5-0 out of 5 stars Bible for Sigma Delta ADC design
This along with Green Book (Understanding Delta-Sigma Data Converters by Richard Schreier and Gabor C. Temes) & the Blue book (Oversampling Delta-Sigma Data Converters: Theory, Design, and Simulation by James C. Candy and Gabor C. Temes ) form a triad of delta sigma ADC books you will have to read, ifyou are serious about understanding,designing delta sigma ADC and getting it to work in silicon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comment to review from Cambridge
I just wanted to say, please ignore the previous review (from Cambridge). A good designer needs also a good theoretical base. One chapter might go a bit far but it's only one of many! It is indeed a true compendium!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
a good book for sigma delta modulator design. a lot of deep insight.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive discussion of issues in sigma delta mod.
This is the only book I know of that gives such a thorough discussion on the state of the art in sigma delta modulation, including design tips and insight into the authors' own experiences.A necessity for anyoneconsidering the design of a high-order modulator. It is not an introductorytext, and does assume basic knowledge in signal processing and A/Dconversion in general.

1-0 out of 5 stars An entirely mathematical description of the subject
This seems to have been written by experts in the field, FOR experts in the field.Takes a highly mathematical approach to the subject, the supporting text seems to only describe the mathematical derivations.Thisbook would probably be fine for academic environments where the need forpractical and 'real world' implementation issues, is unnecessary. Fordesign engineers wishing to explore this field it is unhelpful andfrustrating to read, for as soon as the mathematical analysis is completethe text moves to another subject.Text descriptions (in plain English) ofthe concepts that underpin the principles would be helpful, this is adifficult subject at best, there seems no sense in confounding thesituation further with books like this ! ... Product Description
After nearly a decade of success owing to its thorough coverage, abundance of problems and examples, and practical use of simulation and design, Power-Switching Converters enters its second edition with new and updated material, entirely new design case studies, and expanded figures, equations, and homework problems. This textbook is ideal for senior undergraduate or graduate courses in power electronic converters, requiring only systems analysis and basic electronics courses.

The only text of such detail to also include the use of PSpice and step-by-step designs and simulations, Power-Switching Converters, Second Edition covers basic topologies, basic control techniques, and closed-loop control and stability. It also includes two new chapters on interleaved converters and switched capacitor converters, and the authors have added discrete-time modeling to the dynamic analysis of switching converters. The final two chapters are dedicated to simulation and complete design examples, respectively. PSpice examples and MATLAB scripts are available for download from the CRC Web site. These are useful for the simulation of students' designs. Class slides are also available on the Internet.

Instructors will appreciate the breadth and depth of the material, more than enough to adapt into a customized syllabus. Students will similarly benefit from the more than 440 figures and over 1000 equations, ample homework problems, and case studies presented in this book. ... Read more

Product Description
Power converters are at the heart of modern power electronics. From automotive power systems to propulsion for large ships, their use permeates through industrial, commercial, military, and aerospace applications of various scales. Having reached a point of saturation where we are unlikely to see many new and revolutionary technologies, industry now seeks to optimize and standardize the performance of these devices. Power-Switching Converters: Medium and High Power examines the characteristics and operating principles of these systems in terms of how to increase their efficiency and produce them at lower cost.

This book begins with an introduction to the field, placing the technology in its business context to highlight the current trends and issues facing the modern power engineer. The remainder of the book provides a detailed examination of three-phase power switching converters, including the various problems and solutions involved in different applications. It discusses high-power semiconductor devices, pulse-width modulation (PWM) principles and algorithms for various implementations, closed-loop current control, component-minimized topologies, power grid interface, parallel and interleaved power converters, and practical aspects such as protection and thermal management.

Filling the gap between textbooks and technical papers, Power-Switching Converters: Medium and High Power offers practical solutions to current industrial demands with a focus on the particular business needs of performance quality and cost efficiency. It also serves as an excellent textbook for graduate study. ... Read more

Product Description
DC/DC conversion techniques have undergone rapid development in recent decades. With the pioneering work of authors Fang Lin Luo and Hong Ye, DC/DC converters have now been sorted into their six generations, and by a rough count, over 500 different topologies currently exist, with more being developed each year.Advanced DC/DC Converters offers a concise, practical presentation of DC/DC converters, summarizing the spectrum of conversion technologies and presenting many new ideas and more than 100 new topologies. The treatment begins with background material on DC/DC conversion and discussions on voltage lift and super-lift converters. It then proceeds through each generation, including the groundbreaking sixth generation--converters developed by the authors that can be cascaded for high voltage transfer gain. More than 320 figures, 60 tables, and 500 formulae allow you to more easily grasp the overall structure of advanced DC/DC converters, provide fast access to precise data, and help you quickly determine the values of your own circuit components. Nowhere else in the literature are DC/DC converters so logically sorted and systematically introduced. Nowhere else can you find detailed information on prototype topologies that represent a major contribution to modern power engineering. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars An effort not reaching a good result
The book is written with the purpose to be an "up-to-date [source about] DC/DC converters for students and practicing professionals". It is a shame how this target is not reached. Since from the very begin, the introduction, you will face an answer: what is its usefulness? You'll hope that, going on reading, everything will be clearer, and, from a certain point of view, this is what you get: what you've seen in introduction is eventually explained so that it could be useful even to students. However the text neither is "practical" nor gives you the "in-depth-analysis" you were hoping since its title begins with "Advanced". Schematics are rarely useful to understand the following analysis and are often badly sketched/printed. Mathematical derivations are quite good but not enough to fulfill designers needs. Apart from this it is a good effort. In my opinion readers should have to wait the next edition, if there will be a next edition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Delivery: Impressive; Book Content: Excellent, A Classic
About the Delivery: The book arrived at the right time, despite delays due to snow at seattle , in the last weeks of December.The used book was in a very good condition. The first blank page had the name of the previous owner written on it (which is probably the case with any used book) but the book itself was in very usable condition.

About the book: This is a classic in Sigma Delta ADC design. Went through this book when I was a student, taking courses under Dr. Temes @ OSU. Though many of the papers are old (as on date), the content is nevertheless valuble, particularly for ramping up new engineers to the fundamentals of sigma delta design. I find even experienced analog/ADC engineers referring to this book while making system level architectural choices/decisions.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book on Sigma-Delta converters, theory and practise
A good book on sigma-delta converters, even though it is a compilation of chapters by different authors. It is obvious that they collaborated, because you really don't get the impression that multiple authors are involved. Theory and practise are discussed to a reasonable depth. Make no mistake though - it would still be difficult to rush off and design a working prototype and expect a spice simulation to agree with theory. The illustrations are good, and the book is well written. I take off a star mainly because it is expensive.

1-0 out of 5 stars incomprehensible
The book covers different Data Converter architectures. The coverage by itself is not sufficient to undertake a data converter design rather it should be treated as a starting point. However, this is not why I am giving this book a "one star". The book is almost incomprehensible. Sentence structures are awkward and confusing. Editorial Review

Product Description
This book studies switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) in great detail. This type of converter changes an unregulated DC voltage into a high-frequency pulse-width modulated (PWM) voltage controlled by varying the duty cycle, then changes the PWM AC voltage to a regulated DC voltage at a high efficiency by rectification and filtering. Used to supply electronic circuits, this converter saves energy and space in the overall system.

With concept-orientated explanations, this book offers state-of-the-art SMPS technology and promotes an understanding of the principle operations of PWM converters, as well as enabling the readers to evaluate their characteristics. Design-orientated analysis (including a steady-state analysis for both continuous and discontinuous conduction modes) and numerous real-world practical examples (including circuit models of the PWM converters) demonstrate how to design these from scratch.

The book provides an in-depth presentation of topologies of PWM DC-DC power converters, voltage- and current-mode control of PWM DC–DC power converters, considers power losses in all components, device stresses, output voltage ripple, converter efficiency and power factor correction (PFC).  It also includes extensive coverage of the following:

  • topologies of high-efficiency switching-mode PWM and soft-switching DC-DC power converters;
  • DC voltage transfer functions (conversion ratios), component values, losses, efficiency, and stresses;
  • small-signal averaged circuit models;
  • current-mode and voltage-mode feedback controls;
  • metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect power transistors (MOSFETs);
  • silicon (Si) and silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductor devices. Before now, there has been no book that covers silicon carbide devices.

Pulse-width Modulated DC-DC Power Converters is a comprehensive textbook for senior undergraduate and graduate students in the areas of electrical, electronics, and telecommunications engineering.   It includes end-of-chapter review questions, problems, and thorough summaries of the key concepts to aid learning, and a Solutions Manual is available for professors. Scientists and practicing design engineers working with SMPS, within such applications as computers, telecommunications,  industrial systems, automobile electronics, medical equipment, aerospace power technology, and radars (amongst others) will also find this text insightful. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars excellent dc-dc converter book!
Marian provides in-depth view of all dc-dc converter topologies. You should DEFINETLY know your electronic basics however, before engaging into this book. This book is perfect for anyone who has knowledge of basic electronics and a vague knowledge of power supplies. Marian covers all topologies and includes in-depth graphs, schematics/circuits. Marian goes over IGBTs, mosfets, and PWM switching circuits and feedback loops. EVen though this is a beefy book, half of it is technical math/derivatives etc...i just skip that stuff, as i'm no engineer. but the non-math parts are very comprehensive. Soft-switching is covered later on as well as voltage and current control loops. however, no PWM IC example was covered, which was kinda dissappointing...not a big deal though, since this subject was basically covered during the feedback loop section in a component-level scope. voltage and current graphs on a pulse by pulse time base are covered per topology as well.

On a side note, i think the Abraham I. Pressman/Billings 3rd edition complements this book nicely, for a different view/less math approach... ... Read more

Product Description

One of the main trends of microelectronics is toward design for integrated systems, i.e., system-on-a-chip (SoC) or system-on-silicon (SoS). Due to this development, design techniques for mixed-signal circuits become more important than before. Among other devices, analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters are the two bridges between the analog and the digital worlds. Besides, low-power design technique is one of the main issues for embedded systems, especially for hand-held applications.

Modular Low-Power, High-Speed CMOS Analog-to-Digital Converter for Embedded Systems aims at design techniques for low-power, high-speed analog-to-digital converter processed by the standard CMOS technology. Additionally this book covers physical integration issues of A/D converter integrated in SoC, i.e., substrate crosstalk and reference voltage network design.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money....
This book is VERY general and does not really give any worthwhile informationto someone looking to convert a bus.The price on this book is absolutely outrageous for what it is - beware DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!I ordered a couple other books from Dave Galey as well that were just as uninformative.I always come away wondering if this guy ever has even converted a bus or just spoke generally with a couple guys who have.If anyone gets a conversion done and feels like writing a book you'd do reall well selling it cuz this guy did terrible.

I must have read a different book!The book I read is quite concise, very readable and a joy to have.I have found that this book really inspires one to continue on the road to a bus conversion with a great deal ofconfidence and a sure friend to contact should you need assistance.Daveknows his way around a bus and I'm sorry the other folks didn't like thetitle (Bible, by the way justmeans "book", Dave didn't writethe "Holy Bus Converter's Bible, but he did write the all around bookon bus conversions, without getting so direct as to be a step by stepmanual, remember, he shouldn't be held responsible if I, or another doesn'tdo it right and turns a bus into a BOMB! Dave is a great guy, but he can'tlook over everyone's shoulder to make sure we don't do it wrong, althoughhe IS a very helpful guy to know when doing this work. As for me, I intendto LEARN those skills I don't have now so I can do the best job I can on mybus and take responsbility for my own work.)This IS indeed a BOOK to haveif you intend to convert a bus yourself, have one converted for you or evenbuy a motor home at a dealer's.The "boards" are right!, this iseven BETTER than you think it will be.Maybe it's a case of the glass half empty v.s. half FULL, THANKS DAVE!

1-0 out of 5 stars I would never call this book a Bible.
I read this book several times & found it too general. Not at all what I expected. I was looking for a step by step review to convert a bus into a 1st class RV. It boggs down in detail about technical fact to metalstrengths & fasteners, etc. I'm know this information is important,little attention is paid to the nuts & bolts of bus conversions. I'msure the book could / should be more specific. There are 'Standards' thatshould be followed from Bus Conversions to RVs (RVIA & NFPA Standards)A real "HOW TO" bookcould be written & this was not it! I'dlike to see a book that tells me "This is the way to do it" &then tell me why. We can apply such knowledge to whatever 'style'conversion we wish to do on whatever model bus we wish to convert. Thisbook is NOT as good as you would believe it is from reading the"Boards" ... Read more

Product Description
For very high voltage or very high current applications, the power industry still relies on thyristor-based Line Commutated Conversion (LCC), which limits the power controllability to two quadrant operation. However, the ratings of self-commutating switches such as the Insulated-Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) and Integrated Gate-Commutated Thyristor (IGCT), are reaching levels that make the technology possible for very high power applications.

This unique book reviews the present state and future prospects of self-commutating static power converters for applications requiring either ultra high voltages (over 600 kV) or ultra high currents (in hundreds of kA). It is an important reference for electrical engineers working in the areas of power generation, transmission and distribution, utilities, manufacturing and consulting organizations.

All topics in this area are held in this one complete volume. Within these pages, expect to find thorough coverage on:

  • modelling and control of converter dynamics;
  • multi-level Voltage Source Conversion (VSC) and Current Source Conversion (CSC);
  • ultra high-voltage VSC and CSC DC transmission;
  • low voltage high DC current AC-DC conversion;
  • industrial high current applications;
  • power conversion for high energy storage.

This text has a host of helpful material that also makes it a useful source of knowledge for final year engineering students specializing in power engineering, and those involved in postgraduate research.
