5-0 out of 5 stars Great
The book came as they said it would, and in a very timely manner, not to mention, it came from over seas. No Complaints, just respect.

3-0 out of 5 stars good information said in too many paragraphs
For an undergraduate chemical engineering student, this book has many useful charts of utility costs, safety indices, etc.About those charts, I can only say good things, because it feels a lot better citing a textbook than citing web pages all the time. The other information in the book is useful, but not presented in a useful way.I cannot read this book word by word. It's too dry. What I would rather read is a bulleted list in each chapter with definitions and examples of things like HAZOP and fault tree analysis.Because really, when I finish my design class and I need to look up information on some design principal, I'm going to want an easy to read bulleted list, not a paragraph.I think this book could have about one third the pages that way, which would make it more readable and useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Seriver
The book came very fast and it was exactly like it was described.

3-0 out of 5 stars How Engineers Get From Thought to Thing customer review
I have gotten this book for a book project in a sophomore physical science class. At first I wasn't very thrilled about the book because I didn't know how complicated it would be to read. On the other hand, I was looking forward to learning about how engineers really do get from thought to thing. Before ordering this book I wanted to know some part of the process of engineers and what goes through their mind when thinking of a certain invention and actually putting it to use. Henry Petroski does a good job in the beginning introduction by explaining engineering ideas and making points on what goes through an engineers mind. Petroski does a good job in his overall outline of the book and how he creates a type of novel that involves simple examples. Petroski talks about a paper clip in his first chapter. I don't know any object that could be more simplistic than a paper clip. What I thought was interesting was that Petroski focused more on the history and about the paper clip than I would have expected. I wasn't reading this book so I could learn about the history of aluminum cans and zippers, I was expecting to learn a certain process that engineers go by and have in mind with all objects. I would recommend this book to anybody interested in the engineering career and history of great engineers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Detailed and Interesting
This book was very thought provoking and showed me the immense amount of time and revision it takes to create a simple, everyday product. It helped me realize how small and mostly overlooked items, are complex and wonderfully designed.
A paper clip, for example, is only a small piece of wire, cut to the right length, and bent into the appropriate shape.Yet it took years of progress and revision to create the most cost effective and visually appealing product. The first metal paper clips were called "Gems".They were larger and required more metal to produce.Today, engineers have designed a smaller paper clip that only loses only 2% of its gripping ability, yet uses 1/3 less metal.
Pencil lead is another example. It was originally so fragile that writing with it was almost useless.Different methods of cutting the lead and covering it with different materials have helped this problem.Lead will always break, but reducing the frequency helps to make writing with it more efficient and less frustrating.
Zippers are another interesting invention that took a long time to develop but were very effective once used.Instead of having to button and button, tie and untie, or hook and unhook, zippers allow you to simply pull up to put together or pull down to take apart.Although there are shortcomings of this product, such as getting stuck or being uneven, they greatly changed how people think about fastening clothes or other items, such as plastic bags.
These are only three examples. He continues on to inform about more complex products such as aluminum cans, airplanes, and bridges. Each of the topics he explains helps show how engineering plays such an important role in everyday lives.I recommend this book to whoever is interested in engineering or is interested how things around them came to be, have been improved, and now are incorporated into our everyday lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth Reading
The author of this book starts out by saying, "As simple as familiar objects may seem at first glance, their conception, development, manufacturing and marketing may pose great difficulties". He goes on to prove that this is true by citing the histories of some very familiar items.

His first example is the ordinary paper clip. Literally hundreds of improvement patents have been issued, yet it is still not "perfected". The most common clip was given its present form by a company called Gem Ltd. in the last century and is still referred to in the industry as the "Gem" clip. Inventors are still trying to overcome its negative features. The author lists several shortcomings such as its tendency to tear paper, requiring its loops to be spread when clipping on, and its habit of slipping off thick stacks of paper.

Next he considers the common wood-cased pencil. When wax was added to the lead for smoother writing and added to the wood for easier sharpening, the lead often separated from the wood and would break when the pencil was used or even when dropped. Etching the lead surface and coating it with a suitable chemical solved this problem. However, overcoming the BOPP (Broken-Off Pencil Point) problem has not been as easy. Understanding why points fracture as they do is far from as simple as you might think.

His next case history is that of the zipper. In patent literature, they go back to 1851! The description of its evolution is fascinating. There is a great sketch of the tooling that applies the zipper teeth to the fabric.

The author notes how ideas often come unexpectedly -- but usually to individuals who can see the idea's potential. He relates how de Mestral, after walking his dog in the Alpine woodlands, saw cockleburs on his trousers and on his dog's fur -- and saw the potential for what became Velcro.

Yet another captivating case history is the section on plastic zippers. He details the story from an inventor in Denmark, to British investors, to refugees from Romania, to a Japanese inventor who extruded tubular film with grips -- which became the familiar Ziplock.

The author notes how the acronym, MAYA, has become the buzz term for designers. It stands for Most Advanced Yet Acceptable. In other words, if your invention is too different from present designs, it may not find acceptance.

The history of aluminum cans provides fodder for another exciting chapter. Here is a product that must use a very minimum of material and still safely resist 100 pounds per square inch of pressure. However, it must readily "fail" when the pop-top is actuated. Some 100 billion(!) beverage cans are made each year. Think what a design savings of a few percent of aluminum would be worth to the industry.

The sketch of Alexander Bain's facsimile machine of 1843 will shake up those who think the fax machine is the latest thing in technology. In this rundown on the evolution of the fax, the author notes how consumers often decide the winning technology. He cites the victory of the VHS video cassette over the technically better (picture quality) of the Beta cassette.

When inventing and engineering, the human factor must never be forgotten. A computer-controlled airplane crashed because a pilot mistook a rate-of-descent display reading of 33 for 3.3!

That an art is old and simple does not mean design caution is not required. A Roman aquaduct in 97 AD delivered 40 million gallons of water daily to Rome. Yet when New York's World Trade Center, 110 stories high, was completed in 1973, it was found that the water pressure was not high enough to properly flush toilets on the observation deck!

There are no equations or computations in this book -- it is an easy read. It beautifully conveys the lesson that there are no "simple" inventions -- and no such thing as "routine" designing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting, but a bit slow and drawn out.
Invention by design is a complex book written about simple everyday things we use. Things like paper clips, aluminum cans, mechanical pencils, zippers, airplanes, bridges, and more. The Author, Henry Petroski did a very good job on writing about all of these objects. The book goes on to explain the nature of the design, engineering, and concepts put behind the objects.

Pros: Very Interesting
Good information
Very Descriptive
Ideas and concepts never thought of to be use in the
everyday items.

Cons: Very Slow and Drawn out.
At times can be a bit boring

Overall Review: A- book. Many good facts and alot of useful
information. A tiny bit slow, but overall, a good
read.

Recommendations: I would recommend this book to a friend who may
be interested in any basic form of Engineering,
like myself.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable and great teaching book!
Want to know the facts behind the everyday things we use?Invention by Design, by Henry Petroski, is a very interesting book.It explains how items used by people daily were thought of and created. This book explains how familiar items such as paper clips, aluminum cans, zippers, mechanical pencils, bridges, buildings, and more were constructed.Invention by Design also describes how certain inventions and constructions were improved though the years by different inventors and engineers.
I thought this book was very good and interesting, especially since I enjoy studying and learning about mechanical, civil, and architectural engineering.I would recommend this book to anyone, but someone with no interest in engineering may not find this book to be very enjoyable. On a ten point scale I would give Invention by Design an eight.I give it an eight because some objects that Petroski describes are not very complex, and in my opinion not worth discussing. That made certain parts of this book a little boring. ... Product Description
An essential guide for design engineers who use the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) during the product development process, this book turns the FEA into a productivity tool that will help to avoid costly and potentially dangerous mistakes. During the 50 years of its development, FEA evolved from an exotic analysis method accessible only to specialized analysts into a mainstream engineering tool. Phenomenal progress in computer hardware and operating systems combined with similar progress in computer-aided design made FEA the tool of choice for design engineers, who now use it during the product design process. Many books have been written about FEA, however very little FEA literature takes a middle ground approach and specifically addresses the needs of design engineers who use FEA as an everyday design tool. This book attempts to fill that void by focusing on an understanding of FEA fundamentals, which are explained through simple and intuitive examples that can be used by any engineer. This book also takes a practical approach, characteristic to the attitudes of design engineers, and offers readers an opportunity to try all discussed topics by solving downloadable exercises using either their own FEA software or the commercial FEA software StressCheck®, which is licensed for free to readers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introductory Users Guide to FEA
This is basically a non-mathematical treatment of finite element analysis (FEA) that gives the reader an overall understanding of what it is and can do for them as well as general rules of how to use an FEA application. The book is a kind of a users guide for the novice on how to setup, solve, and interpret the results of a problem using commercial FEA software. The author discusses proper methodology and common pitfalls to avoid. The design or project engineer with mechanical design responsiblities and little previous knowledge of FEA will likely benefit most from reading this book. Experienced users of commercial FEA code(s) or analysts will likely find this text of little practical benefit. ... Read more

Product Description
The tools and technique used in the Design of Experiments (DOE) have been proved successful in meeting the challenge of continuous improvement over the last 15 years. However, research has shown that applications of these techniques in small and medium-sized manufacturing companies are limited due to a lack of statistical knowledge required for their effective implementation. Although many books have been written in this subject, they are mainly by statisticians, for statisticians and not appropriate for engineers.

Design of Experiments for Engineers and Scientists overcomes the problem of statistics by taking a unique approach using graphical tools. The same outcomes and conclusions are reached as by those using statistical methods and readers will find the concepts in this book both familiar and easy to understand. The book treats Planning, Communication, Engineering, Teamwork and Statistical Skills in separate chapters and then combines these skills through the use of many industrial case studies. Design of Experiments forms part of the suite of tools used in Six Sigma.

Key features:
* Provides essential DOE techniques for process improvement initiatives
* Introduces simple graphical techniques as an alternative to advanced statistical methods - reducing time taken to design and develop prototypes, reducing time to reach the market
* Case studies place DOE techniques in the context of different industry sectors
* An excellent resource for the Six Sigma training program

This book will be useful to engineers and scientists from all disciplines tackling all kinds of manufacturing, product and process quality problems and will be an ideal resource for students of this topic.

Dr Jiju Anthony is Senior Teaching Fellow at the International Manufacturing Unit at Warwick University. He is also a trainer and consultant in DOE and has worked as such for a number of companies including Motorola, Vickers, Procter and Gamble, Nokia, Bosch and a large number of SMEs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to DOE
This is a good introduction to DOE with plenty of case studies and minimal statistics. It is the first book that I've read on DOE. The second chapter was a little confusing, with concepts such as design resolution introduced with little explanation of their significance. These concepts became clearer as I delved into the case studies, and by the end of the book I had a good grasp of the subject. A few things still mystify me, such as where the reference line in a Pareto plot comes from. It's calculated automatically by software of course, but I wish I understood the underlying maths, which goes unexplained. Still, this book will get you off the ground fast - I read it in two days.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true book for Practitioners and Academicians
This book provides insight into various aspects of design of experiments. Design of experiment is a powerful tool, which is used for process planning, designing and analyzing the experiment, and to obtain effective and efficient conclusion. Author has exploited his industrial and academic experience to provide detailed analysis of design of experiment with examples and hence this book is at centre stage for Decision Makers (DM). On studying this book, DM (engineers and managers) can easily apply design of experiment to real world problems and explore the influence of each and every parameter on the process performance.
This book is comprised of 9 sections, each presenting various aspects of design of experiments. First section addresses the introduction to DOE, which stresses on importance on experimentation in an organization. Second section discusses fundamentals of DOE with a framework to develop a measurement system and quality characteristics for industrial experiments. Section 3 illustrates the significance of interaction of process parameters, and provides graphical tools to handle them. Fourth section illustrates the concrete steps to plan, design, conduct and analyze the industrially designed experiments. Section 5 presents screening design, used for exploring, and discovers their influence on the process performance. Section 6 discusses the use of full factorial designs at 2 levels in industrial experiments and how to analyze and interpret the results of experiments using graphical tools generated by Mini tab software. Section 7 points out the importance to construct fractional factorial experiments. In section eight key points are depicted for making successful experiments. Last section provides eight real life industrial problems to illustrate the power of DOE.
One of the key facets of this book is enclosure of number of case studies, which exploits the capability to build knowledge base on design of experiments. This book also bridges the gap between real life problem and research work using design of experiments.
This book will be of great interest to students and researchers, who are most of the time aware of the existing theories but not conversant to select the best method or the value of process parameter which has significant effect on the performance metrics of the system. The book is well structured and contains ample case materials, reflective questions, and references to promote future research in this area. The book is easy to read, and likely to find its way on to the desk of practitioners, students and researchers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for both industrial and academic use
"Design of Experiments for Engineers and Scientists" is a well written and easily understandable text on the subject of practical experimental design considerations.Whether you are a practicing engineer in business or an instructor at an academic institution, I think that you will find this to be an excellent introductory textbook. It is simple enough for an engineer that does not have an extensive statistical or mathematical background to read through once, grasp the concepts and be able to apply experimental design techniques to improve his company's performance. The graphical presentations are very helpful in this regard. It is also detailed enough to use in a graduate course to introduce engineers to the subject of practical experimental design techniques.Having held a variety of industrial engineering positions from process engineer to member of the Board of Directors before returning to academia, I feel that I am well qualified to judge the value of this book.I have taught a graduate class in experimental design techniques for several years at a major university and will include this as a text for my future classes.Being a consultant in the areas of Six Sigma, and Lean Six Sigma, I feel this text will also be very useful for my industrial clients as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars Jiju Antony Design of Experiments for Engineers & Scientists
"This is a Must-Have Concise Textbook for individuals wishing to understand the essence and essentials of the Design of Experiments (DOE) subject matter in a minimum of time. For its relatively smaller size and greater depth of coverage, the textbook is excellent, providing a clear, concise and very effective treatment of the useful and revealing body of knowledge composing DOE. For emphasis, the text explains fundamental DOE concepts effectively, while the breadth of topics coverage is very rich. High school and college students, scientists and engineers, professionals and researchers all alike, can deploy the techniques presented in this DOE text to deepen their understanding of processes with particular respect to experimental process variables effects, their magnitudes and interactions; furthermore the textbook provides direction for the optimization of the processes being studied."

This is a great reference. Almost all of the circuit design gotcha's, brief explanations of the theories involved and proper design techniques to help reduce or avoid their negative effects are in this easy to read short book. Did I mention that it is well indexed? It is.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent review
It's a fast shipping with very good condition, just like the seller mentioned before purchasing. No trouble, no worry. It's convenient.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book for the designer
Really good content,. You will not be disappointed. Im an RF design engineer who needs to work with lots of digital interface control circuitry. Its not an analog book that will give you ccts for designing, but rather give you great insights into things like grounding, board layout etc. These are not tricks but experience gather from years of real world design. get it to complement an analog design book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful
Surely a good companion on electronic design. Keep it in drawer of your desk: sooner or later, you'll need it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Practical Handbook
Excellent book. Well-written and full of practical examples and advice -- not just what to do, but what not to do, as well.

Everything from avoiding ground-loops and calculating transmission-line effects on a PCB, to transistor characteristics and how to build a proper biasing two-transistor buffer. I found the transmission-line rules of thumb especially insightful.

The clever use of a length of wire to turn a rising edge into a short pulse is representative of the little tidbits that convey not just theoretical, but practical understanding.

Easy to read with plenty of diagrams, but no fluff here -- everything is concise and to the point. Introductory descriptions of components and their uses are followed by a discussion of their limitations and considerations for use in a circuit.

There's even a 17 page discussion of the limitations and design considerations for those considering using a microcontroller in your design. Excellent overview for circuit designers and those not yet intimately familiar with the capabilities of the latest microcontrollers. Although he calls assembler language "the microcontroller's own code" (which, in actuality, contains a superset of the microcontroller instructions that get mapped by the assembler), this section is otherwise accurate and shows a deep understanding of the issues involved, including a thorough discussion of the importance of a watchdog timer and how to add one, if not included in the microcontroller.

The end of the Analog IC section (Op-Amps, Comparators, and Voltage References) contains warnings about modeling op-amps. For example: "Models cannot capture a device's every sensitivity to supply variations..." and "slew rate and overshoot are especially difficult to model." He gives good advice on how to do initial rough modeling, but to always breadboard/prototype and take advantage of the embedded knowledge already contained in an evaluation board from the manufacturer. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed
The book is embarassing. I was looking for a reference text to update my knowledge of solar engineering, and what I got was a confusing conglomeration of project descriptions, uninformative, 'shallow' system descriptions, vendor data and pictures, green politics, and a lot of filler. The filler turned me off within minutes of cracking the book. Things like 25 plus pages of lat long data for cities around the world, and lists of 'sustainable energy suppliers and consultants' (that may have been useful when the book was published, but decays exponentially with time since.) The author presents 'facts' that are nothing but erroneous hyperbole representing political opinions rather than engineering concepts or application. Throughout the book, efficiency is a concept that no longer is mathematically or physically defined consistently. Thermal plants are inefficient because they obey the 2nd law (34%), but solar conversion efficiencies are not an issue (rarely approaching 20%)

Illustrations are simplistic, photographs are more artistic than technically illustrative. There are dozens of illustrations of how to bolt metal together or to roofs - none of which are useful. Entire sections appear to have been written for and lifted from 'gee-whiz' pamphlets or displays rather than an engineering reference book, things like information on half-flush lavatories and landscaping (pg 201) and museum displays and software to generate them (pg 78).

Look elsewhere for technically useful information. The net and a search engine will provide much more useful and current information. Luckily I still have my solar engineering course notes from the late 70s and because they provide much more useful information than this '...Engineer's Complete Design Resource.' Hopefully there is a good book out there for me, but this one isn't it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Bought as text
I bought this book as a required text for a Design of Experiments (DOE) class. The explanations are pretty straight forward. Answers to problems are in back of the book, a plus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Title says it all
This book is a great introduction to ballanced orthogonal experimental designs. The so-called Scientific Method (tweak one parameter while holding the other variables fixed) is not used that much where there are complicated interactions between variables. This Designed Experimental (DOX) approach is used more frequently in the Semiconductor industry. This approach envolves a series of experiments where all the variables are potentially changed form one trial to another, but in such a way that one can resolved the effects of one variable from another AND understand interactions and non-linear effects. It is simply the best way to optimize a complicated system.

OK, if you have SAS or RS/1 or ...packages you may ask yourself "why bother learning the theory." I would say for 2 reasons - if you need to manually intervene or supplement an existing experiment AND seeing some more designs that are very effecient (John's 3/4 designs and Plackett-Burman designs) for initial screening that is not ususally part of the packages.

Compared to Box, Box, Hunter this book is easier to read, has a huge summary fold out sheet and is geared to a practicing engineer or scientist not a professional mathematician. Best introduction and most likely the only book you will ever need on the subject. ... Read more

Use Real-World Test and Measurement Techniques to Systematically Eliminate Signal Integrity Problems

This is the industry’s most comprehensive, authoritative, and practical guide to modern Signal Integrity (SI) test and measurement for high-speed digital designs. Three of the field’s leading experts guide you through systematically detecting, observing, analyzing, and rectifying both modern logic signal defects and embedded system malfunctions. The authors cover the entire life cycle of embedded system design from specification and simulation onward, illuminating key techniques and concepts with easy-to-understand illustrations.

Writing for all electrical engineers, signal integrity engineers, and chip designers, the authors show how to use real-time test and measurement to address today’s increasingly difficult interoperability and compliance requirements. They also present detailed, start-to-finish case studies that walk you through commonly encountered design challenges, including ensuring that interfaces consistently operate with positive timing margins without incurring excessive cost; calculating total jitter budgets; and managing complex tradeoffs
    in high-speed serial interface design.

    Coverage includes

    • Understanding the complex signal integrity issues that arise in today’s high-speed designs
    • Learning how eye diagrams, automated compliance tests, and signal analysis measurements can help you identify and solve SI problems
    • Reviewing the electrical characteristics of today’s most widely used CMOS IO circuits
    • Performing signal path analyses based on intuitive Time-Domain Reflectometry (TDR) techniques
    • Achieving more accurate real-time signal measurements and avoiding probe problems and artifacts
    • Utilizing digital oscilloscopes and logic analyzers to make accurate measurements in high-frequency environments
    • Simulating real-world signals that stress digital circuits and expose SI faults

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference Book
Out of Bruhn and Niu this is a book that I didn't knew and surprise me

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide for Design Engineers
The title says what this book is all about. It's a book with practical stress analysis for design engineers.

If you're into doing practical things, this is a great guide.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good in some topics, missing others
Good basic book for A/C structures, but its missing some very important topics such as torsion. Many better books that cover many more topics, such as A/C Structures by Perry (1950).

Whats very nice is the diagrams of the problems. Unlike many books they are not overly simplified and may give confidence in tackling real structures.

Could be a good beginners book for A/C structures

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book and course
I am taking Flabel's course using this book and it's excellent and well worth the money.Anyone that works in aircraft stress analysis should learn these fundamental analysis techniques, they're as practical and valuable as you'll find. A little tip:we're running out of aircraft engineers who can do hand calcs- learn the classical methods in this book and others (Peery, etc) and you will be guaranteed a well paying job for life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical! Absolutely
Mr. Flabel's book is filled with actual answers to aircraft engineers (metals...sorry future 7E7 folks). In general, it is a "how to" book - answering questions in a straightforward and practical way. It doesn't start with a 'blob' and formulate idealized differential equations that can't be solved in practical application. Many topics provide a working and adaquate examination of the mechanics at hand, and provide one if not several methods of solutions - including worked-out examples. I work as an engineer for an airline, designing repairs primarily, and have found a great deal of use for this book (in fact, it was recommended to me by a major A/C mfg engineer during a training course). ... Amazon.com Review
The moral of this book is that behind every great engineeringsuccess is a trail of often ignored (but frequently spectacular)engineering failures. Petroski covers many of the best known examplesof well-intentioned but ultimately failed design in action -- the galloping Tacoma Narrows Bridge (whichyou've probably seen tossing cars willy-nilly in the famousblack-and-white footage), the collapse of the Kansas City HyattRegency Hotel walkways -- and many lesser known but equallyinformative examples. The line of reasoning Petroski develops in thisbook were later formalized into his quasi-Darwinian model oftechnological evolution in The Evolution of Useful Things, but thisbook is arguably the more illuminating -- and defintely the moreenjoyable -- of these two titles. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An interesting read for technical and history buffs
I originally read this book in 1992, lost the book, and found myself quoting stories so often that i decided to purchase it again!Thisis a great read for anyone who is interested in history or engineering. The stories are well told, with sufficient explanation of technical issues without the need of a PhD to understand the root cause of some the greatest engineering disasters in history. I highly recommend this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but thankfully it's a short book
I read this book based on a recommendation from another book that ranked the top 100 business books. After completing it, I did learn a lot more about the engineering profession and I do have a lot of respect for them now. But the book did repeat it's examples a bit too much and could have been an even shorter. Again, some great examples of real life problems dealing with engineering, but I'm not sure it's worth your time to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The title says it all
Henry Petroski is a highly respected professor and author writing about the failures of bridges, buildings and similar civil engineering works. Engineering design is a noble profession. It brings us many great and useful technologies. But, engineering has its limits. Unfortunately, limits may be difficult to see in advance of catastrophic failure. This book reminds us that we must never stop improving our methods of design both from technological as well as human perspectives. It is a classic on engineering design and failure and every engineer should read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Highly topical and very informative. If you are an engineer with 20+ years experience or a laymen seeking to learn more about the role of failure in design, this is a terrific read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Being Human
To Engineer is Human To Engineer Is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Designis a wonderful read, for all the reasons in other reviews posted here (and elsewhere I'm sure) and more. DISCLAIMER: I am not an engineer, nor do I play one on television or YouTube.

I picked up this book because of its subtitle "the role of failure in successful design." What could I learn from another discipline's perspective on successes and failures in creating a product?I think if readers come at Petroski's work from this angle (and many have, do, and will) the self-reflective dissection of why things don't work, go wrong, or prove fatal is a necessary skill and habit for anyone walking among the rest of the human population (as well as our animal and environmental cohabitants). Whether it is labeled critical thinking or something else (self-improvement in reverse perhaps), this is a good introduction to "being human" - the first chapter.

One of the major lessons either in school or in life is to learn from our missteps, mistakes, and misadventures. Easier said than done. Aside from the medical or nuclear professions perhaps the many facets of engineering is equally important. For instance, I came away learning from Petroski a little bit more about walkways, railroad bridges, and other things that occasionally fall down - and why, and the things around us that do not (and why). The lesson, as every student of history (rightly or wrongly) concedes on some level to Santayana's aphorism on repetitive consequences, is simply hopefully we learn from our mistakes and do better the next time around. As I think about this I wish I could find my copy of Robert Fulghum's All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.

Perhaps the ironic (or iconic) jewel of this book on engineering failures is the one that should have failed but didn't: the Crystal Palace. I won't spoil the chapter for you, although the story like some many others, including the opening collapse of the Kansas City Hyatt Regency Hotel skywalks, is one of the recurring themes throughout To Engineer is Human. Simply, the idea was to create a temporary structure for the 1851 Great Exhibition in London. This temporary structure lasted in some form, however, until finally demolished in 1940. The longevity of this structure notwithstanding, this is not a dry rehash of a building. As with all the chapters in this slim book, there is a moral to this story - and a lesson for more than engineers. The moral, of the book as well, is that "[t]he object of engineering design is to obviate failure, but the truly fail-proof design is chimerical" (217).

How do we prevent failure if it is a moving target? After almost thirty years, Petroski's wonderful book is a good starting place and surely a "successful design" by the standards of the essays and ideas circulating in this book. I recommend this book for everyone with a general interest in figuring things out. Whether it's actual engineering (including software), or simply gaining a more reflective view of other career paths, To Engineer Is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design is as thought-provoking as it is entertaining. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars This is not the usual book written by a consultant
Usually the book written by consultants keep some of the most important aspect of the technique on which they are writing or do not give all the infomation so that you have to call them to do the job. This is not the case with this book. Mr. Lee just put everything he knows about facilities design in this book in a way that can be easily followed by any one interested in doing facilities and workplace design. Areas for improvement in the book are related to the quality of some of the charts that I found a little difficult to read because of the small font size used. Nevertheless, this is a fault of the publisher and not of the author. 5-0 out of 5 stars more than one eighth the price of a VW Beetle..
... was the asking price for Philbrick's P2 amplifier module. It started out [...] in 1960 but demand was too strong. So they upped the price[...]. Discover the inside story behind why this little brick with a mere 7 transistors defied replication by competitors in the instrumentation field for so long. This story is indeed the stuff of legends, told to us by Bob Pease who worked with the original designer of the P2, Bob Malter. Spellbinding for us analogue geeks, and just one absorbing chapter of this wide-ranging book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Eccentric as analog designer
For people who are not already into analog design, this book only mystifies the subject further. It presents analog design with an aura of eccentricity and a feeling of more artistry than engineering. This is an eclectic collection of articles, but among them there are a few gems.Paul Brokaw's description of linear IC design is by far the best exposition I've seen.Jim Williams' Zoo Circuit makes interesting reading into the mind of the designer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tribute
you into Analog ? You got to have this book. Its a tribute to the LEGENDS. Legends that ever were, that ever will be. My boyhood favourite of almost 10 years. Dont miss it on the analog shelf. I would deem it blasphemy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Reviewer from Salt Lake is right on
I agree completely with the reviewer from SLC: there are some interesting insights, but too much ego invested in personal memoirs and irrelevant anecdotes of personal history.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Look At The Rhythm Of Analog Design
Analysis is a science: there's a right answer out there, and we can all agree when it's found.Troubleshooting is the same way: when the broken bit is found and fixed, the circuit starts working properly.

Design, on the other hand, is an art; there's always more than one way to do it, and the individuality of the designer has a strong influence on the way the design turns out: hence "Art, Science, and Personalities".

This isn't to say that a good designer does unusual things without a good reason, or adds expensive bells and whistles because he happens to like them. What it means is that for designs that are not routine, the designer's personality has a lot to do with how it comes out.

To become an expert designer, you need a well-developed technical taste.Once you have a design that works at some level, it's that sour feeling in the back of your mouth that will tell you that it isn't right yet, that it can be simpler, cheaper, or more reliable. There aren't a lot of other sources of that information.

Arts are taught by apprenticeship. But where are you going to go to get taught this stuff nowadays?EE departments are going more and more to software, as shown by the vast number of graduate EEs who don't know which end of a soldering iron to hold.Jim Williams can't be everybody's mentor, but in this informal (and sometimes whimsical) book, he and his friends show us how the best analogue designers in the business go about things. You know what? One of the most important elements in the art of design is *play*.

Maybe listening in on these guys playing at being analogue designers isn't quite the same as sitting elbow-to-elbow with them, but it's as close as most of us are going to get, and it's terrifically valuable.I recommend this book to anyone who wants to become a better analogue designer, and who is not easily put off by whimsy in technical writing.(I find it refreshing and fun, myself.)I've owned this book for 6 or 7 years, and it's about ready to fall apart from rereading. ... Based on familiar circuit theory and basic physics, this book serves as an invaluable reference for both analog and digital engineers alike. For those who work with analog RF, this book is a must-have resource. With computers and networking equipment of the 21st century running at such high frequencies, it is now crucial for digital designers to understand electromagnetic fields, radiation and transmission lines. This knowledge is necessary for maintaining signal integrity and achieving EMC compliance. Since many digital designers are lacking in analog design skills, let alone electromagnetics, an easy-to-read but informative book on electromagnetic topics should be considered a welcome addition to their professional libraries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Suitable for beginners.
I found this book to be an excellent primer to the topic. Finally, a book that will hold your hand through some of the "fundementals."

I would strongly recommend this book for any non eletrical engineer wanting to understand this material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really close to a "must have" for the engineering library
Say what you will, but even the EMC/EMI "guru type" person gets confused once in awhile on the complexities of electromagnetics. So that leaves us "little people" in need of a handy, precise and basic-to-advanced "explainer" to get us back on track. I'm fairly seasoned on EMC but I really like this book and carry it with me quite often on trips for handy reference. It certainly provides for the "big picture" while still adding significant depth. Especially for the beginner to intermediate this book is highly recommended. I have this suspicion the advanced persons don't have it far away either! Congratulations to the author. Perhaps he will follow up with an advanced version on select topics.

3-0 out of 5 stars An easy to read book , so?
The author has succeeded in writing an easy to read book.I read through it in two days. But is it useful and worthy keeping? The author covers a lot of ground, even included a cursory introduction to special relativity and quantum electrodynamics which have no relevance to the rest of the book.It gives a relatively painless introduction to various concepts in electromagnetism. But the superficiality makes it a book for the popular audience rather than electrical engineers. The author does have the good sense to include a set of good references. So read the book once, and study the reference books. The book is not worthy keeping.I've sold mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice integration of diverse topics
I'd characterize this book as qualitative rather than quantitative. It provides good verbal descriptions for a wide variety of concepts related to electromagnetics. For me, it tied together a lot of lose ends. This book works pretty well for someone who has a moderate grasp of the electromagnetic fundamentals and wants to go to the next level of understanding without becoming mired in equations -- maybe a sort of heavy duty tutorial for students, recent graduates, and just-plain-curious technically oriented people. This is one of those must-read books, but I would not recommend it to someone without knowldge of college-level physics and differential calculus. ...
