1-0 out of 5 stars I have to disagree, it's a waste of money
I'm not sure about the glowing reviews here, but I fail to see how this book can be much help to current embedded designers? While the copyright is 2004, most of the book reads as if it was written in 1994 or even earlier. The book talks a lot about discrete logic, something that's rarely (or barely) used in modern embedded designs. Likewise, the author largely assumes external memory, which is also increasingly rare.

Most people, today, use SPI, I2C and/or CAN serial interfaces within (and even between) embedded devices and peripherals. The book doesn't provide useful coverage of any of these (or even mention some of them). It's as if the author's last real world embedded development work was with the 8051 a few decades ago? It's the only processor he goes into any detail on and not even the current System on a Chip versions.

The book does contain a useful primer to basic electronics and microcontroller theory. But like the rest of the book, much of it is out of date relatively to current embedded design and the same material is covered much better in other books.

The only reason to POSSIBLY buy this book, in my opinion, is the chapter on worst case timing and loading analysis. But even that section is showing its age. Signal levels, PC board design, bus/signal termination, impedance matching techniques, etc. are largely done differently today than what the author suggests. For example, do you know anyone using TTL discrete logic in their current embedded designs? Apparently both Ken Arnold and Newnes/Elsivier think someone does? You can have my copy back Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I've read on embedded systems
This is the best book that I came across treating embedded systems. Most other embedded systems books treat the subject from the point of view of one microcontroller. And they focus a lot on assembly programming. You won't find that in this book. There are only a few pages discussing the 8051. The focus of this book is on the hardware design of microcontrollers and how to interface to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST book in microcontroller system design!!
Most of others microcontroller or microprocessor books I've read only touch a little on the hardware system design, more often just using ideal models. For instance, most books explain how to construct address decoder using 74138, and thats it. That is sufficient if you are only doing computer simulation. However, when you want to design the real thing, fresh engineers would probably wonder, 74LS138, 74HC138 or 74ACT138 to be used? What are the uses of capacitance value, voltage range, timing diagram etc on datasheet? You will find the answers in this book.

The author use detailed and real example in explaning timing, loading, voltage range, logic families etc. This is the book for fresh graduate who doesnt know where to start, and also for engineers who want to build a realiable circuit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great buy!
Great book for beginners and for experts. Really easy/enjoyable to read.

I think the greatest thing about this book is that it describes quite well how one should interpret eletrical specs of devices. The examples are quite practical and use real spec numbers. A must.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great intro book to embedded hardware
This was one of the best technical books I have read in years.Embedded Controller Hardware Design provides an excellent introduction to the world of embedded controller design. The author has a writing style that is very readable and he uses sufficient examples to illustrate to the reader how to apply what they have just read .

The book primarily deals with the hardware design aspect of controller design, and focuses on the 8051 microcontroller and its variants. Most of the book is spent developing a systematic method of making sure a design will work reliably, even under the unfavorable conditions of a "worst-case" scenario. The book would probably be most useful to electrical engineers, electronics technicians, and serious hobbyist who are just getting started in embedded systems and need some good background material. It could also be useful to programmers who are migrating from the desktop/PC environment to the embedded controller environment and want some information on the structure of embedded hardware. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A good place to start for independant study of PLC controls.
This book took me from a 20 year maintenance background, with only minimal exposure to automation controls, to a solid basic understanding of the concepts, and applications of this field. In places it was a bit toughreading, but all the information seemed to be there for the reader, andnone of it went completely over my head. Someone who hasn't been exposed tovarious industrial processes may have a tough time with some of theapplication examples, but I have been fortunate to see many differentproccesses in my field of work. (crane repair)I ecspecially liked theintroduction to computer oriented number sytems (binary, octal, hexadecimal)and was able to commit these to memory with little effort. I havn'tselected a follow up of this beginners text yet, so I cant tell you how itwill dovetail into my continuing education, but it has given me the abilityto read manufacturers specifications, and make intelligent decisions ontheoretical applications. I suspect that the knowledge I've gained fromthis publication will serve me for quite some time, and will likely be usedfor refference on occasion. ... Read more

Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A188333. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis documents the design of the hardware and embedded software of a digital computer that provides autonomous control of the PANSAT spacecraft. The system was designed for use during a two year mission in a low earth orbit. The computer uses an Intel M80C186XL running at 7.3728 MHz, 512 kbytes of error-detection and correction RAM, 64 kbytes of ROM, and standard CMOS components to provide a general purpose microcomputer. The purpose of the computer is to control all subsystems of the spacecraft, perform analog-to- digital conversions, orchestrate duplicate hardware components to provide redundancy, and upload new software from a ground station. The hardware system was built on printed circuit boards which were manufactured by the Space System Academic Group and tested for proper operation. The embedded software was coded using 80186 Assembler and the C programming language, tested for proper operation, and placed into ROM as firmware. ... Read more

Product Description
Software and Hardware Engineering: Motorola M68HC12 is the second in a series of processor-specific texts designed to stand alone or to accompany Cady's previous book, Microcontrollers and Microcomputers: Principles of Software and Hardware Engineering (OUP 98). This two-text concept provides well-written text coverage of the general principles of software and hardware design. This accompanying processor-specific volume allows professors to choose a particular microcontroller for their course/lab work. The previous text focused specifically on the Motorola M688HC11. This text provides an introduction to the architecture and design of software and hardware for the Mortorola M68HC12. Specifically, it covers the hardware features of two versions of the M68HC12 -- the M68HC12A4 and the M68HC912B32. In addition to covering and comparing features common with its M68HC11 predecessor, this text features chapter on fuzzy logic and how to program a fuzzy inference engine. A detailed appendix explains the design of software for a debugging pod. There are more than 100 extensive programming examples. This text will provide the beginning student with specific material and examples to apply the Motorola M68HC12 microcontroller in real-world applications. It is written so that a student or engineer familiar with the Motorla M68HC11 will be easily assimilate the differences between it and the M68HC12. It is suitable for undergraduate students in electrical engineering or technology programs in electrical and computer technology.

This text can be used with its companion volume, Microcontrollers and Microcomputers: Principles of Software and Hardware Engineering, or with any other book that examines the general principles of microcomputer technology. It can stand by itself in a course devoted to the M68HC12. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not much more than the Documentaion Rehashed.
You can get this book used for 3.00, because that is about what it is worth.

While the authors seem to understand hardware, I seriously question that there is much in software of value here.

You will pay a lot more for:
"The HCS12/9S12: An Introduction to Hardware and Software Interfacing"
But it is worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Foundation for Programmble Hardware
This book is used for the classic junior level microprocessor class at Montana State University - Bozeman (where Cady teaches) and is the starting point for modern digital design. After an "Intro to Logic Circuits" class this book then gives the essential foundation to build upon with more advanced design classes. The microcontroller book (also by Cady) comes after this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended - Very Valuable
This book, and potential customers, have been done a great disservice if they've been misled by previous customer reviews. While not for beginners, that fact does not take away from the value of this book to others. And it is far more than just data sheets. Anyone who's tried to learn a new microprocessor strictly from data sheets will certainly recognize the value of this book. It does not replace the data sheets; it supplements them. It straddles well the region between primers and reference material.

The intended audience for this book is college Engineering students, or people already familiar with microprocessors. A highly motivated beginner could use this book as well, but they would probably need access to someone with experience to answer questions when they get stuck. (For a more beginner's book see Fredrick Cady's "Microcontrollers and Microcomputers - Principles of Software and Hardware Engineering".) Familiarity with the HC11 could be helpful, but it's not required. I have never worked with the HC11, and I found that of little consequence.

The HC12 is an amazing microcontroller. But gleaning and understanding the necessary material from the 400 pages of Motorola data sheets isn't easy. The authors, one of whom helped design the HC12, have already done that for you. Several very useful, but complex peripherals have been integrated into this line of microcontrollers, in addition to tons of parallel I/O. But what initially attracted me to this chip were the native Fuzzy Logic instructions. The authors do an excellent job of detailing an "example" Fuzzy Logic application, and the basics of Fuzzy Logic. It's worth the read for no other reason than that.

Modern microprocessors and microcontrollers have become very complex. Learning a new one without the help of a colleague, strictly from the data sheets is a monumental task. This book can fill that gap well. My one criticism is its age. Published only in 2000, it is already out of date regarding some of the newer versions of the HC12. The A4 and B32 are covered in this book, and while the B32 is still a workhorse suitable for many applications, some of the newer chips include many additional features and peripherals. A new edition that dealt with those would be useful.

If you're interested in learning the HC12 and/or Fuzzy Logic, I highly recommend this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is terrible
This book is in no way for beginners. This book talks about Assembly language for the HC 12 without detailed explanation of the code. If you do not understand assembly language you are lost with this book. However the book is a good reference once you understand the basics. A good book for beginners with some level of C programing knowledge is Embedded Microcontrollers by Tood Morton. it explains the assembly code in comparison to C/C++ code.

It's a kind of a copy of M68HC12 data sheets. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great overview of a complicated, newtechnology!
I found this book to be very useful in understanding this new technology.I was able to gain insight into what softlogic is all about and how to approach solving my own application problems. There are many manufacturersof softlogic products out there and each has its own hardware and softwareto learn and to implement.Mr. Carrow's book gave me the guidance toeventually select a softlogic supplier.I have a degree in electricalengineering and would recommend the book to anyone looking for a referenceand intro to softlogic. From here you should be able to configure aworking system with any softlogic manufacturer's specific hardware (withtheir guidance, manuals, and support).Every softlogic application isunique and no one book can address all the details of this technology.

2-0 out of 5 stars If only the book realized the publisher's review.
The "Introduction to Fuzzy Logic" touted on the book's cover and in the publisher's review comprises 3 paragraphs of general information. This seems to be the theme of the book - general information with noin-depth content. I wouldn't recommend this book to a degreed engineer.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good but not real technical
The reason that I give this book a rating of only 4 is because it really doesn't focus on its title. It is a good book for some general information about the control industry but it does not go into depth about anything.Do not buy it in expectation of using it for a reference to implement a PC for control. It tells little about the practical way of doing this.Anyone with any current expereince should avoid this book. However it would be OK for a beginner. Also, since I am an electrical engineer my advice to other degreed engineers is to look for something else ... Product Description
Automation is the use of control systems (such as numericalcontrol, programmable logic control, and other industrialcontrol systems), in concert with other applications ofinformation technology (such as computer-aided technologies[CAD, CAM, CAx]), to control industrial machinery andprocesses, reducing the need for human intervention. In thescope of industrialization, automation is a step beyondmechanization. Whereas mechanization provided humanoperators with machinery to assist them with the muscularrequirements of work, automation greatly reduces the needfor human sensory and mental requirements as well. Processesand systems can also be automated.Automation plays anincreasingly important role in the global economy and indaily experience. Engineers strive to combine automateddevices with mathematical and organizational tools to createcomplex systems for a rapidly expanding range ofapplications and human activities. Many roles for humans inindustrial processes presently lie beyond the scope ofautomation. Human-level pattern recognition, languagerecognition, and language production ability are well beyondthe capabilities of modern mechanical and computer systems. ... Read more
