 6 long cryptic ones.
However it is not an effective advanced reference. It fails to talk about RMI, JNI and reflection which are very useful advanced concepts that I would like to hear about from these authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for people with some programming experience!
This is a superb book for novice with some programming knowledge. It's not for those that picked up a programming book for the very first time - in another word, a virgin.

The book stands out in term of example explaination. Greatly recommended by a computer science student! UCSC RULES!!

1-0 out of 5 stars programming book for programmers
Just wanted to let some consumers know that this book is a programming book written for programmers.Unless you have had previous experience with programming (and a strong programmer at that) this book will be somewhat difficult to understand and follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Java
I used this book to learn Java and found it very clear. It provides more of an introduction to programming than Sun's online tutorial. If you are already familiar with programming in C++, you can probably skip the firstfew chapters. The more advanced topics in the rest of the book prepares youto effectively use Sun's online tutorial for the more specialized uses ofJava.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is here and browsable.
The book is available and as the author I would suggest you come to cse.ucsc.edu/~pohl and look for the first three chapters which are downloadable as pdf to see if this suits your taste. Key features areteaching by dissection, just like my other books; several advanced examplesusing SWING and threading with a great introduction to synchronizationlargely written byCharlie McDowell an expert in this area; and our ownterminal IO package. ...
