4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for Electrical Engineering students
This book is great for Electrical Engineering students. I hardly ever find myself wondering what the authors meant because of the very simple and clear writing style used in this text. I think a bit of colour in pictures and circuits would help visual learners such as myself but I'm not complaining. It's black and white start to finish but the method of explanation makes up for this one quirk. All in all, it's a great book and I think I'll be keeping this book forever as reference and not sell it like most of my other engineering textbooks.

Shipping to Canada was also very fast (3days).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I use this book to study fow a Power Electronics course. It is a good book and lightweight. 5 stars. Bought it directly from Amazon. Good shipping conditions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lousy Diagrams
I will work hard to sell this book soon.Understanding Power Electronics needs understanding of output waveforms of circuits.A sine-qua-non of waveform study is to be presented with diagrams that are clear and easy to understand. In this aspect this book is junk.'A picture is a thousand words' so the saying goes - I rest my case. What do you say about someone who draws a voltage and a current waveform in one diagram?Or several voltage and current waveforms in one diagram?Vs, supply voltage, Vd, diode drop, Vo output voltage, everything in one diagram and they overlap to say the least and also all in the same color - black.Sloppy and Lazy just about sums it up.These idiots think that such concepts are so simple that one need not sweat it to present them in a more clear fashion. It is evident that these people dont teach for a living - they do research and ask their TAs to do the teaching. One more caveat, dont buy the book written by that other fellow Dr. B.K.Bose.He too I am sure is stuffed to the gills with knowledge and wisdom a la Dr.Mohan here but his ability to present concepts in a simple manner with clear pictures and diagrams also is very suspect.Another $100+ went down the drain for me.My search for a good Power Electronics book goes on.If anyone knows of a good book please help. How much does it take to explain a simple rectifier and inverter circuits?Ye Gods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Great book with excellent questions and thorough analysis of basic analog power circuits and their uses.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good survey, but not exactly what I was looking for
This is a great survey of power electronics for someone with a modest electrical engineering background. It presents terminology, hardware, circuits and analysis in an approachable and well organized way. After reading it, someone with little prior experience can have a clear sense of what the field is about, what devices are available, and what technology is appropriate for specific power and voltage levels.

That said, as another reviewer pointed out, the book is a little light on math and detailed circuit topology.Erickson and Maksimovic was a much better fit for my needs. ... Read more

Product Description

This book is the first graduate-level textbook presenting a comprehensive treatment of Data Converters. It provides comprehensive definition of the parameters used to specify data converters, and covers all the architectures used in Nyquist-rate data converters. The book uses Simulink and Matlab extensively in examples and problem sets. This is a textbook that is also essential for engineering professionals as it was written in response to a shortage of organically organized material on the topic. The book assumes a solid background in analog and digital circuits as well as a working knowledge of simulation tools for circuit and behavioral analysis.

Product Description
Power Supply design is all about detail. And a large part of that detail lies in the practical domain, largely because of the typically small number of microseconds of switching periods involved, and the even smaller tens of nanoseconds of switch transition times --- all these, in effect accentuating various "second-order" effects, that eventually end up playing prime havoc with "normal" expectations of how the circuit should behave. So not unsurprisingly, even after reading several books, most readers still find themselves no closer to the ultimate goal of designing an actual power supply.

Sooner or later, all engineers start realizing the hard fact that designing a switching power supply isn't the trivial task it once seemed to be. But even after years of successfully mastering the underlying theory, the ultimate goal of creating a cost-effective, reliable and commercially viable power supply may still remain a distant dream, since success ultimately hinges on experience. That is, in fact, what clearly differentiates a senior and seasoned power supply engineer from the others --- the ability to navigate and surmount a veritable minefield of tricky issues that can only be learned the hard way, by actual hands-on experience on the job.

This book presents practical knowledge the author acquired rather painfully, while working "in the trenches" for several years in major engineering companies scattered across several continents. This is intended to be the mythical senior engineer's "bag of tricks," finally made available in the form of an easy-to-read book on your shelf. This book will make life for the ambitious power supply engineer much simpler --- besides reducing significantly, the rigorous requirement of having to be a senior engineer's protégé for years on end, just to gain a small measure of real success in this field.

* A practical presentation that answers the important question: why is my switching converter behaving so differently than what I was expecting on the basis of my paper design? And how do I bridge that huge gap?
* For the first time, a systematic and thorough discussion of troubleshooting switching power supplies.
* Coverage of AC/DC and DC/DC power supplies.
* Bench Evaluation of semiconductor ICs used in power conversion --- describing standard and unusual techniques mastered by the author, while testing similar chips at National Semiconductor.
* Detailed coverage of vital topics that haven't been covered by available sources --- grounding systems, the subtleties of component datasheets, and using instruments and probes effectively.
* Systematic investigation (type of failure mechanism, topology, etc.) and solutions for 5 years of reported power supply issues on a prominent, public web forum. This approach will ensure that engineers will not repeat the same mistakes.
* A unique, readable style: personal and direct; no mystification--- just the plain truth, easily and logically explained, with plenty of pictures, graphs and plots. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not too good
The topic is original, but is not extensive. Written in a very difficult English style, unappropiated for not English people like me.
The author has better books than this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect template for Troubleshooting
I have both of Sanjaya's other books, and was a reviewer on the second one. Both are excellent, so I had to read this one.I was amazed! He has exceeded my expectations. You built it; it sort of works; the efficiency is a little off, the ripple is a little high, now what?
This book covers everything from which transformer winding to put on first, whether the feedback resistor should be next to the IC or the load and why, etc.I would be willing to wager that anyone that has been designing switchers for 20 years will learn at least three new things. If you have never designed a switcher and never will, you should still get this book for the structured approach, the detailed info on resistor and capacitor manufacture and parasitics, high frequency pc board layout, etc.In some respects, better than the Pease or Williams books.I wish there was a "Troubleshooting Op Amp Circuits", "Troubleshooting FPGA Circuits", etc.Perhaps people in other electronic specialty areas will use this as a template and give us more books of this quality.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bus Converts
I think my husband will enjoy this book, although I was expecting more photographs of converted buses.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Information But...
Good information but poorly written, edited and published.Contains some technical errors.
Worthwhile as starting point.

4-0 out of 5 stars A true must have for bus nuts!
Anyone who is serious about converting a bus or is even interested should have this book in their library.
I expected a basic "how to" book that would skim over the important topics but that one would be 'Beginners Guide To Converted Coaches' by Larry Plachno which I also recommend for initial reading. When you really get more serious and want to learn about the different systems and what is involved then this book is a must and earns it's claim as a bible!
There are precious few books and useful articles on this hobby but the only reason that I didn't feel that this merited 5 stars was because some of the drawings, schematics and diagrams were a little small to really read and scrutinize. Maybe a few more pages in the book and larger diagrams next time?
Whether you are a complete novice or fairly adept, when you are getting serious about a conversion you really should start here and then move on to 'Bus Wiring for Bus Nuts' and 'Plumbing for Bus nuts' by the same author.
There are other books by Mr Galey as well but I have yet to read them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book for Sigma Delta ADC design
The right kind of book to get started on sigma delta ADC design. Couple of design examples in this book can be almost directly used to build a thermally limited 12-bit sigma delta.

The concepts of continuous time sigma delta, multilevel ADC, using the Schrier toolbox, switched capacitor noise analysis are well explained in this book. This book is a must for an analog/ADC designer working upon sigma delta ADC.

3-0 out of 5 stars grade B
This is certainly one of the best book written on delta-sigmas but a good book on the subject has yet to be written.
There is a chapter dedicated to design examples which is quite good. Multi-bit versus single bit, high order versus low order modulators gets good coverage. The weakness is the organisation of similar information dispersed in several chapters. The authors tried to avoid an overly mathematical style of writting but one wishes a little less hand waving. Many pages of text could have been replaced by simple and unequivocal mathematical derivations. I found the page layout is below average and exposition of ideas and concepts too superficial. This book would have been ok if it was reasonably priced given the average quality of its content but it is twice what it should be.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Univied, Consistent Approach
Much of the recent literature on digital signal processing has concentrated on the digital aspects of the task. The result is a surplus of books on the digital signal processing chips and programming techniques.

In the real world you have a signal and you need it digitized, or you have some digital data and you need a real life signal that you can send out somewhere. The real world refuses to become digital, its analog.

The literature on how to do this aspect has been sparse. And most of what does exist is in the form of a book by many authors. Their different writing style, different assumptions on the background of the readers and the inevitable disconnects between chapters make a consistent flow impossible.

In this book Dr. Temes, a professor at Oregon State brings a solid theoretical background to the writing. Dr. Schreier, a senior design engineer at Analog Devices brings an understanding of what is possible today. Both men have a wealth of experience in the subject and an ability to convey their experience and knowledge to the reader. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I picked up a copy of The Art of RAW Conversion, by Uwe Steinmueller
and Jürgen Gulbins because I wanted to learn about the benefits of
shooting RAW photography and how to setup a good post processing
workflow.I was not disappointed by this book in the slightest. The
authors have done an excellent job at giving a basic overview of why
you should shoot in RAW mode along with presenting a fairly generic
workflow for processing your images. They then go on to spend the
majority of the book discussing how to adapt that workflow to various
pieces of software such as Adobe Camera RAW, Apple's Aperture, Adobe
Lightroom, and several others.I found that the book did an adequate
job of comparing the advantages and disadvantages of the applications,
although there did seem to be a bit of favoritism towards Adobe Camera
RAW.They then close out the remainder of the book by looking at a
variety of topics such as advanced post-processing techniques, the
.DNG format, batch processing, and B&W conversions.

Overall, I felt that this book was at the perfect level for someone
who is looking to just step up from taking photos and posting them
online to actually perfecting your images in the post processing
stages.I think they do a great job of presenting you with the basic
approach and then showing different tools that can be used to
accomplish this. They also give a few tips throughout on how to
improve your composition skills as well.I would definitely recommend
this book to anyone that is looking to take this step.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for serious photographers.
This is one of the best nuts-and-bolts photography books I have ever read.If you are serious about your images, you NEED this book. Yes, it is due for a new edition in order to cover the latest CS and RAW converter s/w. I purchased this book a couple of years ago, BUT I am currently using CS5, and the vintage of this publication is almost NO drawback at all. This book will change the way you do photography forever!I am ordering everything this guy has ever written--he's that good.In a nutshell, he takes a topic that can be quite technical (and dry!), and explains it in a way that is not only clear and easy to follow, but entertaining and a JOY to read.Buy this book.Period.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, though slightly dated, survey of RAW converters
With the plethora of image processing and editing tools available to today's digital photographers, making optimal choices from among those offerings has become daunting. Here to shed some light on the issue and help with the decision-making is a book from which every advanced digital darkroom practitioner should benefit.

When digital imaging really began to reach the consciousness level of consumers in the late 1990s, file capture was most often in JPEG format. As the public enthusiasm for digital accelerated, serious photographers loudly debated quality issues, especially as related to film. Then along came RAW -- a digital capture mode using minimal in-camera processing with much more post-capture flexibility and strong potential for higher quality results.Early RAW files could only be converted using the camera manufacturer's proprietary software which often lacked convenience and elegance. Then Adobe popularized RAW with distribution of their Camera Raw Photoshop plug-in which through reverse engineering enabled one program to convert RAW files from many different brands of cameras. This proved very convenient to many who were already using Photoshop as their primary image editor and opened the door to unprecedented control of the digital image development process, including post-capture adjustment of white balance, exposure, and other variables.Numerous third-party RAW converters quickly followed, making informed choices tough without trying them all.

But when there's a need, someone usually rises to fill it...hence this book.Uwe Steinmueller has written a number of books (some co-authored with Juergen Gulbins) in both print and e-book format. What this edition does exceedingly well is describe in detail the concepts of digital capture, color management, and the benefits of shooting in RAW file format, and then it lays out the choices among RAW conversion programs currently available. The authors follow with additional info on perfecting images, batch processing, the DNG format, profiling, and creating black and white images.I know of no other printed volume that provides as comprehensive a survey of current RAW tools with cogent comments on qualitative capability and appropriate application.Furthermore, the clear, concise discussions of often highly technical subjects are really excellent, and the order and manner in which this rather complex collection of topics is presented is logical and understandable - really well done.

A couple of caveats. This is not a beginner's book. While those who wish to learn digital photography thoroughly will benefit a great deal from it, the sheer weight of technical information might stymie someone relatively new to digital imaging.Secondly, technology has moved so rapidly that this book is already dated. There have been significant changes in the industry since the date of publication that alter the choices in RAW converters.Hopefully an updated version of the book will arrive soon to bring issues to a more current status.Nevertheless, as a whole, this collection of information is an important resource for serious digital imagers and is highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXTREME RAW PHOTOGRAPHY!!
Are you an amateur or a professional photographer? If you are, then this book is for you. Authors Juergen Gulbins and Uwe Steinmueller, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that shows you how to achieve art-quality results with your digital camera.

Gulbins and Steinmueller, begin by preparing you for implementing a RAW conversion workflow. Then, the authors focus on the RAW conversion process and the software you'll use to implement it. Next, they present the key features of four more converters. They also cover Adobe's new integrated digital photography application, Lightroom. Finally, the authors focus on more specialized topics.

This most excellent book deals with the conversion of images shot using RAW format into images in a standardized image format, such as TIFF or JPEG. Perhaps more importantly, this book focuses mostly on the process of RAW conversion: what you should consider when shooting RAW, how to prepare files for conversion, and how to set up an efficient conversion workflow as part of your total image workflow.

Product Description
Static and Dynamic Performance Limitations for High Speed D/A Converters discusses the design and implementation of high speed current-steering CMOS digital-to-analog converters.
Starting from the definition of the basic specifications for a D/A converter, the elements determining the static and dynamic performance are identified. Different guidelines based on scientific derivations are suggested to optimize this performance. Furthermore, a new closed formula has been derived to account for the influence of the transistor mismatch on the achievable resolution of the current-steering D/A converter. To allow a thorough understanding of the dynamic behavior, a new factor has been introduced. Moreover, the frequency dependency of the output impedance introduces harmonic distortion components which can limit the maximum attainable spurious free dynamic range. Finally, the last part of the book gives an overview on different existing transistor mismatch models and the link with the static performance of the D/A converter. ... Read more

Product Description

Wide-bandwidth high dynamic range Digital to Analog Converters (D/A) are essential elements of modern systems, e.g. multi-carrier communication systems. Current Steering D/A converters offer the potential to achieve high dynamic range for wide frequency bandwidths, however, their performance at higher frequencies is usually limited by strong nonlinear behavior. This behavior is not well understood and impedes performance progress.

Wide-Bandwidth High Dynamic Range D/A Converters presents a structured description of the operation principles and the nonlinear behavior of Current Steering D/A Converters, and shows ways to deal with it in the design phase.

The book provides the reader a thorough understanding of error mechanisms at high frequencies. It explains their effects and shows their dependencies with parameters of the processed signal, the architecture, its circuit blocks and their implementations. A highlight of the book is the detailed treatment of timing errors caused by circuit imperfections due to process mismatch and clock interconnects.

The book follows a unique approach, building an analysis and synthesis framework of concepts with a generic scope beyond the current steering architecture.

The concepts are tested in practice with the design and measurements of a high performance 12b 500MSample/sec Current Steering Digital to Analog Converter realized in 0.18m m CMOS.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poorly organized. Avoid and find a better tool!
I cannot recommend this book to anyone involved in power supply design. I find that it is very poorly organized, and fails to explore many key topics in much depth. Life is too short to spend time wrestling with this type of reference. I would advise the interested reader to look for the power supply text written by Lenk or one of several other well-regarded texts.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just as a reference on your Bookshelf
It is a good reference book if you are involved of Power supplies.
I recomended it just for a book of reference, there is nothing practical on it an i agree with others reviews that the book is not organized at all.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please look for a better book on this subject
I hate to give a bad review but this book really is so bad that I had to get rid of it and warn others about it. I can not imagine what the author was thinking when he wrote it. It just does not cover the topic well at all and any useful information in it is so poorly organized and written that it is mostly just a useless lump of paper. I think I gave my copy away but I should have thrown it in the trash. I am sorry I spent any of my money on it.

1-0 out of 5 stars A useless book
Book just skims the topics mentioned in its title - just a disordered collection of a bit outdated drawings with childlike commentary. No word about power conversion essentials: topologies, magnetics, feedback, stability, EMI, power semiconductors.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's more like a reference book.
This book presents different circuit configurations and tries to explain what they do theoretically. Definitely not for beginners in electronics. It does not give you an introduction to many things you should know to be able to understand what is explained here. It is good as a reference book. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This book introduces an innovative, highly analytical approach to symbolic, closed-form solutions for switched-mode power converter circuits. This is a highly relevant topic to power electronics students and professionals who are involved in the design and analysis of electrical power converters. The author uses extensive equations to explain how solid-state switches convert electrical voltages from one level to another, so that electronic devices (e.g., audio speakers, CD players, DVD players, etc.) can use different voltages more effectively to perform their various functions. Most existing comparable books published as recently as 2002 do not discuss closed-loop operations, nor do they provide either DC closed-loop regulation equations or AC loop gain (stability) formulae. The author Wu, a leading engineer at Lockheed Martin, fills this gap and provides among the first descriptions of how error amplifiers are designed in conjunction with closed-loop bandwidth selection.

BENEFIT TO THE READER:
Readers will gain a mathematically rigorous introduction to numerous, closed-form solutions that are readily applicable to the design and development of various switch-mode power converters.

* Provides symbolic, closed-form solutions for DC and AC studies
* Provides techniques for expressing close-loop operation
* Gives readers the ability to perform closed-loop regulation and sensitivity studies
* Gives readers the ability to design error amplifiers with precision

Product Description
Technical problems often lead to differential equations with piecewise-smooth right-hand sides. Problems in mechanical engineering, for instance, violate the requirements of smoothness if they involve collisions, finite clearances, or stick–slip phenomena. Systems of this type can display a large variety of complicated bifurcation scenarios that still lack a detailed description. This book presents some of the fascinating new phenomena that one can observe in piecewise-smooth dynamical systems. The practical significance of these phenomena is demonstrated through a series of well-documented and realistic applications to switching power converters, relay systems, and different types of pulse-width modulated control systems. Other examples are derived from mechanical engineering, digital electronics, and economic business-cycle theory.

The topics considered in the book include abrupt transitions associated with modified period-doubling, saddle-node and Hopf bifurcations, the interplay between classical bifurcations and border-collision bifurcations, truncated bifurcation scenarios, period-tripling and -quadrupling bifurcations, multiple-choice bifurcations, new types of direct transitions to chaos, and torus destruction in nonsmooth systems.

In spite of its orientation towards engineering problems, the book addresses theoretical and numerical problems in sufficient detail to be of interest to nonlinear scientists in general. ... Read more
