1-0 out of 5 stars Developing C# Windows Software
This product is no longer support by Apress who baught over the rights from Wrox and you are not able to get the source code to do the exercises from Apress or wrox.

It was a major mistake buying this book since my money was wasted on a book I cannot use. Please contact me at 281-239-8739. It is rated poorly because the service is no longer offered for a product that's being sold. Very unfair and cheating to the customer who relies on these services after purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference Manual for C# Application Programmers
This book is a good reference for those who need to build and deploy traditional Windows Application under .Net and C#.The authors do a good job of covering aspects of Windows Form programming, including showing you how to design and implement some advanced features that you won't find in any online documentation for C# or .Net.The authors even walk you through several sample applications to show you "hands on" programing with the controls.

Unfortunately, they don't cover all of the Windows Forms controls, and leave out a few of the basics. However, the ones they have left out seem to be the more basic controls that don't require a lot of advanced explanation.

Overall, this book is good material for your bookshelf for those times when you need to verify, or learn, how a control works. They focus on the Visual Studio environment of C#, so there are a few differences that non-VS people will need to make in other to use this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Belongs On My Bookshelf
This book is a good complement to Eric Brown's "Windows Forms Programming with C#".The authors here cover items that Brown didn't or didn't cover as thoroughly.Since their style is different, in some cases, the added depth they provide enhanced my understanding of what was going on.They stayed focussed and covered a lot of ground in a short book. The sections on the Registry, adding Help, and Deployment were helpful as well.I only regret they didn't touch on Drag and Drop for completeness, although that is available elsewhere.Good, useful tutorial book with reference potential.Definitely belongs on my bookshelf, I'll just ahve to make more room. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A little out of date . . .
But if you are coming in to networking not knowing anyhting, it can help.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS TUTORIAL REALLY DELIVERS
After reading this tutorial, you will learn every thing you need to know about the basics of networking. Author Steve Steinke has done an excellent job of helping you to explore proper punch-down procedures; understand the different types of cabling used in networks; learn how to configure Windows for a network; discover LANs, MANs, and WANs; identify the various types of networks; explore network cabling; discover typologies used in networking; examine types of network operating systems; discover network protocols and how they "talk" to each other; define ethernet and explore how it uses a system known as CSMA/CD; identify seven layers of communication within a network; and, examine smart modems, IDSNs, DSLs, and cable modems; discover bridges, routers, and switches. In addition, the author will lead you through hands-on activities such as: setting up a peer-to-peer network; building a CAT5 cable; and testing a CAT5 cable with a cable tester.

For example, the author begins by with a thorough discussion of network protocols. Next, he goes on to explain the physical layer protocol by touching on encoding, modulation and the physical layer. Then, the author covers data-link protocols by looking at all of the topologies in detail. Next, the author discusses network and transport layer protocols which includes the TCP/IP protocol suite. Then, Steinke examines application layer protocols and how ISPs provide Internet and WWW services. Next, Steinke covers all types of network hardware like cabling fiber optics and wireless LANs. This is followed by a general discussion of network software. Then, the author explains the concept of internetworking. Network and Systems management are covered next. Finally, Steinke concludes with an outstanding detailed examination of network security and backup systems.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I thought
The book covers a LOT of topics but it assumes too much.Even on Chapter 1 the author discusses topics that I didnt know about.Name of the book is "Network Tutorial"; bad name.I would call it Networks Unleashed. It also seems a bit outdated to me, the latest edition was released in Jan/2003, yet there is too much talk about Windows 3.1, OS/2 and NT.Linux and XP are rarely mentioned.I dont recommend it, its good but not worth the price tag.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "user friendly" introduction and reference
Now in an updated and expanded fifth edition, Network Tutorial: A Complete Introduction To Networks by Steven Steinke (with the assistance of the editors of "Network Magazine") is a "user friendly" introduction and reference to network technology, written especially for managers and executives seeking to update their knowledge on the latest challenges of evolving network infrastructures. Individual chapters cogently address such topics as physical layer protocols, data-link protocols, network hardware and software, security and backup systems, and much, much more in this involved and extensive resource filled with diagrams and extensive description.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Guide!
Excellent for newcomers or if u want to get up to date in networking technologies. Is a good comprehensive guide that Starts with the basic precepts of networks, the book explores protocols, hardware and software components, and the unique jargon of networking. Concepts are explained clearly and simply, without assuming an extensive understanding of network internals. The glossary provides a quick reference for unfamiliar terms. Among the many topics new to this fourth edition are: wireless networks, cable modem systems, virtual private networks, IP security, asset management, and XML. Other key subjects include improving network performance, anytime/anywhere access, and interoperability. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete book
I just graduated from college and I am getting ready to start my new job as an analyst/programmer.I bought this book to help review and remember different techniques for visual basic.net.This book as some good examples, however, this book lacks the complete code to make different examples work. There are subroutines missing from examples as early as Chapter 1.This could be a valuable book if all the code was included.

1-0 out of 5 stars Plagado de errores, los ejemplos no compilan.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good examples, but many errors
First of all, this book is not a reference. It is a book of samples and tutorials. It won't give you details about commands, objects or the nitty-gritty of why things work.It gives you examples of how to do things and only a very general discussion on how it works. It's up to you to learn the details from other sources. So you are best to purchase this with another more detailed reference that will give you the real low-down on ADO.NET.

Second and most troubling is that this book seems to be filled with errors. Some of their examples don't work. After following the steps in the book to the letter, your program won't run and you have to take time (sometimes minutes, sometimes hours) digging through other sources to figure out what this book didn't tell you so you can get things working.

This book answers many questions, but not all.Use it in conjunction with other materials.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
This book covers the material well, especially for those who are familiar with VB.NET and SQL Server as the book is "for the serious developer."There's very little of the book wasted on background material.Rather than getting bogged down in a lot of theoretical discussion, Barker dives right into examples, making the technical points as he illustrates the examples.

The material in the book flows well from a simple bound list example all the way to some complex Windows and Web examples.Throughout the book, the standard Northwind database is used.Essentially all of the code uses the generic OleDB approach so the code would work with either SQL Server or Access; Barker points out the few differences between using the two approaches.

The general approach in the book follows a format of stating a business problem, a Technique section where the approach is discussed, then a series of numbered Steps, a How It Works section that completes any necessary fine points and finally a Comments section for additional information.Scattered throughout are small Note and Tip sections with pencil & light bulb icons - many are real gems, not to be missed.

A great deal of ground is covered in its 500 pages - essentially all the information one would need to build a respectable Windows or Web based application. If you're looking for information to build a robust n-tier application, there are other books which explain how to split the code between the tiers, this book gives a good foundation for that.

I noticed only a few inconsequential typos. The book was a pleasure to go through and presents a broad and reasonably deep coverage of the subject material.

5-0 out of 5 stars With numerous code examples

1-0 out of 5 stars Why would you be buying this now?
This was an ok tutorial for this product when this product was new now you should be buying what ever the newest version is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tutorial Book
I just started using ProE at work and this book was very helpful in teaching me the fundamentals of Pro-E 2000i2.The click by click examples are easy to follow. The book shows you the most common commands that you'll use when you start designing your first parts.I recommend you practice some of the projects in this book before you take the week long "Fundamentals of Pro Engineer" course offered by PTC.The fast paced course can become very frustrating if you are completely new to ProE.This book also has very few text errors. The book's CD demonstrations are also helpful.Overall, I am very satisfied with my first ProE book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buy something else
Maybe as an indroduction this book and its advanced brother would be useful as a free website recsource. However, when you consider the price they are not to impressive.... keep your money for a referance book (with an index) such as "Pro/Engineer Tips and Techniques", "Advanced Tips, Techniques and Work-arounds" or probably any other title.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish this book had been out when we chose textbooks.
I was a TA teaching ProENGINEER with a different book, and looked at several others when considering changing books.(We were not happy with the one we had, which was the first one available for 20, so we didn't have much choice at the time.)This is the book I recommended that the course change to - I felt it was well organized and thought out, and would be a good reference after the course was over.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money...
This book was really meant as a textbook for Toogood's class in CAD, given at the University of Alberta. As such, it is really apparent that he took his hand-written overheads and just typed them out in book format; that is, this book is not much help to those with real questions about Pro/E.

The lessons will be familiar to anyone who has taken the three-day course from either PTC or Rand - your binders have a lot more information than this book! The book is made even worse by the fact that there is no index; in this day of simply clicking the mouse to create an index this oversight is not forgiveable.

Toogood does not give any details on many of the more fundamental issues associated with Pro/E such as ensuring that the config.pro file is set correctly. There is also very little information on working on anything more complicated than basic models since the sections on drawings and assemblies are very weak.

The cd that comes with the book is not very good either; that is, if you can even view it.It should be in some other software and/or format since both of my computers come back with errors about "low system resources" when I try to run the program. In the end I had to find a rather old pc in order to run the disk.If you are the type of person who learns from listening to a disembodied voice drone on while an animated mouse points and clicks through Pro/E's many menus then this is the cd for you!

For the rest of us, I'd suggest spending your money on the PTC manuals or else taking one of the official courses.Considering the price of this book you are not getting your money's worth! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference
I keep coming back to this title where other texts like Foley and Van Dam and Angel come short. All the basic hidden surface and shading techniques from which today's architectures are derived are described in detail.Modeling techniques are left out.My only wish was that there was a more recent collection including current hardware accelerators, plus some modeling techniques like subdivision surfaces and DirectX 8's patches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent!

1-0 out of 5 stars The only book there is?
Image generation -- especially real time image generation -- is a VERY difficult subject to present.. or to understand. In the present case the book does not sufficiently cover the priciplesof perception -- how humansperceive the outside world and thus how visual information must bepresented to maximize its impact. Certainly, the importance of flicker, peripheral vision, contrast and the acuity of the human eye are essentialto presentation of image generation theory and practice.

The importanceof polygon rates and pixel fill rates were not presented adequately.Inaddition, transport delay and its destruction of valid training benefitswas not adequately covered. The fact that image generators have internalprocesses which can vary in processing time from frame to frame was notadequately covered.

The various methods of handling levels of detail andtheir impact on frame rates and transport delay were not covered.

Moredata on the impact of Phong shading or Gouraud shading on frame rates wasneeded.

A better discussion of nearest neighbor, MIP MAP, bilinear MIPMAP, triliniear MIP MAP and Anisotropic texture was needed.

As fordisplay systems, collimated displays -- glass and MYLAR -- and especiallyCalligraphic displays are all essential to understanding real time imagegeneration and its display systems. ... Read more
