Best of both worlds
I bought the Kindle version of this book knowing full well that the photos would not be in color. It was an experiment in simplifying. With my Kindle I don't have overflowing bookshelves and I thought that it might be convenient to have the book and patterns it contains with me along with my other reading material.

I've found that it's pretty easy to navigate through the book and read it of course. The pictures, even zoomed, are not that great...but I decided I could put up with it. I just wanted to learn Tunisian crochet.

As far as the book and the technique--I am pretty good at regular crochet and found the book is clear and the projects interesting. The author explains the steps and it may seem repetitious when she repeats the steps for each stitch but if you are skipping from one to the other stitch in the learning process this actually helps keep from flipping back and forth...oh wait, no pages with the Kindle.

Today I realized that with Kindle for iPhone I can have the color pictures, too! They enlarge really well to show stitch detail in luscious color.

So that makes it the best of both worlds when purchasing a book of this type for Kindle. Although I don't really like reading regular books on the iPhone, it's great for this use!

There is no substitute for the look and feel of knitting
Any book that pretends to have the look of knitting from crochet is bogus by definition.
Crochet is thick and does not drape. It uses a minimum of 1/3 more yarn depending on stitch choice.

Tunisian crochet is even thicker than ordinary crochet and makes a stiff, unflattering fabric when finished.

It is a neat technique that has been around forever. It makes a thick and very regular rectilinear fabric. The classic application used to be afghans based on all black or all white yarn squares which one later embroidered with cross stitch flowers to decorate.

It remains unsuited to making garments no matter how lovely the book or its instructions are.

Great book-you need great tools!
LOVE this book and the stitches!For those having problems finding proper tools, hooks, etc., please look for Symfonie wood interchangeable afghan/tunisian crochet hooks which are available only in Europe but available to us via a lady who sells on Ebay... and the shipping is superfast!I also have the plastic variety... but these wooden hooks have made my work so much more accurate.Now, we just need more patterns!

I take issue with the author's assertion that Tunisian crochet has "the look of knitting - with the ease of crochet".First off, it doesn't look like knitting; at least not to a knitter.Second, if you truly want the look of knitting, knit whatever it is you are making.And lastly, "ease" comes with practice; I find my knitting as easy as crocheting because I have chosen to practice.I do not understand why crocheting constantly has to prove its worth alongside knitting or be compared to it.They are two separate techniques, and I consider Tunisian to be yet a third, in spite of its obvious closeness to crochet.Having gotten that off my chest, let's continue with the review.

I really like this book.The pictures and instructions are clear and concise.The photographs of each project include a front and back shot, along with closeups of the pattern stitches.Too many books focus on having wildly modern styling, as if they long for their projects to be in the pages of Vogue magazine.I am exceedingly grateful to the author for bypassing this in favor of showing us the actual projects in such a way as to showcase THEM as opposed to the photography.Thank you.Also there is a wonderful appendix giving information on sizing, industry standard measurements, yarn sizes, and resources.It's short, but contains a true wealth of information sadly lacking in many similar volumes.

The projects themselves are made in lovely yarns and are well blocked and presented."Chain Main Scarf" - rated easy, in Tunisian purl stitch.Simple, yet lovely, worked in two fine yarns."Wild and Wooly Wrap" - an easy shawl in a chunky yarn, in Tunisian simple stitch.I liked the look of this, and I think most would like it, although I am not a fan of chunky garments. "Honeycomb skirt" - intermediate in Tunisian honeycomb stitch.The yarn and stitch used here create a lovely and interesting texture."Shimmer shawl" - an intermediate wrap in various lace stitches.I thought this absolutely gorgeous and plan on making it when I can track down the yarns."Ivory Shell" - an experienced level sleeveless garment with a v neck, in staggered X-stitch.There is some intricate shaping here and it is not for the beginner or the faint of heart; I made this in the recommended yarn - Lion organic cotton - and it was beautiful and well fitting; and the pattern easily followed and correct.

The next garment in the book "Ladders and lattice duster" (experienced level) gives me pause.It looks great in the photos except for the sleeves, which are constructed in single crochet and chain loops.Perhaps it was simply easier to do this than pattern Tunisian sleeves to go with the body, but I think it made the overall effect a bit sloppy.If I make this, I will definitely change the sleeves."Felted clutch" - intermediate - is the Tunisian version of every other simple felted bag going around.I confess I am addicted to felting right now, and tried this to see if it were any easier than a knitted or crocheted bag.The nature of basic Tunisian stitch is to be a strong, tight fabric, and I did find the resultant bag felted very well, quickly, and retained an interesting texture.Some experimentation could produce some fascinating felted fabric textures.

"Warmhearted vest" - intermediate skill in Tunisian knit stitch.It is good looking; but here again is my issue -- it would look better and have ease and stretch if truly knitted.It would also work up tremendously faster.I am curious if non-knitters actually find this worth making? My discomfort with the Tunisian knit stitch carries over for the next garments, "Hugalicious jumper" intermediate for children, and "big sister sweater" intermediate in Tunisian net stitch.All three of these garments seem to rely on asking one thing to be another, and this isn't knitting, nor does it look like it.The garments look sloppy and second best to me.

Then the book moves into home decor.Two pillows, both functional and pretty, two afghans, an ottoman cover (huh?) and place mats."Sweet dreams baby blanket" is my favorite piece in the book.It's exceptionally lovely, in two alternating patterns, and while it takes some time to work up it is well worth the investment.Truly beautiful.

The book works great on many levels, but for me falters when it gets into the whole Tunisian (wanna be) knit stitch.When the author sticks to explaining and exploiting the many wonderful Tunisian stitches and fabrics that can be created with these variants, it's excellent.It doesn't have to look like knitting. It can simply be wonderful and beautiful, and Tunisian.Definitely among the better books available on the subject.

I was disappointed with the projects in this book.It is an inexpensive way to start, but I didn't like any of the results that I got.

Not for the Connoisseur
Most of the items in this booklet are not precisely to scare.For instance, doilies are crocheted with Size 10 crochet thread resulting in a doilies that look like ones for a real house made out of rug yarn.This isan okay place to start if you are an inexperienced crocheter or don't caremuch what the results look like.I have adapted one of the bedspreadpatterns to smaller thread and it is lovely. ... grannies knitting on the go
"On the go" is the optimal phrase here. A small colletion of grannie squares and their respective projects in a small carry-on book. I found it to be a quick study and an even quicker project finder for someone who may not have the time it takes to knit or crochet a large project. Grannies are an expedient method of getting a project done when you only have a few minutes at a time to work on it. I would recommend it to anyone who has a full schedule and still manages to squeeze in a little hobby time into their busy day. The projects are simple and doable leaving the crafter with a sense of accomplishment and the desire to continue doing more of them. The projects themselves make for a nice gift if you so choose.

I love grannies
I'm rewriting this review entirely because at first glance I was unimpressed but after some usage I have decided I do like the book quite a bit. Items include a very open granny poncho, cute hat with braids which can be deleted, very attractive scarf with 12 grannies in one line, ugly skirt in orange and green, bright baby blankie, evening bag, girl's bolero, capelet with grannies at the bottom, pillow (on cover), shrug in Noro Kureyon, tote bag, summer sun hat in cotton, circle bag, another baby blankie in one variegated color, pendant, rings, rectangle tote, cropped cardigan with grannies on one color and trim in a second, Amish afghan which is one huge granny. My favorites are the hats, scarf, bolero and baby blankies but the shrug interests me if I change it to have a front as well. Horrible book if you are interested in knitting.. as there is no knitting in the whole book!Why even have that in the title?
As to crochet... there are no pictures at all.This is not going to help the new crocheter and I would not recommend this

A must have for any awesome crafter
This book is great if you like exactly what the title suggests: crafts far from ordinary.There will be no granny squares or mundane patterns/ recipes to be found in this fantastic book.If you are a little edgy, a lot edgy, or a secret edge fetishist you need this craft book!

If you want to intarsia freaking skulls on *everything* then this is the book for you.Stick to the site - the book is a waste of money.The only cool project was the diva cup holder and I'm a dude.

Awesome! I love it!
I have been a follower of the AntiCraft ezine for a couple of years now and I've made several items. But I hadn't dropped in for a few months so when I did finally get around to it I was amazed to discover they had a book! I couldn't wait to order it and did so as soon as one of my money spells brought in a little extra. :P It arrived today and when I saw it in my mail box I did a little dance of joy. As soon as I was safely indoors, had drawn the curtains and distracted the munchkins with an episode of She-Ra I curled up with a mug of tea in my favorite chair and have read it cover to cover. I loved the tentacles drawn just for me (did I mentioned my copy was autographed by the lovely, twisted Zabet?). Of course my oldest red headed demon had already snuck up behind me and was looking over my shoulder and when she saw the tentacles she started giggling about Chthulu (it gives you an idea of what type of family this is if a 4 soon to be 5 year old even knows who Chthulu is let along wants one) and informed me she's expecting a Chthulu plushie for her upcoming bday. She is? Well, I suppose that with her personality it's appropriate. She quickly disappeared again and let me get back to my reading. I loved everything. While I have no need for most of the items for myself, I can definitely see myself making a lot of the stuff for family & friends. One of the first items I'm making for myself is Skylla for my recently acquired cell phone. Or perhaps for my Keeper; I haven't made up my mind yet. I just absolutely loved everything about this lovely tome. Don't forget to check out [...] for some small assorted errata. Also, a few things that had escaped during the editing process were rounded up and are available for viewing such Bones, a lovely pair of skull & crossbones socks. Only three things disappointed me about this book.

1 ~ There wasn't MORE!
2 ~ Several items I would like to do are crochet and alas, I have never mastered that art. I guess it's time to get off my lazy bum and do so.
3 ~ Well, piffle. I did have three but now I don't remember so I guess it wasn't important. :D

So, yes, definitely get this book! Even if you only want to use it to scare the in-laws or the numerous Mormon neighbors, that's okay.

Goth, punk or pirate? Then this is the craft book for you.
Probably my favorite craft book. Just like their website, there's a few silly things in there that I can't ever picture myself making or using, but then there are these sensational gems that inspire me to go out, buy a bunch of supplies and learn a whole new craft just so I can have this cool thing. The Yar! hat was the project that made me learn how to knit. Aside from getting the most wicked winter hat ever, I was able to learn a new skill from their "virgins" section in the back of the book and it opened up a whole new world of craftiness for me.

The patterns are well-written and easy to follow. The pictures and illustrations are dark and delicious. The "flavor" text rocks my socks. Hit their website to get an idea of the style of both the writing and projects.

Vogue Knitting on the Go!-Bags Two
Although I'm a crocheter, I still like this book for the styles and information on making different types of bags.

Definitely not for the beginner.

lots of detail work
The two bags by Margery Winter are worth the price of the book.One is a freeform bag with lots of added knit flowers. The second is Boho and looks kind of old fashioned but very interesting.Why did they use this ugly orange bag for the cover? There's a nice little water bottle bag, a very pretty slip stitch shoulder bag. The wavy bag pattern isnice. Pink evening bag seems very involved to make but is quite attractive. The woven messenger bag is another nice one. Nice cabled tote with i-cord handles. Two backpacks, one for a child. If you like to felt there are six of them out of the twentyfive. Some projects add embroidery or beads. Most of the handles are to be purchased. Linings use the finished bag as a template which I find difficult. Not for the knitter in a hurry. The Harmony Guide To CROCHETING Techniques and Stitches
I bought this book because everyone who had loves it. I have it now and I can see why. I have several nice crocheting books but this is one of the nicer ones. It is almost full of patterns which I love. It has a small beginning section for basic stitches and them some others so it is great for beginners and experienced. There really is something here for everyone.

I feel quite sure if you purchase this book you will be happy with it as a wonderful reference and pattern idea book. I get so bored with the same old stitch patterns and this helps break up the monotony. I only buy crochet books with symbol patterns included because they are the ones easiest for me to follow and yep, this one has the symbols and pictures and written out instructions on every pattern.

This has more actual patterns that any other book I have seen and I have several.

If your on the fence, dont be...look at the glowing reviews. It is hard to please everyone but this book seems to have so far. Good luck and happy crocheting!

I refer to this book for almost every crochet project I undertake.
When I took my first crochet lesson 10 or 12 years ago, my teacher told me that I should buy a good instruction book as a reference.When I arrived at the second lesson with this book, my instructor was so impressed with it, she asked where she could get a copy!Since then, I've collected many pattern books, but I've never come across a better resource.

No matter what project I'm working on, I usually refer to this book for clarification on the stiches or tips on finishing.The Harmony Guide is wonderful and after reading all of the complaints about how hard it is to find, I'm really concerned about what I'll do when it wears out.

Republish this book!
Like others, I call to the publisher and to the author of this book to bring it back to the public. I have a 1992 copyrighted version of this book and it has become a "bible" of sorts for many projects. Put this back on the market again!

I have made many a projects from the pattern stitches and with the diagrams and symbols used in this book, I can easily look and decide if it will work for the project at hand.

In short, this book needs to be republished and those that can get their hands on it or already have it, don't let it go.It's one of the most comprehensive pattern stitch books that I have ever seen.

Best Crochet Book Ever
After reading a library copy of this book, I knew this was a MUST HAVE book ! The publisher needs to definitely do a reprint of this book, as I know that there are many others that would love to have a copy of it for themselves ! It is a valuable asset for any crocheter- beginner or advanced ! It show us crocheters many different types of stitches that most of us would never think of trying otherwise and in an easy to understand format.

MOUNTFORD! Please find another publisher! I need a copy!
Craftspeople, we need to do something. Everyone who sees Mountford's book wants a copy. Let's write letters to the publisher--or find the publisher's web page and email them--or something! Nowhere else have I seen a book soclear about the steps to be followed in working a stitch. Never before haveI seen directions for so many different stitches in one book. The photosand drawings are the most clear and helpful I have seen in 25 years ofcrocheting. Beginners, intermediates, and masters of crochet are all wellserved by this book, but none of us seems able to get a copy of it!

Mountford also has a guide to knitting, of which I have always beenafraid because of the difficulties I have had each time I've tried to knit,but I can't seem to find a copy of that book, either. I just know I couldlearn to knit if I had that book.

If anybody out there in this wide,wide, electronically connected world knows why the publisher isn't comingout with other editions of these wondrous books, would you please let meknow so that I can lay my knitting ambitions to rest? Many thanks.

Good and Bad
I have made only one bag so far - the pink shell bag.It was simple and looks great.I put some embellishments of my own on it.I can see making several of these bags for gifts, in different colors, different handles and trims.So for this pattern alone, it was worth the price.

However, some of the designs are uninteresting or even seem unpolished or amateurish.

Trisha Malcolm is the editor for this book and series but I think something happened to this one as usually the quality is pretty good on this series. First of all, many of the yarns used are very expensive like Trendsetter yarns. Second: since when are baskets considered bags?There's nothing here I want to make but check out the "Hooked bags" by Margaret Hubert which I gave 5 stars.So of the 22 bags only 20 are original here. You'll find a felted laptop bag and a yoga bag here and a freeform bag which calls for a large variety of hard to find materials. Hubert does have two nice clutches here but the yarns are fancier than what she used in her own book. ... Read more

not a good buy
although Two Balls or Less might be a helpful and interesting book for beginning knitters and crocheters who wantto learn about novelty yarnsand experiment with new techniqes, as a seasoned knitter and crocheter I found the projects uninspiring. Most of them were not something I would want to make for myself orgive as a gift.

Decent ideas, but unusual yarns
As a beginner knitter, I am scooping up books that feature, quick, easy, and inexpensive projects.The great thing about books like this one, is the immediate gratification one gets when one finishes a project.Some of us are pressed for time, others don't have the patience to complete a lengthy work, and it is for this premise that I recommend this book.

Another plus of this book is that there is 1 crochet project per section.

My first project was a dog sweater that I made for my Aunt's dog.I used Lion Brand's Thick and Quick, a lovely machine washable chunky yarn.This pattern gave me experience in increasing and using a varied rib pattern.Yes, I messed up many times with the ribbing count, and ripped out my work MANY times, and gave up and kept it a bit "off"--after all, it's for a dog, what does she care if the ribbing is a litte "off."

Next, I made a heart-shaped decorative pillow using Lion's Hometown USA.It came out pretty well and I learned the seed stitch.

On the downside, some of the yarns recommended are ribbon tape, or slubbed, or an unusual boucle.Again, I really don't know what to substitute.

Overall, perhaps if you are more knowledgable about yarns or have a yarn store to shop in, this book is for you.

creative knitting
The book has creative,basically quick patterns. Some of the patterns could only work if you are knitting for children. The use of a variety of yarns makes it interesting.

An OK book of accessories
TWO BALLS OR LESS is another book that hopes to lure you in by offering projects that you may want to do as gifts, especially for someone who likes a bit of 'bling' in their wardrobe. I looked at the book in a local bookstore, and passed on it simply because nothing jumped out at me.

Informative
Very simply, the editor collected a number of tips and hints from different sources on the Internet and put them together in a book. I read through the book once and have never picked it up again. It is not the type of book that you will use as a reference for knitting. There are no lessons or patterns, just a collection of very short tips.

Teaches this old dog new tricks
I received this book last week as a birthday gift and was thrilled to see how good it is. I have been knitting for 40 years and still there were many things I learned just in my initial perusal of the book. This book is filled with excellent information from a wide varitey of sources and is written in easy to understand language. I'd recommend this book to any knitter who just wants to learn something new. Definite 5 stars in my opinion.

Inspirations galore
If you're looking for directions on how to knit, this isn't the book you want.

If you're looking for fresh ideas and new design directions, to take your knitting to the next level, you will find a plethora of ideas to inspire you.

Some of the "new directions" include knitting in circles out from the center, modular knitting techniques (more than just mitered squares), different takes on intarsia and fair isle, several ideas for stripes, etc, etc, etc.

This is not a manual for the "by the book" knitter - but if you're ready to take your own knitting path, you might enjoy the view.

Interesting Book
Like wat the editorial review says, the front portion of the book covers several techniques of knitting, the basics like increases, decreases, yarn overs, color knitting (fair isle, slip stitch), short row etc. There are samples given to illustrate the techniques and basic instructions as well.

There are several projects at the back that covers knitting garments in unusual and challenging ways like top down, side to side etc. It has pullovers, vests, bedjackets, pillows and hats. But just a few projects are given. Have not tried them yet, so not sure if there are any mistakes.

The book is pretty expensive to buy and if you are a frequent buyer of knitting magazines, you would have read similar articles relating to knitting techniques before.

If you are an experienced knitting, then don't think you will need the book, rather borrow a copy from friends or the library to try the projects. ... Read more
