4-0 out of 5 stars Added to collection
Just another in the pantry, added to my collection.Just missing 2 out of the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good cookbook investment.
As a long time Southern Living magazine subscriber, I collect the yearly collections of the magazine recipes. The worst I can say about Southern Living recipes is that they may not always be the healthiest, but they're always good. Purchasing cookbooks can be a bit of a crap shoot, but you can't go wrong with these collections of recipes; they're a good investment. Compared to other magazines that I've tried, this one reigns superior when it comes to recipe offerings and I've noticed that more and more are healthier--great for those of us getting older and encountering cholesterol, sodium, and fat issues. I usually purchase these books second-hand and save a considerable amount of money that way. I also recommend the annual Christmas collections which have less recipes but instead give lots of great Christmas decorating ideas.

1-0 out of 5 stars Annual Gift
My mother-in-law expects book every year.I feel it's unhealthy, mundane and worse now using mixes in the recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars As Always, Wonderful
I have purchased Southern Living Annuals since 1979 and have never been disappointed.2007 is especially good...

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money.
I bought this because I have watched a number of cooking shows featuring southern food stars. Paula Dean, the Neely's, etc. Their cooking always looked great to me. Talk about disappointed. Unless your really sure that you want this don't buy it. Very unusual meals to us from the north country. They might be good but sure are odd, ingredients hard to come by around here. I was expecting BBQ ribs, Chili's, Pot Roasts, what I got was everything but.

Apologies to you good folks in the south but I don't know how you can eat some of this stuff. LOL, matter of what you grew up with I guess.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent, but not Southern Livings best work
I agree with the other reviewers - I would definitely not rank this one as high as other Southern Living Christmas books, however this book does have some nice contributions. There are some mighty decent looking recipes in here - some of which make me want to get right to my kitchen and start baking!Others, are something I can pass by. I like the idea of having both cooking and decorating ideas in the same book, but who is the person who chose a lot of these decorating ideas?I'd say they need to get someone new....the ideas in here were a little weird - like hanging silverware or wine goblets on ribbons off a chandelier over the dining table?Yeah right - I can just see the first kid giving those wine goblets a swing and hearing the clang and shattering glass going all over. They have a few nice decorating ideas, but for the most part nothing I want to copy in my home. The one thing I will say though about the Southern Living books, they sure give off a cozy ambiance, a feeling of "I want to be there" in the photographs. They make the tables look so elegant and the food so perfect, and it does make me want to copy that for our holiday meals. All the candles lit everywhere also add to the beauty of the photos.Overall, not a bad book, but it's just not as good as others.

3-0 out of 5 stars Christmas cookbook
I bought this book at Christmas since I wanted some new recipes. It is a nice book, but I had wanted a lot of recipes and this book was about half decorating ideas. Many of the ideas are intended for very large houses or involve lots of silver and crystal. The decorating ideas take more time than I have to contribute, and I have my decorations that I use every year that are classic in my family.I would like to have had lots of recipes and maybe a few decorating ideas incorporated with the food.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is good!
I bought this for my girlfriend and she loved it.I looked through it and liked it as well. Also, my mom looked through it and was jealous I didn't get it for her! :) Great for the homemaker or person who needs some inspiration.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book! Bad packaging job.
Great annual cookbook as usual, but we bought this as a gift and it arrived with the bottom right corners smashed in. The box was perfectly fine and it was shrinkwrapped as other books I've ordered from Amazon so it must have been damaged by poor handling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read on the run up to Christmas
I've never read Southern Living magazine before so can't compare it with other prints. I discovered the series leafing through a copy of the 2008 "Christmas with Southern Living" at a relatives house; I ordered this 2009 edition then and there. I'm very impressed and pleased with it. The book is packed full of recipes and decorative ideas that I'll be trying out over the festive season. ... Read more

    Product Description
Part cookbook, part culinary history, part family history, this book is an engaging and enlightening glimpse into the household of a well-to-do, mid-nineteenth-century Virginia family. Seeking to learn more about her ancestors' daily lives, Anne Zimmer, great-granddaughter of Robert E. and Mary Lee, turned to her great-grandmother's small, now shabby notebook. Packed with recipes, shopping lists, and other domestic jottings, the notebook opened an intimate window onto an earlier way of life.

With recipes for breads, cakes, puddings, sweets, soups, main dishes, vegetables, drinks, and home remedies, The Robert E. Lee Family Cooking and Housekeeping Book will serve as a ready reference on traditional American cookery. For each entry, the author provides the original recipe, helpful notes on the ingredients and techniques employed, and instructions--based on careful kitchen testing--for adapting the recipe in the modern kitchen. Peppered throughout with family stories and illustrated with photographs from the Lee family and other archives, the book is both an informative investigation of southern foodways and a fascinating look at one family's household history. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A really nice book - one of the best of the genre
The author, a descendant of the Lee family, has turned a family manuscript cookbook into a really useful book. The history is well researched and the recipes are thoroughly tested and worked out for the "modern" kitchen. For each recipe, the author discusses the recipe, and how it was interpreted. A model of what can be done with a manuscript cookbook by smart, hardworking women.

If you want a comprehensive introduction to the American table, or at least the upper class Southern table, the combination of Martha Washington's Cookery Booke (edited by Karen Hess; the title is misleading, the ms is much older), and Mary Randolph's "The Virginia Housewife" cover the 16th-17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed this book!
I learned more about the personalities in the Washington and Lee families and the history of food.It was really enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating; a window into the past!
I'm seventh cousin to U.S. Grant but have always had tremendous respect for, and interest in, the family of General Robert E. Lee. Altho we know that General Lee was a man of impecable morals and a champion of valor and honor, less has been known of his immediate family. Anne Carter Zimmer's book gives us a window in time into the life of the family of her great grandparents and a look at 19th century housekeeping. I grew up in Ohio before moving South and some of Mary Lee's household hints were utilized by my grandmother and mother. This is a fantastic book, warm, humorous, informative and with photos and shetches enough to make one sense that they might have felt at home in the Lee household.

Please, Anne, let us hear from you in the future. I'd very much like to know more about your singular family!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Glimpse Into History
This book is a great one for providing us a glimpse into life over 100 years ago.It is hard to imagine what a woman had to do back then to create the genteel life.Every household had to be self-sufficient, as this remarkable volume shows, making its own foodstuff, soap and cleansers.I loved this book and have shared it with good friends.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting and informative
Anyone who is interested in knowing more about the personal side of Gen. Robert E. Lee and the people who stood behind him and allowed him to become great (his family) will enjoy this insight into their everyday lives andthe heritage the author (Lee's great-granddaughter) has had to live up tothroughout her life.

I would strongly recommend this. ... Read more

    Product Description
Gifted chef and storyteller Martha Hall Foose invites you into her kitchen to share recipes that bring alive the landscape, people, and traditions that make Southern cuisine an American favorite.

Born and raised in Mississippi, Foose cooks Southern food with a contemporary flair: Sweet Potato Soup is enhanced with coconut milk and curry powder; Blackberry Limeade gets a lift from a secret ingredient–cardamom; and her much-ballyhooed Sweet Tea Pie combines two great Southern staples–sweet tea and pie, of course–to make one phenomenal signature dessert. The more than 150 original recipes are not only full of flavor, but also rich with local color and characters.

As the executive chef of the Viking Cooking School, teaching thousands of home cooks each year, Foose crafts recipes that are the perfect combination of delicious, creative, and accessible. Filled with humorous and touching tales as well as useful information on ingredients, techniques, storage, shortcuts, variations, and substitutions, Screen Doors and Sweet Tea is a must-have for the American home cook–and a must-read for anyone who craves a return to what cooking is all about: comfort, company, and good eating. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Cook book with character....
I bought this as a gift to a friend who loves things of the south esp. sweet tea!I haven't cooked from this book, but you can't beat the southern cookin'!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great recipe book
I love her personal stories and the recipes are delicious. At least the ones I have done so far. I love the pictures featured in this book. Definitely a great purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh, yum!
I bought this book mostly for sentimental reasons. Most of my maternal family lives in the south. At first I just oohed and ahhed over the pictures, which are pretty scrumptious looking and even recoiled a little at the turtle recipe, but I have just had a go at several of them. I made the Lemon Icebox pie which is dense, bright and delightful and I also made the Blue Cheese Pecan Bread, which even my toddler adores. I think this book has managed to capture an amazing culture of food and is quite different than a lot of what you see on the market. I can see why the reviews are so polarized, if you don't have a Southern American upbringing a lot of the recipes may be hard for you to wrap your head around, but they appeal to me. Simple, real, fresh, delicious and soul-satisfying.

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT HAPPY
After going through this book,I have to sayI was disappointed. The recipes seemed strange to me ,I could not find anything that I would make.I also find it interesting that others are not allowed to have an opinion of this book without so much negative response.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book:)
Living in England and being a Georgia girl i really miss southern food sooooo
much. This book is all i need i *LOVE* it. 645 things to cook should keep me busy for a long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for all skill levels
This is a great book, for all skill levels. We all had to start somewhere and this book takes you from basics such as hosting a party (things that go good together, table and place setting, grill maintenance, concepts like direct and indirect heat) up on to more advanced things like smoking meat and places to visit if you are in an are (such as Kilgore, TX if I remember the book correctly).Dry rubs, sauces, beans, appetizers, desserts, adult beverages, tea's: you name it, its all here and all of it that I have tried is good quality.

Also, they have titles at the top of the recipe.I have made it a point to hit the ones first that have "Kids Love It" on it as I have 3 (7, 5, and 1 at this point). You know you are doing barbecue right if your 1 year old won't stop making happy noises while he eats the shredded bbq chicken recipe (page 177).

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the only BBQ cookbook I will ever need...
I purchased this along with Southern Living 40 Years of Our Best Recipes the week before Labor Day and it was delivered within a couple days. This was my first BBQ cookbook and will probably be my only one as I am still reading and finding awesome recipes I want to try. My contribution to our Labor Day cookout was four recipes from this cookbook: Tropical Smoothies, Four-Hour Barbecue, Grilled Asparagus and Honey Barbecue Sauce (which I used on babyback ribs and chicken quarters). ALL of them were a HUGE hit and the cookbook was passed around during the cookout. I have purchased two additional sets as birthday gifts and the recipients have raved about the new recipes they are anxious to try, especially from this BBQ cookbook. I also shared this BBQ cookbook with some of my co-workers and they all want their own copy (I'm not letting this one out of my sight for very long). The recipes are not complicated and so far, have provided wonderful results.

There are other helpful tidbits in the front of the cookbook that were interesting to me: There is a fairly decent list of BBQ places and BBQ events to visit across the country so now I can build my travel plans around those places/events. Reading the grilling tips in the front has even inspired me to purchase a smoker. Although it is a paperback version and may not be able to withstand my constant reading and use, I am very excited about this cookbook and will definitely be using these recipes year-round.

This is a winner in terms of usability. As for the recipes, it goes from medium to difficult in terms of prep time (at least for me). It's a gourmet cookbook afterall and some of the ingredients are not easily available where I live. If I lived near Whole Foods then I'd be cooking each recipe every day! There's so much variety in this book and it's really amazing what you can cook.

But a few suggestions I wish the publisher included...

    1. Include "Difficulty level" indicator - scale from 1 to 5 would have been helpful so I don't waste my time cooking something and find out halfway to regret it.

    2. Include "Preparation time" - again, it would have been helpful so that I can plan ahead of time (I was very late for a potluck because of this).

    3. Include "Serving Size" or "feeds x people", etc - this seems so basic in most magazine cookbooks and I'm surprised this was omitted.

    4. A nutritional guide or calories/fat index would be useful.

Overall, this is an excellent book. A great value too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine Cooking Fresh is the best!
I love to cook and try new recipes these are just my style. Lots of flavor and easy to prepare.
I gave this as a gift, but after looking at the recipes I wanted it for myself. So far I have only tried a few recipes. The roasted carrot soup is great, and I had everything in the fridge already! The updated Cobb salad is terrific as is the classic Caesar. Haven't tried all the salad dressings yet, but I will. The Roasted Cod with Basil Pesto & Garlic Breadcrumbs is reeeaaaaly yummy. Next I want to try the Thia Beef Salad with Mint & Cilantro. The Stir-fried Broccoli with Oyster Sauce is lovely (go with the red chile)The Grilled Asparagus with Fresh Tarragon Mayonnaise is wonderful with fish and the Braised Carrots, Red Onions & Bell Peppers with Ginger, Lime & Cilantro has become my Husbands new favorite. Haven't tried the Desserts yet however, later this month I'll try the Carrot Cake as it is my Husbands favorite.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and enjoyable!
I use this book less for decorating ideas then for recipes. Many of the decorating tips, though lovely, are a bit too impractical and time consuming for my house full of kids and pets. But I find I use the recipes not only at Christmas, but other times of the year, too. It's a great source of inspiration when friends come over for dinner, offering complete menus for various occasions. The menus even have "game plans" that tell you which dishes can be prepped in advance. Very handy for getting things done with young kids!
I was pleased to find the healthy menu options in this book.A good friend became diabetic about the time I got this, and it was wonderful to be able to prepare elegant, tasty meals that she could eat without worry.AND she's asked me for the recipes every time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Special Christmas Book
I love Southern Living Christmas Books. They are so full of wonderful ideas for decorating and special holiday foods.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another edition to enjoy..
I purchased this edition in late spring 2008, so I received a great, low price on the book.I did the same with the 2006 edition last year and have been pleased with each. There are numerous recipes that are worthwhile and I primarily use the Christmas edition for the baked goods and candy recipes and give them away as gifts. So far no complaints from any recipients!!Decorating tips spark enough interest to try and adapt one or two of the ideas for the holidays. Will continue to purchase yearly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
Year after year Southern Living produced fantastic Christmas books... until this year. The decorations were gaudy and the Cowboy Christmas section was ghastly.

1-0 out of 5 stars So sad about this one.
I am so, so sad about this book, it's taken me a day to write this.I have come to depend on what I call my 'secret weapon' i.e. Southern Living for surprisingly innovative and always reliable recipes over the years.Their other Christmas editions and even the Homemade Holidays book are my stand bys this time of year.

I can't even believe they put their name on this. For one - where are all the recipes? It seemed decorating (and I'm sorry - I just don't see the need for 200 'tablescape' options...) took precedence over the food this year. And even worse - of the recipes there, two chapters were dedicated to my LEAST favorite topics involving food at this time of year - "Healthy" and "Express."Honestly to see a cake recipe using already made store bought cheesecake almost brought tears (of sorrow, not joy) to my eyes.Any other time of year, maybe (although that's not what I look to Southern Living for) but NOT the holidays! It's the time to dazzle and forget about all our normal worries and restrictions.

I had read the other reviews stating it wasn't up to par, but just couldn't believe them.If only I had...This copy will probably be headed to my local resale shop. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cookbook review
I have all the Southern Living Cookbooks from 1976 through 2009 now.I began purchasing them for my daughter when she was on her own after college.I bought this cookbook for her to complete her set since she was missing 2008.These are great cookbooks for a beginner or advanced cook. When my grandmother died, I was lucky enough to receive one of her all time favorite cookbook and she had made notes in her cookbook.I enjoy reading her comments and notes and now I try to do the same in my cookbooks for future generations to enjoy.I do wish there was an index book for the later years of books though.I have the index book for the early years but not the last ten years.Great book to buy!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not so good.
I have collected every southern living cookbook since 1979.I have really used them alot. This one, in my opinion, does not compare to the other books before. The recipes were nothing new.I liked the other books because not only did they have exciting receipes but you could always count on being able to go to a section (or month or season) and finding two or three items that they had placed together to make a complete meal. These receipes just seemed to up be stuck together in a month. All different and nothing in common. Hoping next year will be better.

3-0 out of 5 stars Southern Living 2008 Annual Recipes: Every recipe from 2008
I love Southern Living magazine.Every time I receive one in the mail I go through it and make sometime that month my favorite recipes. The recipes are excellent but I was disappointed with the amount of pictures. No matter whose recipe I follow it is always nice to see how it is actually presented.Of course the magazine allows for that, so I would not get any of their annual books.I prefer to just stick with the great magazine where I get more pictures!

1-0 out of 5 stars Just a typical book
I was very disappointed in this book.I have hundreds of cookbooks and found that the recipes in this book can be found in any cookbook - nothing new.It is just an ordinary cookbook wrapped up in a fancy package.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Basic
Not sure why this is getting so many 5 star ratings.. Its just very basic cooking. Some way to basic,ie. mashed
potatoes. I checked it out from local library as well as another review shared before making the purchase. Glad I did as not enough of the recipes stood out as more than ordinary. Think one can get a greater variety searching for other cookbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook
Have Trish's other cookbook - had to get this one too. Enjoy her recipes and stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful cookbook and story book!
I love all cookbooks, and this one is no different. The recipes are delicious and her personal notes are a delight.I read the book from cover to cover and enjoyed every moment.I am also from the south and quite a few recipes I remember from childhood.Love the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Reluctant Cook finds help
I hate to cook.I hate grocery stores.Alas when my teacher husband returns to school I reluctantly take over cooking.Past attempts to try new recipes led to "Huh??" moments and edible but not great results. This cookbook has some extremely basic recipes that I don't need like how to mash potatoes. It also has some YUMMY recipes.I've now made 4 very successful items that were simple, clear, and without tons of ingredients, and so good. They are fattening but all really good food is.I thought my husband was going to hit the floor when he came home to coconut pie. Thanks Trisha.Just ordered the new cookbook :) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Christmas with Southern Living
Every year I look forward to the Christmas with Southern Living book. I enjoy them very much and have been collecting them for several years. I've tried the recipes and have never been disappointed. The beautiful color photos offer loads of decorating and entertaining ideas.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A winner.
CHRISTMAS WITH SOUTHERN LIVING 2006 (0848731158, $29.95) isn't strictly a cookbook, though recipes are its core: it combines menus and time-saving holiday plans as well as party ideas with dishes which lend to entertainment and family gatherings. Many are fast, easy editor's picks, with chapters handily divided by type of entertainment: brunch buffet, office party, dinner party, and the like. A winner.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Up To Snuff
Like many of you, I collect these books year after year. This year was very disappointing. The book really is mainly recipes.I don't buy them for that, although the few I try are good. I buy this book mainly for the decorating and gift ideas. This year the book is really lacking in them.In years past they've shown how to decorate the outside of your house, the mantle, the table, and just about anywhere in a house that you could put a decoration. This year you basically have one mantle. That's it.Sorry, this book had me saying to myself, "I paid full price for this!!"

If you really want this book, buy it used or look at it first in the library before you make your decision.

    Product Description
From the Southern Living family comes this keepsake cookbook steeped in classic comfort food and warm reflections sure to strike a familiar chord.

Southern Living Comfort Food features more than 150 wholesome dishes--the kinds of recipes that are shared at supper clubs, passed down through generations of families, and swapped over coffee. Recipes like Banana Pudding Pie, Poppy Seed-Chicken Casserole, and BLT Potato Salad are presented alongside poignant essays that stir memories of family, friends, and the whimsies of childhood. Full of simple and satisfying dishes like Chicken Pot Pie and Pan-Fried Pork Chops, Southern Living Comfort Food is for young and old alike. Its food for
    the soul.

Its a tribute to family traditions.

I watch her do it every year. Mom leafs through files, shuffles through kitchen drawers, and finally emerges victorious with a handful of old, dog-eared recipes for the dishes our family always expects on the table every Thanksgiving and Christmas. This disorganization isn't a sign of an untidy housekeeper; like every good Southern cook, she's showing respect for family history.

Beautiful book and great recipes.Haven't found one that was not a keeper yet.Great pictures included and would be a very nice gift also.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cooking from scratch...not
For a book that talks at length about cooking from scratch, why would they use packet potato to make mashed potato!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Recipe so far is Good!
I did not purchase this book from Amazon, but I did purchase it from costco. This book so far has been a top favorite cook book in my collection. Every recipe that I have made so far from it has been superb! I haven't just made a couple appetizers, I've made the pumpkin chess pie, the blueberry muffins, the homestyle hamburger casserole, and the farmer's scramble just to name a few. I actually just made the muffins last night and I followed the recipe exactly, and the muffins turned out moist and bursting with blueberry flavor..not to sweet! If you love southern comfort food than this is definitely the book for you, happy cooking!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite SL cookbooks
I own lots of SL cookbooks and this is definitely one of my favorites. The pictures are beautiful and the anecdotal stories were charming. Many memories of growing up in a Southern Baptist family were brought back to life - grandparent's house every Sunday after church, Wednesday night potlucks, homecoming, you get the idea :)I just made the Chicken & Wild Rice casserole to take to a church member who recently had surgery. It made enough for two 9x13 casseroles, so my husband and I got to enjoy one as well.It was outstanding.I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for some cozy recipes and possibly a trip down memory lane! ... “Authentic Southern Cooking with Chuck and Miss Loraine”(Book Description)Louisiana born husband and wife Chuck and Miss Lorraine Lizana introduce recipes from past generations along with their own creativity and 25 years of experience in the restaurant industry. Their presentation of Southern style cooking is based on the New Orleans flavors of Cajun, Creole and African American cuisine. You’ll learn new ways to give familiar ingredients lots of flavor and a little zip.The Lizanas will introduce you to Shrimp-Rice Fritters and Sweet Potato Dip. Enjoy hearty Gumbo made with okra whose seeds were transported to a new land by Africans; or Gumbo made with file´ powder introduced by the Choctaw Indians. Add to that Hot Water Cornbread like Grandma Lou use to cook on her cast-iron wood stove. And don’t leave out the mouth-watering desserts like warm Peach Cobbler, “Real” Banana Pudding, and Miss Betty’s Red Velvet Cake. This cookbook would not be complete without recipes for “New Orleans Style” Red Beans and Rice, N’awlins Bread Pudding, and Hot Sausage Po’boys as the Lagniappe (a little something extra). This is more than a recipe book, as the Lizanas share their stories of the traditions and cultures they grew up with in Southeast Louisiana.
