Product Description

Short stories have enjoyed a long and popular history, with many famous writers attempting the craft at some point or another. Here, Lee assembles a variety of writers who comment on the form itself and its many meanings and manifestations. Concentrating on the features and challenges of the short story, contributors from Amiri Baraka to Richard Ford and Jayne Anne Phillips to Janette Turner Hospital discuss their own writing, the writing of others, the short story form, gender, politics, and other issues concerning the writing of short fiction. Readers will come away with a fuller understanding and appreciation of the craft of the short story writer.

Taking a populist approach to the subject, Writers on Writing focuses on relaying to readers the truth about short story writing. Writers from around the globe reveal the secrets of the form and their own approaches to it, as well as criticism of other writers and their output. Challenging some of the traditional views of past and current critics about short fiction, they present a new outlook on the short story that speaks to both the short story writer and the short story reader.

1-0 out of 5 stars theory of theory
I bought this book expecting a practical guide to using Socratic Method in the Composition classroom, but found a book more rooted in rhetorical philosophy than writing instruction. The thesis of the book is that "Transactional Rhetoric" and Socratic Method are more congruent than other rhetorical stances, a thesis which the author spends the entire book (all 100 pages of it)trying to prove. The book reads like a master's thesis. The only hint at application covers how the theory could be applied in theory. ... Product Description
In this, the first full-length study of Vico's highly original autobiography, Verene discusses its place in the history of autobiography generally, and shows it to be the first work of modern intellectual autobiography which uses a genetic method. The author views the autobiography as a work in which Vico applies the principles of human history discussed in New Science, making the telling of his own life an application and verification of his own philosophy. He places Vico's autobiography within the general development of the genre, considering it in relation to Augustine's Confessions, Descartes's Discourse, and Rousseau's Confessions. The author shows Vico to be not only the founder of the philosophy of history, but also the originator of a philosophical art of self-narrative which is the response by a modern thinker to the ancient problem of self-knowledge. ... Product Description
Writing Centers have traditionally been viewed as marginalized facilities within their institutions. This book challenges that view by examining the evolving theoretical, practical, and institutional relationships between Writing Centers and Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) Programs at the secondary and postsecondary levels. Based on their experiences at particular institutions, expert contributors present a variety of approaches for establishing and developing effective partnerships between Writing Centers and WAC Programs. These partnerships have been given relatively little consideration in the larger field of composition and rhetoric. By deepening our knowledge of the merging of these two specialized areas of scholarship, the volume sets the foundation for more advanced research. The contributors present different perspectives that accurately portray the true diversity of Writing Center/WAC partnerships and their compatibility with larger institutional missions. ... Product Description
This groundbreaking collection of essays is one of the first works to reflect directly and systematically on the conceptual and ethical basis for composition studies as a new discipline of written language. Phelps articulates a philosophy of composition generous enough to accommodate all the strands of current work without being overly eclectic--an open framework subject to modification and addition as the field develops. She draws on wide reading in the humanities and social sciences--including cognitive science, linguistics, literary theory, education, philosophy, hermeneutics, rhetoric, and psychology--to define the contribution and place of composition studies within the larger intellectual and cultural community. The book will therefore interest theorists and scholars in a wide variety of fields. ... Read more

Product Description
This work takes a phenomenological approach to analyzing the dramatic form, focusing not on the interpretation of plays, but rather on Brownstein's perceptions and their sources. The distinct aspects of the dramatic art form are discussed using a wide variety of well-known plays, from ancient Greece to the present day. Brownstein offers a theoretical survey of the "perception shift" that infuses even the smallest element of a play, the forces that are expressed through major dramatic strategies, and the ways in which a single narrative sequence may serve both prospective and retrospective strategies. ... 13. Tragic Pleasures: Aristotle on Plot and Emotion
by Elizabeth S. Belfiore
 Hardcover: 436 Pages (1992-06)
list price: US$72.50
Isbn: 0691068992

Editorial Review

Product Description
Elizabeth Belfiore offers a striking new interpretation of Aristotle's Poetics by situating the work within the Aristotelian corpus and in the context of Greek culture in general. In Aristotle's Rhetoric, the Politics, and the ethical, psychological, logical, physical, and biological works, Belfiore finds extremely important but largely neglected sources for understanding the elliptical statements in the Poetics. The author argues that these Aristotelian texts, and those of other ancient writers, call into question the traditional view that katharsis in the Poetics is a homeopathic process--one in which pity and fear affect emotions like themselves. She maintains, instead, that Aristotle considered katharsis to be an allopathic process in which pity and fear purge the soul of shameless, antisocial, and aggressive emotions. While exploring katharsis, Tragic Pleasures analyzes the closely related question of how the Poetics treats the issue of plot structure. In fact, Belfiore's wide-ranging work eventually discusses every central concept in the Poetics, including imitation, pity and fear, necessity and probability, character, and kinship relations. ...
